When making art makes you better at business

What's on our minds in September...

Artsy Smartsy

Happy fall, friends! This coming October is National Arts & Humanities Month, and to celebrate, we’re bringing you all the ways that art is good for you—not just personally, but professionally.

We’re not just talking art appreciation here. Studies show that making your own art is better for your brain than simply understanding it. Our latest blog post explores four artistic disciplines with incredible cognitive (and career) benefits
  • Drawing and painting
  • Improv theater
  • Music
  • Creative writing
Want to get started? Our guide also tells you where to take art classes and workshops here in the city.

Made in NY Fellowships

Are you a media or tech company that is “Made in NY”? The MINY Media Center is offering 10 one-year fellowships to innovators in animation, filmmaking, gaming, multi-disciplinary digital projects, post-production, and virtual reality. MINY Fellows receive a one-year Incubator Membership and industry mentors. To qualify, applicants must be NYC residents and have their teams and companies based in the city. Applications due by Sept. 30.

Indiewalls

Crowdsourced art curation

Looking for the right art for your workspace? Indiewalls, a platform for “crowdsourced art curating,” connects buyers to artists to find the perfect pieces for their projects. Buyers list the medium and type of art they want, artists pitch works that fit the vision, buyers shortlist the pieces they want. Think of it as the love child between Artspace and Pinterest.

Walk the walk, talk the art

Combine art and still-warm weather and you get Street Art Walk, a two-hour tour of Bushwick and Williamsburg’s most famous murals, stencils, stickers, and paste ups. Learn about world-famous street artists along the way. Tours run midday on Saturday and Sunday for $25 per person.

Adding it all up...

"If you hear a voice within you say 'you cannot paint,' then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced."
            —Vincent Van Gogh

You don’t have to be an artist to make art. Harness that spark of creativity inside you and make something—no rules, no end goals, just creation for the sake of learning, passion and enjoyment.
