Open Meeting - 16 Nov

We have our next open meeting on Thursday 16 November at the Richmond Building, University of Portsmouth.

Last month we sent an email urging support for the Portsmouth City Council motion to support cycling in the city. We are pleased to report that there was unanimous support from councillors for a commitment to spending on cycling. This is great news, but we need detail on where the money will be spent (and of course we’ll keep pushing for more!). We like the approach of Southampton City Council, which has produced a detailed 10-year cycling strategy.

The author of Southampton’s cycling strategy will be giving a presentation at our meeting on Thursday 16 November. There will be a chance to find out what they are doing and how well it is working (and see how much of it we can copy!).

The meeting will take place on Thursday 16 November at 7.00pm in Lecture Theatre 2 of the Richmond Building of the University of Portsmouth.  We start at 7.00pm, so please arrive 10-15 minutes earlier.

Cycle surgeries

These are NOT bike repair sessions!

What are the issues that you face cycling in Portsmouth? What do you think should be fixed? And how?

You’ll have the chance to speak to PCC council officers involved with cycling before the meeting. It starts at 6.15, and is first come, first served.

Boris bikes for Portsmouth?

There has been talk of ‘Boris’ bike hire schemes over the years. Now it likely we could have two or more competing!  Actually, neither is on the scale or budget of the Santander bike hire scheme in London, but they both offer public bike hire.

The city council is talking to potential operators, although no council money would be spent. They are expecting their scheme to start next Spring. Find out more in this report from The News.

The University of Portsmouth is also bidding for a cycle hire scheme.  This is a ‘crowd-funded’ competition for Santander bikes. To find out more, and maybe invest in it, see here.

We wish both schemes well, but of course we need that cycle strategy and funding commitment to make cycling safer whether you are riding a hire bike, or your own bike.
