People Express celebrate 25 years!
Since our first project in 1990 called 'Stitches in Time', People Express have had the joy of being able to work alongside the wonderful people of South Derbyshire and beyond, creating beautiful and inspiring artwork, providing communities with the opportunity to  collaborate with professional artists.
Now in our 25th year we are still constantly amazed by our participants ability to become empowered by learning new skills and making work they are proud of.
People Express would like to thank all participants, community groups, artists, friends and supporters who have been with us on our journey, so far. We would like to also give special thanks to Arts Council England, Derbyshire County Council, and South Derbyshire District Council for their continued support.
The Feel Good Factor
Exclusively for young people living on certain streets and postcodes in Newhall and Swadlincote, The Feel Good Factor runs every Monday at our building 3.30pm-5.30pm. Street names included are listed on our website here. If you live on one of these streets, and would like to come and take part in arts sessions, we would love for you to come along and join us. We will be launching art sessions at the Old Post Centre, Newhall in the new year. For more information please contact us on 01283 552962.
Feel Gorgeous
People Express hosted a two week long project for young people, over the Summer, focusing on positive wellbeing. Working with charity First Steps, we developed a programme of different activities including; yoga, healthy eating, collage making with Chila Burman, drama, poetry and they made their own home made smoothies on a smoothie bike, where pedal power generates movement of a blender to make beautiful fruity treats. Each wonderful young person shone over their time with us, discovering new skills and using their creativity to produce some amazing works which were exhibited and performed during the project. Special thanks to the wonderful students from Burton College who volunteered for the project.
Woodville Travels the World
In June, we launched a new project with Woodville Infant School, 'Woodville Travels the World'. The project was a response to feedback from teachers and parents that they would like children to have the opportunity to experience cultures from across the world. Over the course of a week pupils celebrated the cultures of Asia with Sushi Maker Hiroko Clark, Visual Artist Chila Burman, Indonesian dance with Nusantara, and Bollywood dance with Nupar Arts. The weeks activities culminated in a celebratory event showcasing the beautiful artwork produced , and sampled Malaysian food. Thank you to all of the wonderful pupils for their energy and enthusiasm throughout the week. The project will continue to make its way across the continents during this school year.
Crafty Chatters
Monday morning sessions continue from 10.30am-12.30pm at Oaklands Village. Participants have recently completed workshops with local printmaker and textile artist Caroline Bennett, producing handmade and digitised banners. Currently, the group are working with writer Jayne Williams and Filmmaker Adam Robertson, sharing their stories and wisdoms for the screen.
The Big WELCOME Cafe
The Swadlincote Aspergers Society are currently working on compiling the work of participants, created over the past year, into a book, to be published early next year. With stories, photography and different art forms, the book promises to be a colourful and creative read. To find out more about the work of the group click here.
Celebrate good times...
A party for all of the young people we have worked with over the past year, will be held on Friday 4th December at People Express. The event will run from 4-6pm, with lots of party games and refreshments. The evening will also be an opportunity to celebrate the wonderful achievements of our young people, including the presentation of Arts Award certificates on the evening.
