Clinical Pearl:
PT Tip of the Month
Remember when . . .
I'm so old I remember when there was no Novocain for dentistry. Wow! Really?
Yup! We just had to grin and bear it as the dentist had us in a headlock and that drill worked its way through the decayed enamel. Our trigeminal nerves were on fire as we prayed for it to be over. Then they gave us a sugar sucker afterwards. Now that’s job security!
Even when they did offer Novocain, they charged $5 extra and we could not afford it, so back into the headlock I went, holding on the thought of a grape sucker that I would get when the torture was over.

Questions from the Mail Room
Q: I hope you will give your opinion on what causes the pain during straight leg elevation SLE, in patients with referred leg pain? SLE is used often in assessment but what causes the pain?
Terry, PT
A: The symptoms you ask about are many times caused as the nerve root and it's sleeve becomes anoxic, that is to say for whatever reason it is not getting is normal blood supply and that may be due to pressure by disk or osteophyte. The piriformis may also cause this but that is usually more of a variation in the lateral rotators of the hip muscles which may also squeeze or pressure the sciatic nerve's blood supply. Be that as it may, long sitting in bucket car seats or long airplane trips can cause this. Counterstrain technique can help significantly as long as the sacrum is not also in a less than anatomical position. That would require the use of Muscle Energy Technique to get the sacrum back to anatomical position.

Links of childhood pain to adult chronic pain, fibromyalgia
There is strong evidence showing that individuals who experienced chronic pain during childhood have chronic pain as adults, but few studies have evaluated the characteristics of pain that persists from childhood through adult years. Researchers have found that one in six . . .

Our Seminars
Muscle Energy Technique is one of the most effective and valuable manual techniques for the identification and correction of somatic asymmetry and hypomobility. These techniques can be used immediately to find and correct the causes of all types of pain. These are not cover up procedures, but rather techniques that cure the problem with dramatic results.
Unlike manipulative techniques, MET works via evidenced-based neuro-physiology using the muscle spindles to release tight muscles and decrease tone and excitability, thus restoring the bones and joints to normal mobility and returning them to symmetrical, smooth function.
The two-day courses involve a mix of theory, demonstration and hands-on practice. Actual evaluation and treatments will be performed by each participant using the methods learned. Plenty of time is allotted for hands on practice as well as questions and discussion.
Due to the hands-on nature of these courses, class size is limited to assure a very high quality educational experience. Attend one of our seminars and don't miss this magnificent educational opportunity!

Host an MET Course
Hosting an MET course of your very own can be a big advantage in several ways and it’s easier than you think. With continuing education requirements now for most states, the cost of sending a single participant to a course can cost upwards of $1,200.00 for a weekend class. That can eat up your CEU money in no time flat.
