Residents' Update:

Dear All,
Another week has gone by and time for our update. It was sad to hear the news this week of the death of Roy Barker, a former Councillor of Cheylesmore Ward. Roy, who lived in our area, was a Councillor for a number of years until his retirement in 2001. We send our condolences to his wife and family.

Cheylesmore Community Centre Extension
Residents have asked us why the new entrance at the Cheylesmore Community Centre is taking so long to finish. Here are the responses of the Centre manager .
When is it expected to be finished?
Somewhere around Spring/ Summer 2016
Why the delay?
The total project is £200,000 including the inside refurbishment and new offices and rooms. We didn't get all the grants we applied. One particular one for over £50K and another was for £20K. If we had received these we would have finished in August 2015.
If the residents concerned would like to help us in fundraising or support us in other ways please email paulj@cheylesmorecentre.co.uk
With thanks
Paul Jamieson - Centre Manager

Friends of Sowe Valley Whitley Grove Woods Group
Currently the Friends Group is concentrating on removing the non-native laurel trees in the wood. Some of these trees are over 50 feet tall. Their foliage is so dense that it blocks out the sunlight for our native trees and plants. The group drags the laurel branches for over 300m to the entrance to the wood for shredding. Their next tidy-up day is on Sat October 24th, if you’d like to help.

Trigger is still looking for a home
In our Friargate updates, we have frequently reported about ‘’Trigger’’ the metal horse piece of art that used to stand on the old junction six Island. Due to his poor condition and no home, he was put into storage. Apparently the corrosion he’s suffered over the years has really taken its toll and it would not be safe to put him back out in the open.
The Council has invested some of the ERDF funding received to repair him so he's strong enough to go indoors somewhere. Do you know of an indoor home where he could spend the rest of his days, enjoyed by Coventry residents? Let us know your suggestions.
Japanese Knotweed
In past updates, we have reported about the Council’s treatment of the Japanese knot weed. In our area we have this non-native invasive plant growing in the London Road cemetery and near to Abbey Road at the side of the River Sherbourne.
Recent changes in legislation have given local authorities powers to take legal action, where necessary, against the owners of private land where these plants, mainly Japanese Knotweed and Giant Hogweed, are invading neighbouring properties. Both species spread easily and are difficult and expensive to treat.
A report will be discussed at a Cabinet Member meeting for Policing and Equalities on Thursday 24th September at 2pm in the Council House. If approved, it will give the Council enforcement powers to take action against those owners of land who do nothing to control the spread of these plants.
