Peak Pioneer ~ September 28, 2015

Peak students Will and Arel hiked the length of the Ten Mile range on Saturday, summiting all ten peaks in 12 hours. Their trek was about 14 miles and included 9,000 feet of total elevation gain. Congratulations, guys!

A letter from Head of School:

Dear Parents:
As you know, a big step forward this year was the creation of more defined Middle and Upper Schools at Peak. Divisions I & II have their Base Camps and most of their classes on the ground level; Division III students spend most of their time upstairs. This year, too, we have separate Forums for Middle and Upper School students.

We want to make sure, however, that there are regularly scheduled opportunities for the whole school to come together as a community. One way we will do this is through all-school meetings that will replace the two Forums one Tuesday afternoon each month.

On a more frequent basis will be weekly Community Lunches that will take place every Wednesday. This will be an opportunity for all students to enjoy each other’s company and conversation in the Community Room, and play together in the lot beside the school. Community Lunch will coincide with our take-in hot lunch program, which will start this week – on Wednesday, Sept. 30.

So far, Peppino’s is the only provider in town that can offer lunches at the reasonable rates that we had last year. Each Wednesday, starting this week, will be “pizza or salad day” from Peppino’s.  Students will be directed to sign up for pizza or salad at the Welcome Office, starting tomorrow.

If families wish more than the weekly pizza or salad, Peppino’s can provide hot and cold sandwiches and salads on another day or two each week. Please email Adam (adam.brenner@thepeakschool.org) if you want sandwich/salad choices for your student on other days of the week.

We would also like to select one Wednesday each month to celebrate Community Lunch by having a school-wide potluck lunch based on a particular holiday or event that we will organize. Parents, we’ll be asking you to contribute to these potluck lunches.

And as long as I’m writing about food, please remember to mark your calendars for our Fall Harvest Gathering food and beer/wine/spirits tasting on Saturday, October 10 from 6:30 – 9:00 at the Summit County Senior Center. Invite your friends to join us for this terrific event to benefit Peak!

All the best,

Ps. If you haven't signed up for a parent/teacher conference, please do that now by clicking here!

Special Notice for Division III Parents!!

Sunday, October 4 is the Colorado Western Slope College Fair at Aspen H.S., from 11:00 – 2:00. More than 200 colleges and universities from across the country will be represented. More importantly, the list of participating colleges includes MANY institutions that our students should know about.

I strongly urge all students in our college-prep cohort to attend this event. And I also recommend that our Division III students in 9th and 10th grade also attend. This is an opportunity to meet face to face with admissions officers, hear about the programs they offer, and make an initial impression on them.

There will also be workshops for students and parents on topics including financial aid, scholarships, student athletes, arts schools, small colleges, and more.

Please visit the following website: http://www.cwscollegefair.org

If your student would like to attend, please send me an email this week (steven.coleman@thepeakschool.org) and I will arrange car pool transportation to Aspen.

(Note: The national college fair in Denver is the following Sunday – October 11. Of the two, I think the Aspen fair would be a far better experience, because of the colleges/universities attending, and the more manageable size of the event.)
