Fall 2015 Edition Highlights:

Hockey Canada's Esso Cup Comes to Morden for 2017.

The City of Morden recently received the nod to host Hockey Canada’s 2017 Esso Cup National Tournament and the Host Committee is moving ahead to ensure a successful event.

The Esso Cup is a national female midget hockey tournament with five regional champions from across Canada competing with the local host team for the Esso Cup and the right to be called national champions. The event will be covered by media and the final game will be broadcast by TSN.

Morden and the AAA Female Pembina Valley Hawks will welcome teams from across Canada to compete for the Esso Cup in April 2017. With approximately 1 ½ years to plan the event, organizers are starting the preliminary planning. Please watch the media for sponsorship opportunities, updates and volunteer recrui

“The 2017 Esso Cup is a truly unique opportunity for the City of Morden,” said Mayor Ken Wiebe. “Morden has a strong culture and love of hockey, and this major event will showcase our great community on a national stage.”

The Host Committee will be moving full-steam-ahead into preparing, which includes organizing volunteers and offering sponsorship packages. Residents who are interested in these opportunities may contact Clare Agnew at 204-822-5431 or cagnew@mordenmb.com.

Morden residents are amongst the highest
recycling users in the province!
Did  you know that over 80% of Morden residents recycle and we have one of the lowest contamination rates in the province (5%); that currently almost 40% of our current waste to landfill is compostable material that could be re-used and in doing so divert >700,000kg of waste from our landfill?  In fact there’s more...

The Multi-Material Stewardship Manitoba (MMSM) 2014 audit puts the recycling participation rate for Morden’s single-family dwellings at 84% and 71% for multiple-family dwellings.  And, in 2014 Morden residents diverted over 90 kg per person of recyclables—up from 68.5 kg in 2013--that’s a 32% increase! And it is among one of the highest diversion rates in Manitoba and one of the largest year-over-year increases in per capita diversion.

FALL COMPOST PICK UP WEEK:  OCTOBER 19-23, 2015
Leaves, grass clippings, and garden refuse will be collected on your scheduled pickup day. *REMINDER* plastic bags will not be picked up. Items should be contained in certified-compostable paper bags, cardboard boxes, and tree branches should be bundled and tied. Be sure to place bags at the curbside prior to 8:00 a.m. on your scheduled pickup day.
Public Works
Roads & Sidewalks:
We have completed construction of a new sidwalk on the north side of Stephen Street and replaced concrete on the north side of Thornhill Street. Tactile warning pads were installed on Stephen Street and North Railway sidewalks--a safety feature that will improve navigation for a number of residents. Asphalt crack filling is now complete for the season on the following streets: Gilmour Street, Wardrop Street, 9th Street, 6th Street, 5th Street, and Dunsford Street.

Utility:
Utility Crews have been performing the annual hydrant flushing program, and as a result you may have noticed murky water coming from your taps. When this occurs run your taps for several minutes, usually this will clear up quickly.

Water Treatment Plant:
The City is currently implementing a project for the installment of an ultraviolet disinfection to supplement the chlorine disinfection process. The target completion date is early spring 2016. This will increase the health aspect of our potable water.

Hello from Morden Fire & Rescue.
The summer has been somewhat quiet from a response perspective however has been busy from a preparedness standpoint. The biggest thing to be added to the community has been the CodeRED emergency warning system. The original plan was to have the program launched on July 2/15 with a test. Mother Nature had other plans as we needed to launch an actual Tornado Warning June 24 & 27/15. The system worked very well, it was the launch personnel that needed a bit of work. Ya that was me! With only training on paper behind me there was a few things I could have done better. With all that said the message did get out with good responses from citizens. If you have not taken advantage of downloading the CodeRED Mobile Alerts app onto your smartphone, I really encourage you to do so. There are a number of good reasons to download, but the most important is that you will be notified of an emergency in Morden where ever you may be.

Now the response to CodeRED has grown in our area to now include the RM of Stanley residents as well as of Sept 1/15. This is great news. Usually weather emergencies that happen in Morden will affect residents in Stanley as well. Now they will have the warning system available to them. If you know of friends or family living in the rural areas of Stanley, encourage them to also download the app on their smartphones too.

We have also re-installed the audible City Siren on the roof top of the Fire Hall. This is the same siren that was previously used for alerting residents in the past however for safety reasons it was removed from downtown. This siren will be used to alert persons that may be outside and not have devises available to them for warning of an emergency. The desire was to be able to notify children playing on the school grounds or activity on the ball diamonds to take shelter. The bonus is that it does cover a lot of the community as was experienced in our test of the system prior to Corn & Apple weekend. With the added system of CodeRed and the Siren in place, we may not be able to prevent weather emergencies, but we can be prepared. From all of us at Morden Fire & Rescue, Play hard and Play safe.
- Andy Thiessen, Fire Chief
