Polyteknik AS: Newsletter September 2015
View this email in your browser

Welcome!

It has been a busy summer for Polyteknik AS with interesting projects in both Europe and the rest of the world. In this edition, we have selected a few in order to show not only the diversity of our activities but also to which extent Polyteknik AS today works on a global scale.

You will find a short presentation of the installation of one of our more refined PVD systems, the Cryofox Cluster UHV6, at the Technical University of Delft in Holland. Information about the fascinating assignment that requires a Polyteknik AS team workin on site in Chile. And news from POLYCSP ApS presenting strong results on solar absorber tubes

The international dimension is also noticeable at our Subcon division, where we have seen an increase in the number of requests for demanding functional coatings from a majority of international clients.

And much more, which we hope you will enjoy reading.

Best regards,

Rikke Larsen
Assistant Manager
MEET US AT SEMICON EUROPA 2015 – Booth 1539

Polyteknik AS will once again participate as exhibitor at the leading trade fair for the semiconductor industry in Europe, the Semicon Europa 2015. This year we will present a NEW sputtering system concept, which we have named Cryofox Infinity VB. The Infinity VB system is a high throughput system for vertical double sided sputtering of high quality thin films. Substrates, up to 700mm high, are placed in a vertical fixture and moves horizontally from the load lock to the sputtering process chamber. The system is a modular concept, where additional process chambers or magazines can follow in a linear flow.
The Cryofox Infinity VB system is designed for industrial use with emphasis on a fully automatic process control of regular or reactive sputtering processes, high throughput and a focus on minimum and easy maintenance.
Adding the new Cryofox Infinity VB to our portfolio, Polyteknik AS now covers an even wider range of thin film deposition systems ranging from small R&D systems to volume production and even roll-to-roll – together with a vast variety of deposition processes like magnetron sputtering, e-beam, PECVD as well as thermal and organic evaporation.

We look forward to seeing you in Dresden the 6th - 8th of October.

High-tech order from the Paranal site in Chile
During the coming months, a team from Polyteknik AS will be travelling regularly to the Paranal site of the European Southern Observatory (ESO), which is the foremost intergovernmental astronomy organisation in Europe and the world's most productive astronomical observatory.
Placed on a mountain top in the middle of the Attacama Desert - one of the driest places on earth with around 350 days of clear skies – makes it the perfect site designed by nature for astronomical observations.

The project consists of a major overhaul and upgrade of the large coating system used to deposit the mirror coating on the four 8.2m diameter Very Large Telescopes (VLT). Together with the four movable 1.8m diameter Auxiliary Telescopes, the VLT array is the world’s most advanced optical instrument.
The order includes an in-house production at our 2000 m2 facilities in Oestervraa, followed by the installation and testing on site at the facility in Chile of sophisticated control systems, vacuum systems, and key components to the large sputtering system - all of which are part of the core competencies of Polyteknik AS.
First component to be installed is a new cooling water management and distribution system, which is designed and manufactured at Polyteknik AS. The unit has a cooling capacity of more than 200 kW, which is needed for the 122 m3 large sputtering system with among others a 4 m magnetron and 8 cryopumps with a total pumping capacity of 24.000 l/s.

Even though we have already been working on an international level for many years, we consider the placing of this very important order by ESO as a confirmation of our image as being a well-established, technology-focused company with outstanding performance and recognition on an international level.

Cryofox Cluster UHV 6 installed at TU Delft
We are pleased to have finalised the installation of a Cryofox Cluster UHV at the Technical University of Delft, where it will be used for state-of-the-art research on transparent conductive oxides (TCOs), especially ITO and hydrogenated indium oxide.
The fully automatic cluster system is equipped with two RF sputtering chambers which with adjustable magnetrons reaches uniformities below +/-2% of the deposited layers on 100x100 mm substrates. The unique design of the process chambers with large diagonal flanges ensures easy access for service and target change, yet due to solid mechanical construction and a double o-ring sealing a base pressure in the low end of 10-8 mbar range is reached.
Because of the automation and the loadlock cassette, a sequence of 6 substrates can be processed without supervision of an operator, which in combination with datalogging of all relevant process parameters results in high throughput and high quality research results.
Requests for demanding functional coatings
At the SubCon division of Polyteknik AS, we receive an increasing number of requests for demanding functional coatings. In some cases standard materials are used for the deposition, in other cases the materials used are more unusual such as for instance niobium, carbon, wolfram, molybdenum, various nitrides, and oxide layers as these materials have certain unique qualities which enhance the requested functionalities.

But what applies to both cases and makes the demanding functional coatings very distinct from usual standard coatings, is that they provide a unique functionality for each application as e.g. corrosion resistance, diffusion barrier, high quality, high uniformity, small tolerances of layer thickness, high quality of adhesion to substrate, or high reflective.
The typical areas from which we receive demands for functional coatings are:

  • Thin films for energy storage
  • Electrodes for TEM (Thermal Electric Modules)
  • Fusion energy related coatings
  • Very high reflective coatings
  • Thin films for solar applications
  • Dielectric films
  • Thin film electrodes with high demand for functionality
  • Conversion layers – surface preparation for further coating or plating
Our well-equipped in-house laboratory enables us to perform a large variety of material analysis and characterization in order to verify that the results of the coating processes completed fully meet the requirements of our customers.

POLYCSP ApS – a Polyteknik AS spin-off company
The company POLYCSP ApS was established in 2013 as a direct result of a dedicated research effort made by DTU and Aalborg University together with Polyteknik AS in the framework of an HTF funded project on absorber tubes used in Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) facilities. The aim was to develop the best performing absorber tube with outstanding anticorrosion properties and thus no need for vacuum; and we have succeeded!

The POLYCSP absorber tubes are currently being tested at sites in India, Germany and Denmark (Aarhus) and additional testing is scheduled. And given that the first results confirm the exceptional anticorrosion properties and show an absorber efficiency of >93% and an emission of <12%, POLYCSP ApS has reached a goal with a very promising business potential indeed.

Hans-Erik Kiil, who has recently joined POLYCSP as CTO, will be in charge of the further development and strengthening of the business potential. His many years as R&D Director and extensive experience from working with development of new technologies and new products in different business units within the Danfoss Group is a highly valued asset, that will be put to good use in this rapidly expanding business venture.
