b. What is the rate of the height and width the landfill is growing? The landfill is permitted to accept up to 1500 tons per day. The material is received inspected and placed in two foot lifts to achieve maximum compaction. The height and width are controlled by permit and inspected on a regular basis. The landfill on it south west corner is currently at its final height.
c. Does the wind blowing impact trash movement on the hill? Absolutely, it would be preferred that the wind did not blow when dumping truck however that cannot be controlled. The team makes every effort to minimize the effect of the wind. From time to time however the wind will blow some litter which is collected and disposed of by a litter picker.
d. What is the regular maintenance of the trucks (hydraulics, cleaning, etc.)? There is a big issue with the trash trucks leaving stains on the neighborhood streets. Our entire fleet is under a preventive maintenance program. Daily each vehicle is checked by the driver at the beginning and end of each shift. Any issue is documented and turned over to maintenance for the necessary repairs.
e. The amount of trash present seems like trash cannot be processed in a timely manner. What is the schedule for the landfill in terms of dumping and processing? The landfill operates 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays. CFS is allowed to dump and remain on sites as necessary outside of those operating hours as needed.
f. Are there any contracts where CFS is bringing trash in to Petersburg from outside of city limits? Or out of state? CFS does hold contracts throughout the Greater Richmond area to include the Tri Cities as well as some out of state.
g. How is the smell of the landfill being maintained? Landfill odors are controlled by using best practices for cover and neutralizers. From time to time we will receive a load that smell worse than normal. The crew will do it very best to place and cover that material as quickly as possible.
h. Please address the crime and gun control in the city.
Most importantly, the City of Petersburg is a safe place to live and we support the men and women our Police Department for their hard work, commitment to serve and what they do each day to keep all of us safe. Our men and women in blue are doing an exceptional job, and they cannot do their jobs alone. Addressing community violence is complex and it will take the entire community to protect our neighborhoods, homes and families.
In the recent weeks, we have been very concerned about the crime in our neighborhoods. We are working closely with city departments to address the crime and increasing our efforts to enhance partnerships within the community. Keeping our city safe is our number one priority, and the city will continue to work collaboratively to make an impact against crime.
We encourage all of our residents to attend the upcoming Petersburg Police Community cookout in Lieutenant’s Run, a ward meeting and most importantly, call the Petersburg Police Department to report any suspicious activity in your neighborhood at (804) 732-4442. It will take all of us as a team to fight against crime. We stand firm that this violence is not who we are as a city.
