Remembrance Day

Saturday November 11th, 2017
Canadians recognize Remembrance Day, originally called Armistice Day, every 11 November at 11 a.m. It marks the end of hostilities during the First World War and an opportunity to recall all those who have served in the nation’s defence.

Armistice Day

Armistice Day was inaugurated in 1919 throughout much of the British Empire, but on the second Monday in November. In 1921, the Canadian Parliament passed an Armistice Day bill to observe ceremonies on the first Monday in the week of 11 November, but this combined the event with the Thanksgiving Day holiday. For much of the 1920s, Canadians observed the date with little public demonstration. Veterans and their families gathered in churches and around local memorials, but observances involved few other Canadians.

In 1928, some prominent citizens, many of them veterans, pushed for greater recognition and to separate the remembrance of wartime sacrifice from the Thanksgiving holiday. In 1931, the federal government decreed that the newly named Remembrance Day would be observed on 11 November and moved Thanksgiving Day to a different date. Remembrance Day would emphasize the memory of fallen soldiers instead of the political and military events leading to victory in the First World War.

Terry Kelly - A Pittance of Time (Official Version)

On November 11, 1999 Terry Kelly was in a drug store in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. At 10:55 AM an announcement came over the stores PA asking customers who would still be on the premises at 11:00 AM to give two minutes of silence in respect to the veterans who have sacrificed so much for us.

Terry was impressed with the stores leadership role in adopting the Legions two minutes of silence initiative. He felt that the stores contribution of educating the public to the importance of remembering was commendable.

When eleven oclock arrived on that day, an announcement was again made asking for the two minutes of silence to commence. All customers, with the exception of a man who was accompanied by his young child, showed their respect.

Terrys anger towards the father for trying to engage the stores clerk in conversation and for setting a bad example for his child was channeled into a beautiful piece of work called, A Pittance of Time. Terry later recorded A Pittance of Time and included it on his full-length music CD, The Power of the Dream.

Communities across Canada prepare for solemn Remembrance Day tributes

Canadians across the country and around the world today will reflect on the sacrifices made in past and present conflicts.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will not be in Ottawa for the ceremony, as he's currently on a diplomatic trip to southeast Asia. He did, however issue a statement.

"Every generation of Canadians has answered the call to serve. From Ypres to Dieppe to Korea to Afghanistan, our servicemen and women have shown courage as a matter of course, and stood resilient in the face of great adversity," he said in a written statement.

For Julie Payette, today marks the first Remembrance Day service she attends since becoming Governor General and Canada's commander-in-chief.

Payette is scheduled to join veterans and other dignitaries at the national ceremony, held each year at the National War Memorial in Ottawa.

Watch CBC's Remembrance Day Special with Rosemary Barton and Ian Hanomansing on CBC-TV and CBC News Network from 10 a.m. to noon ET Nov. 11, or stream on CBCNews.ca, Twitter or YouTube.

A Reverse Advent Calendar

Advent is the perfect for focusing on the joy of the season, but it can also seem really commercial.  A couple of years ago we started our Advent acts of kindness, an alternative advent for kids to try and refocus this time away from receiving to giving. Lasy year we made a Reverse Advent Calendar.

What is a Reverse Advent Calendar?

I would love to say this is my idea, but I am sure it has been around a while.  Firstly you need to grab a basket or box, and every day leading up to Christmas, add something useful to the box.

The idea is that you add 24 items just like an advent calendar. Then you can donate it to a food bank, a family in need or your church.

A reverse advent calendar is perfect to do as a group too.  You can put the box in your classroom, workplace or do it as a larger family group and take turns at adding to it.
