“Terracotta and Wine” Conference Proceedings

Published on the website of Artenova

The  technical comparison of the event organized by the workshop of Leonardo Parisi is now downloadable

On Artenova’s website it’s now possible to access on line the Proceedings of the Conference entitled "Experiences of wine making from around the world" which was held last November during the event "Terracotta and Wine 2014" organized by Artenova, the terracotta artisans of Impruneta (Tuscany).

It consists of over 130 pages divided into three main thematic sections accompanied by ample illustrations. The images and contents of the proceedings, are a record of the interventions of the three guest speakers: Professor Christophe Caillaud, director of the Gallo-Roman Museum of Vienne in France; Dr. Luigi Armanino author of a thesis in viticulture and oenology; Professor Antonio Tirelli of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Milan. The combination “Terracotta and Wine” was approached both from a historical and a technical point of view and was the leading theme of all three interventions.

The first section by Professor Christophe Caillaud, is an interesting excursion through the world of amphorae from early archeological findings of ancient times up to the present day and the different traditions of the ancient and modern world of terracotta vessels for containing wine:  tinajas from Spain, kvevri from Georgia and the Portuguese Talhas. A separate photographic documentation is reserved for the experience of Artenova, which Caillaud refers to as "Un nouvel élan en Italie" (A new beginning in Italy).

The second section of the proceedings entitled "Preliminary investigation on the evolution of Barbara d'Asti in terracotta” is an extract from the thesis of Dr. Luigi Armanino. The case study illustrates the characteristics of the most cultivated grape in Piedmont with the analysis of the differences in the development of Barbera wine aged in terracotta and in wood. The thesis examines in particular the phenomenon of oxidisation, how oxygen reacts and the role of sulphites in wine contained in terracotta wine-jars and in oak barrels.

Finally, the last section of the conference by Professor Tirelli is about the characterization of  “Cerasuolo di Vittoria” made in terracotta, with a series of technical comparisons between oak barrels and terracotta wine jars using the parameters of the wine.

The Proceedings published on the website of Artenova were collected and selected by Sergio Bettini, coordinator and organiser of "Terracotta and Wine 2014", with the collaboration of Adriano Zago, agronomist, oenologist and expert in bio-dynamics.
