Arctic Circle and the World Ocean Forum
W2O | Ocean Exemplars
W2O Director Peter Neill is traveling to Rekyjavik, Iceland this week to attend the Arctic Circle Conference. He is there to engage some of the foremost thinkers on Arctic issues so that we might spark further conversations with presenters across a full range of topics. These will then be presented to our viewers as the World Ocean Forum within our catalog of communications. The World Ocean Forum will develop into an interactive conversation between scientists, activists, explorers, and the general public as a way to share information and get an engaging dialogue started about some of the big issues facing us today. Stay tuned: we will report back on the progress of the World Ocean Forum more in the coming months.

World Ocean Exhibits and W2O at the ICMM
World Ocean Exhibits
In November, the W2O is presenting at the 17th International Conference of Maritime Museums (ICMM) in Hong Kong. Our goal is to be a central location for a wide variety of ocean-related exhibits related to maritime heritage, culture, climate, art, science, and other examples of the important role that the ocean plays in our lives. By engaging the members of the ICMM, we hope to expand the maritime collection found at World Ocean Exhibits. Subjects include exploration, maritime culture, art, literature, shipping and ship building, transportation, trade, and more. We are seeking focused, evocative, timely subject matter that is well-suited for schools, libraries, museums, aquaria, and other educational organizations. If you know of a fantastic online exhibit that we should be linking to, please contact us.

by Peter Neill
Forward by Dr. Paul Mayewski
Director, Climate Change Institute
Available January 2016

THE ONCE AND FUTURE OCEAN aspires to transform our relationship with the ocean and the inter-connected cycles of water, essential for our survival. Ambitious in scope yet grounded in actionable ideas and solutions for preserving the health of the world ocean, The Once and Future Ocean offers a bold vision for a practical and possible future, based on a revolutionary paradigm shift that can be implemented through the political will of individuals who understand the necessity for change. It argues for invention and new solutions, for new answers to fundamental questions, and for a new relationship built around the ocean as a source for new models of living that are within our grasp if only we have the courage to take hold. Will be available as an e-book, in softcover, and in hardback January 2016.

“If we deny a complicated problem, then it is quite easy to ignore a complicated solution. If climate is the defining issue of our time, how can we ignore or stand outside its definition? If ignorance is the rejection of meaning, then why would we choose meaningless as a certain way toward collapse and failure?"

World Ocean Radio: Shell Resigns the Arctic
Shell Resigns the Arctic
About this episode: In late September Royal Dutch Shell announced it has terminated oil exploration and drilling efforts in the Arctic, citing disappointing exploratory results, high costs and strict regulations as their reasons to quit. In this episode of World Ocean Radio we assert that this is a great step forward for the protection of the Arctic and express hope that Shell will go on to invest in other projects such as solar and wind that they might help to shift the paradigm for the sustainable benefit of us all.

World Ocean Radio: Billion Oyster Project
The Billion Oyster Project
About this episode: Oysters have had a history of ebb and flow, plenty and scarcity, and in New York Harbor there was a time when the waters were so polluted that oyster populations diminished and interest in consumption vanished. Enter the Harbor School, an innovative high school on Governor’s Island on the East River in New York City. They have launched a project to revive the defunct oyster populations through an ambitious goal of restoring no less than one billion oysters to the harbor. In this episode of World Ocean Radio we discuss the school’s history and their restorative ecosystem service activities and their effort to reconnect the harbor to the 30 million people living within its vast urban watershed.

World Ocean Radio: Climate Future Planning
Climate Future Planning
About this episode: The climate is changing: changing moisture, increased temperature, accelerated growth and distribution of pollen, increased allergic reactions. Scientists agree that climate impacts are the defining issue of our time. Thankfully, many are working to build a framework for climate future planning. In this episode of World Ocean Radio we hail the work of Dr. Paul Mayewski and his team at the Climate Change Institute who are creating a powerful software matrix that will relate changes in the environment to plausible, scaleable scenarios and plans to meet the needs of our climate future.

World Ocean Radio: Moon and Ocean

Moon and Ocean
About this episode: World Ocean Radio host Peter Neill recently witnessed a beautiful full moon rise from an island perch in Maine. The silent, stealthy way that it rose in the sky got him ruminating about water, tide, sun, current, power, light, nature, human emotion, and the often under-appreciated, surreal force of the moon.
