NC/SC Reformation Collaborative Worship

This Sunday

As church communities around the world look toward the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, we would like to invite and encourage you to participate in a collaborative worship service to kick-off the countdown to Reformation 2017. We will gather together - the North and South Carolina Synods - at Christ Lutheran Church in Charlotte (4519 Providence Rd.) on Sunday, September 20, at 4:00 p.m. for worship and Eucharist. Bishop Tim Smith of the North Carolina Synod will preside, and Bishop Herman Yoos of the South Carolina Synod will preach. A reception will follow the worship service. Clergy in both synods are invited to process; the color for the day will be green.

Kindergarten-2nd grade youth group:

This Sunday

We will gather on Sunday, Sept 20th from 12:15 pm-2:00 pm for a bring your own picnic and fellowship time together!  Everyone is asked to bring one of their favorite foods and something special to them to share with the group!
All  members of Living Springs and Spring Valley Presbyterian Church are invited to the First Annual Fishing Fellowship Day to be held on October 3, 2015 at Sesquicentennial State Park on Two Notch Rd. from 8 am to 11 am.  Members are invited to learn how to tie fishing knots, rig baits, and cast a fishing rod & reel and are invited to fish together in the lake at the state park.  Fellowship over cookies and lemonade will also occur.  This is a great opportunity for parents to fish with their children and potentially learn a new skill, while enjoying the company of others and a morning out in nature.  Contact Lori Masad, 507-350-8291, ljmasad@gmail.com.

Animal Blessing Service

Sunday, October 4

At 4:30 pm, we will have our annual animal blessing on the front lawn. Bring your fish, hamsters, dogs, cats, and whatever crawls, slithers, and swims around your house! We encourage all animals to be on a leash or in a cage/bowl. If your pet is nervous around people, he/she may remain in the car with the windows down and we will come to them!

6:46! Fall Prayer Series

Begins Sept. 28

Do you have a Spirit-Tug to grow deeper in relationship with God through prayer?   As part of our new Adult Faith Milestones ministry, we announce a 5-part series to be offered on Mondays, Sept. 28 – Oct. 26, from 6:46-8:00 pm.   Our motivation is Mark 6:46, where Jesus says farewell to the crowds and goes “on the mountain to pray.”   We say farewell to the crowded schedules of our lives and gather at 6:46 in the sanctuary to connect more deeply with God through instruction, learning, and various experiences of prayer.  All are invited – bring a neighbor or friend!

Living Springs “Caring for Your Marriage” Retreat

November 13 – 15th

Spend a weekend caring for your marriage!

One of Living Springs own members, Air Force Chaplain, Rev. Kris Cox, will lead couples in this wonderful "MarriageCare" opportunity. This program was created by Air Force chaplains who are trained as marriage and family therapists.  It has been utilized and validated by our nation's uniformed men and women, and it is centered upon:
- I take you...
- To have and to hold...
- For better, for worse...
- To love and to cherish...

MarriageCare is NOT:
... hours of dry lecture or information overload about       marriage.
... an expert "formula" for you to apply (i.e., 10 steps to a perfect marriage).
... a venue for you or others air your intimate details to a larger group.
... a weekend stuck in a classroom.
... a "test" to measure the health of your marriage.

MarriageCare IS:
... for ALL couples, whether married 6 months or 60 years.
... for couples with healthy or stressed marriages.
... aware that you (and you alone) are the experts on your marriage.
... 4 hours of group "together" time to visit the essence of marriage vows.
... packed with free time for couples to reflect on sessions, enjoy each other and renew intimacy.
About our Leader:
Chaplain Cox currently serves as the Deputy Commandant of the Air Force Chaplain Corps College at Ft. Jackson. He is ordained in the ELCA, holds a M.Div. from Luther Seminary, and a M.S. in Counseling Psychology from Texas A&M, Central Texas. He is also a Marriage & Family Therapist (licensed in North Carolina).  He and his wife Rebecca have been married 24 years and they have two children in college.

Location:  Lutheran Retreat Center, Isle of Palms, SC

Cost
$210 - $230
$50 deposit due no later than Sunday September 27th.

LS FOOD MINISTRY TO HAVE IMPACT ON YOUNG LIVES:

Volunteers, Desserts & Donors Needed!

Thursdays thought October 29

As part of our vision to reach out to community youth and the next stage of our Food Ministry, Living Springs is partnering with Fellowship of Christian Athletes to sponsor a weekly devotional pre-game meal for youth of the Ridgeview JV team on Thursday afternoons.   Ridgeview is the high school located nearest to Living Springs, and many team members come from very difficult situations and need a lot of support.

Each Thursday, we need:
  • 6-8 VOLUNTEERS (men & women) to help serve the food – and more importantly, to interact with these young men to be examples of faith & caring in their lives.   We meet at church at 3:00 and transport our food to the school to serve the team. A pre-game devotion will be provided by Pastor and Lutheran Men.
  • DESSERTS for about 85 hungry boys each week.   Food Ministers Mark & Laura Cunningham are preparing the main meal, using a menu worked out with the coaches.   Desserts for 100 portions total per day should be dropped off at church prior to 2:30 each Thursday.   Cakes, cookies, pies, brownies – anything is welcome!
  • MEAL SPONSORS.   All donations are welcome –make checks to Living Springs and mark, “Football Food Ministry.”   Thrivent members can use one of your free $250 projects for a meal!  Or, if you know a business who could sponsor a meal, that would be great (about $300).  Contact LMM President Bob Turnmire.
You can help just 1 Thursday – or several.   Dates are Sept. 17; and Oct. 1, 8, 15, 22, 29.   Sign-up chart for volunteers and desserts is in the Admin. Building (or call the office).   May the Spirit tug at our hearts to respond to this call of love and grace!

Seasonal Name Tags

On Rally Day, we introduced a special weekly name tag that was designed by our Good News Team. The badges will reflect the theme of the season and a key scripture passage.   Please stop at the name tag table and fill out a weekly tag when you come to church on Sunday!   Studies indicate that one sign of a welcoming church is the use of name tags, so that new worshippers and recent members can know everyone by name (rather than being made to feel like an outsider).

Lessons for Sunday, September 20

First Reading: Jeremiah 11:18-20

Today’s reading tells of the suffering of the prophet Jeremiah, who announced God’s word to Judah but was met with intense opposition and persecution. Jeremiah continues to trust in God in the midst of his suffering.

Psalm (ELW): Psalm 54

God is my helper; it is the Lord who sustains my life. (Ps. 54:4)

Second Reading: James 3:13-4:3, 7-8a

The wisdom God gives unites our hearts and minds. Instead of living to satisfy our own wants and desires, we manifest this wisdom in peace, gentleness, mercy, and impartiality toward others.

Gospel: Mark 9:30-37

Jesus’ teaching and action in this text are directed to the church whenever it is seduced by the world’s definition of greatness: prestige, power, influence, and money. The antidote to such a concern for greatness is servanthood.

A Little Church Humor...

Mortal: What is a million years like to you?

God: Like one second.

Mortal: What is a million dollars like to you?

God: Like one penny.

Mortal: Can I have a penny?

God: Just a second.
