Spellmaker Newsletter

September 2015

________________________________

Happy Fall, Y’all!
Hard to believe it is already September! Where did Summer go? As much as we hate to see Summer go, Fall does see us busy with preparations for Fet Ghede, or Voodoo New Year, which is fast approaching.  Also, our House Khouzhan class is readying to accept their next round of initiations, which is very exciting! We are so very proud of our Khouzhans and the long hard hours of study and service they put in every week. The return of Mambo Sam’s Free Public classes has been very well received! If you have not yet had a chance to join in, but would like to view the first class, you may do so here! We hope you enjoy the recording, and we see you in class soon! Thank you all so much for all of your patronage!  We hope you enjoy the rest of the newsletter!

Lwa of the Month

Simbi Dlo

Simbi Dlo is Simbi of the Water- a powerful lwa of the Simbi family. One of the most famous powers that he has is the ability to silence someone or something. Simbi Dlo is very quiet himself and so he is said to have the power for silencing people and elements like negativity. This is something extremely useful to us because “to silence” is often a goal in spell work.

He is often very shy and withdrawn, especially at larger Vodou gatherings such as large dances at peristyles, etc. Sometimes a person can be possessed by him and ends up standing outside of the peristyle until someone figure out that there is a possession going on!

Simbi Dlo is served with white. There is also sometimes service to him with silver and even light blue. But in most traditional circles, it is white. His offerings are fresh water, cucumbers, and white creams — like sour cream and whipped cream.

Simbi Dlo can silence gossip, mental or emotional anguish, fighting in a relationship-anything that is needed.

Product tip of the month!

Do you use our potions?  If you are using our Miss Fannie Bell's Bayou Vodou Potions did you know these make great spiritual bath oils?

Using just a capful of these potions while you soak in a bath will imbue your whole body with whatever purpose you are working on - love, luck, etc.  Time some alone time in the bath soaking in the essence of what it is that you want to accomplish.

To use:  Shower or bathe first so that you are already clean.   Run clean bathwater for yourself and put about a capful of your chosen potion in the bath water. Soak while focusing on your desires.

Don't rinse the potion off, try to air dry after this bath, and enjoy a great magickal day!

Sometimes I think there is nothing more magickal than the scents of our Cosmic Voodoo™ Incenses!  Creating an atmosphere for magick by the use of incense has been used for thousands of years.  Remnants of ancient incense burners and incense resins have been found in the Egyptian pyraminds and Mayan tombs.   Our incense packs, which include 35-45 cones as well as a free incense burner and complete instructions, are one of our most popular items.  If you haven't tried any lately, or are out of your favorite-

Autumn Equinox!

"Equinox" means "equal night" in Latin.  But even if the name suggests it and it’s widely accepted, it isn't entirely true that day and night are exactly the same – 12 hours day and 12 hours night – on the equinox all over the world – but it is close! The sun enters the astrological sign of Libra on this day, which is the sign of scales and balance.

Description: Libra
The astrological symbol for Libra, indicating a rising/setting sun, suggests the balance between day and night.

What is in a name, anyhow? Well, Wiccans call this night Mabon. The Druids call this celebration, Mea'n Fo'mhair, and honor the The Green Man, the God of the Forest.  The Strega call this time Equinozio di Autunno.  Other names you may see include Second Harvest, Harvest Home Cornucopia, Winter Finding, Wine Festival, Pagan Thanksgiving, and Alben Elfed.

However, while the Autumn Equinox has come to mean so much more to many different groups across the globe, there are several threads that are common throughout:
Colors common to Autumn Equinox are dark browns, reds, orange and golden yellows.
Common symbols include the cornucopia, harvested foods (such as apples, pumpkins, potatoes, gourds, nuts, etc), loaves of bread and sheaves of grain, colorful leaves, Indian corn, pine cones, wines and more.
Common herbs associated with this celebration are marigold, rose, honeysuckle, thistle, myrrh, pine, sage and tobacco.

Common Themes

Equinox is considered a time of balance. In Autumn, it is when we stop and relax and enjoy the fruits of our personal harvests, whether they be from toiling in our gardens, working at our jobs, raising our families, or just coping with day to day life. Make a list of your inner harvest. An inner harvest refers to all the achievements and experiences that you have had or felt during the past few seasons. This is a way of restoring gratitude into your life, as you realize what you have done and how you have coped with challenges during the past months. Autumn is also the perfect time to assess your needs for the coming Winter. Think about ways you may have neglected your own personal growth, and what can be done to remedy that in the coming months?

Some activities associated with the Autumn Equinox:

Build an altar – can be as simple as a candle and some colorful flowers or as elaborate as you like!
Description: C:\Users\Wendy\Pictures\Products\mabon1.jpg
Spend time in nature – go for a hike and admire the sun on the autumn leaves, take a hayride, go apple picking, make a scarecrow, decorate with gourds, pumpkins and corn stalks.

Spend time indoors – declutter your corners, do some smudging, decorate with candles, wash your windows to let in more light for the coming months, get your “nest” ready for winter.

There are a great many different ways to celebrate this wonderful day – and all of them are correct!  Celebrations can be extravagant or simple, day long or just a few reverent moments.  Whether you choose to celebrate with a group of kindred spirits, or fly solo, make the celebration meaningful to you!
