Greetings,

Happy re-entry time. Because of the gorgeous weather, it was a little harder this year for me and many in France and New York to say goodbye to summer routines.

September 1 is the semi-official French Rentrée, at least that is what the sales say and was the date my little friend, Simone, went to first grade for the first time. Here in America, the day after Labor Day Monday, this year the 8th, is the semi-official Rentrée. That’s the day my big friend, Edward, greets the new college freshmen.

The weather this three-day Labor Day Weekend in New York was indeed superb…sunny, clear, warm, low humidity, mild breeze. Wow. We celebrated by being outside as much as possible. A highlight was spending an afternoon in New York’s Central Park, starting at the Conservatory Gardens at Fifth Avenue and 106th Street and ending up at the Park’s Tavern on the Green restaurant at 67th Street.

Dinner was lovely, especially my first oysters of the season, but I am sure the family after family we saw picnicking throughout the park’s fields and rolling lawns and playing in the sun enjoyed their meals enormously. It is really impressive to see so many people from so many ethnic and socio-economic classes enjoying themselves in this spectacular New York destination.

A special treat was the breathtakingly beautiful flowers in the conservatory gardens—the keepers of the Luxembourg Gardens should take lessons here. And a special surprise was spending time with a gorgeous orange Monarch butterfly drifting amid flower after more beautiful flower.

So ends La Rentrée ever so softly and peacefully for me after a splendid summer in Provence and New York with friends and nature.

And now comes Vancouver for a charity event and some oysters in support of the Vancouver Symphony. It has been a while since I’ve been in that impressive city and welcome seeing old friends and acquaintances and revisiting “Books to Cooks” bookstore. In October, I’ll be back in Paris for the publication my oyster book in French!  Though Meet Paris Oyster will be called there (and in French speaking Canada) Le Paris des Huîtres.

Wishing you a pleasant and productive season,

Mireille
