ALOHA. Well, it's been a whirlwind of activity for Makai this summer. Our Ocean Energy team was very busy getting our OTEC plant operational, our cable team released new tools for subsea power cable installers, and we have unveiled our Marine Corrosion Lab for defense and commercial clients. It's been a record-breaking hot summer in Hawaii with El Niño’s warmer water surrounding us. This has spawned a number of  hurricanes that have (thankfully) nearly missed Hawaii. But on the bright side, that warmer water is great for ocean thermal power!  

As always, you may expect short, simple updates on our cool ocean technologies, twice yearly. Please let us know what you think. We're listening. We hope you enjoy!

Mark it down in the record books, folks:
Ocean thermal power has officially arrived to the U.S. grid!

On August 21st, Hawaii’s Governor David Ige and other dignitaries helped Makai to flip the switch and dedicate the world's largest operational Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) power plant with a dedication ceremony held at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority (NELHA). This breakthrough marks the first true closed-cycle OTEC plant to be connected to a U.S. electrical grid, and represents a major achievement for Hawaii, the United States, and marine renewable energy.

So, what's next? Makai and NELHA recently signed a memorandum of understanding with a consortium of companies from Japan to develop a 1MW-class OTEC plant in Hawaii. Once built, this would be the first OTEC plant capable of generating operating profits, and would provide critical data on the real cost of operating and maintaining an OTEC power plant.

Makai's Subsea Cable Team
 
The subsea power cable industry can now benefit from enhancements of MakaiLay, and its desktop simulation sister product, MakaiPlan Pro, two of the world's leading submarine cable software packages. The new software tools for power cable installers include Shape Calculator and Heave Analysis, both to help ensure that power cable bend radii and tensions are within acceptable limits during different sea states and lay conditions.

Makai's Marine Corrosion Team
 
Makai has recently opened the doors of our Marine Corrosion Laboratory in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. The Marine Corrosion Lab is located at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority (NELHA) and uses state-of-the-art equipment to provide premier corrosion and biofoul testing services. It is the only location in the U.S. where large flows of shallow and deep seawater from depths of up to 3,000 feet are continuously available, providing direct access to the corrosive environments experienced by offshore vessels and subsea equipment.

At the lab, Makai supports our clients in two ways:
  1. First, we perform research and testing to investigate the corrosion problem, and
  2. Second, we provide engineering designs to solve it. 
Our research, testing, and engineering support includes: material exposure testing, biofouling mitigation, antifouling coatings, marine coating development, marine alloy evaluation and certification, heat exchanger design and performance testing, materials characterization (cost savings and life-cycle management), and corrosion-resistant mechanical and naval architecture designs.

Makai will be presenting a paper on our work at the facility at the 2015 Department of Defense – Allied Nations Technical Corrosion Conference on November 15-19 in Pittsburgh – contact us to set up a meeting.

Dr. Venkata Jasti, Ph.D.

Mechanical Engineer / Numerical Modeler
 
Dr. Jasti, or "Venkat," came to Makai in 2009, after earning his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Carnegie Mellon. He is a key engineer for the commercial side of our submarine cable group. This includes maintaining our proprietary submarine cable model, sales, and training of our flagship MakaiLay and MakaiPlan software to our clients world-wide.

Venkat also conducts simulations and feasibility studies of submarine cable lays. In recent times, he has focused on applying the extensive knowledge Makai has gained from telecom cable installations to benefit the growing installations in subsea power cable (MakaiLay Power link) and seismic exploration markets (MakaiLay Seismic link). Apart from work and spending time with his wife Kavya and daughter Smriti, he is an avid follower of Cricket, Formula One racing, and the NBA.
