November 2017 - Newsletter

“Love in action is service.” – Ken Essien
Perspective - LSN on LinkedIn
Our social media plan has evolved again.  Specifically, I’ve chosen to share “work with purpose” articles on my personal LinkedIn page rather the LSN “company” page.  It’s an easier way to share and there are many more connections.  My “tagline” in LinkedIn, and my purpose in just about all I do, is “live, work and serve to your purpose, passion and potential”.  I segment this message across three places:
We also have a Twitter feed, Blog and this newsletter which in total have about 2,700 followers.  Many of my connections on LinkedIn are social service professionals.  I just want to say again that I admire your service and want to thank you for all you do.
LinkedIn is a simple way to network even as a volunteer.  You connect with friends, former and current co-workers and people who work or serve in businesses, social service, education and more.  It’s a way to document and share who you are too - even if a little intimidating to know what to share publicly.  Click the icon above to link with me personally right now.

Network Updates
Volunteer NKY
Metrics & Dashboard Workshop.  Twenty organizations from across the region participated in our 2nd workshop of 2017.  We did a quick review of Vision and Best Practices and then a deep-dive into Metrics.  “You get what you measure” was a saying at work and I still believe this.  The Volunteer Dashboard integrates an organization’s volunteer vision, metrics and best practices assessment to highlight key improvement projects.

Live with Purpose
Mentor for Purpose Team.  The team met in November to review the masterplan.  Good progress is being made on customer-prioritized content including Mentoring 101.  LSN is supporting nine organizations who have or are starting up mentoring programs.  This month, we agreed that we need to have flexible and modular content.  We need various ways to enable mentor learning including 1:1 coaching, workshops, reading and videos.  This is now part of our vision.

Don’t forget to check the What’s New section of our web site.  This is a simple way to keep track of new LSN content.
Mentors Needed
Have you ever personally considered being a mentor?
LSN is supporting many local organizations with mentoring programs and I believe you have mentoring skills and don’t even know it.  Contact us to see who which organizations need mentors and allow us to direct you to an organization that matches your passion.  Our toolbox is designed to help you develop the needed skills.  There are many short articles that have been written in our blogs and the Life Skills Wiki
From The LSN Toolbox
Rather than a specific tool, I want to talk about the LSN toolbox in general.  By “toolbox”, I mean the collection of wiki pages, articles, tools and templates and ideas.  Here is a recap:
  • Life Skills Wiki37 topics are covered from Money Management to Job & Career and Spirituality.  These are designed for volunteers who want to become better life skills instructors or mentors.
  • Life Skills Lesson Plans.  About 50 plans are available upon request.  All are designed in an easy-to-use 2-page format with instructor notes.  Each can be facilitated in 30-60 minutes.
  • Tools and Templates.  Examples include Career Planning, Vision & Goals and Volunteer Playbook.  These templates can be used in an exercise or in a Dreambook.
  • BlogOver 120 "250 Word"  blogs have been published over the past three years.  They can easily be adapted for small group discussion.
  • Volunteer SolutionsWe have tools for individuals such Connect events and the Volunteer Playbook.  We have tools for organizations such as Vision, Best Practices and Dashboard.
Some things like the Wiki are in the public domain which anyone in the world can access.  Many things must be requested.  All are available for free.
250 Words
My blogs are about life, life skills, service and living to our purpose and potential.  I aim to write about 250 Words (the amount an average adult can read in one minute).
  • Purposeful Seniors.  Seniors are a valuable commodity to family and community.  This talent and capacity must be nurtured individually and systemically.
  • Attitude and AptitudeLiving to our potential includes elements of attitude and aptitude.  Put together, they help us soar to new heights in our personal or work lives.
Recent Social Media Postings
Unlike the LSN Blog which is original content, the Facebook and LinkedIn postings are articles gathered from the internet.  The themes match the blogs.  Here are recent favorites:
  • Live with PurposeTips for Talking to People You Disagree With.  Assuming ill motives almost instantly cuts us off from truly understanding why someone does and believes as they do. We forget they’re a human being with a lifetime of experience that shaped their mind, we get stuck on that first wave of anger, and the conversation has a very hard time ever moving beyond it.
  • Volunteer NKYCompassion Becomes Real When We Recognize Our Shared Humanity.
  • Work with Purpose:  How to Make Your Life More Meaningful.  A meaningful life contains three features:  PURPOSE – having and trying to achieve life goals which you consider to be important and of significance.  COMPREHENSION – Making sense of the events that have taken place in your life and noticing how they weave into a coherent whole.  MATTERING – the belief that your existence is valuable.

Recommended Web Site - Cincinnati Cares
We recently met with the leaders of Inspiring Service and received a preview of their new Cincinnati Cares web site
.  This is already a great database for:

  • Seeing upcoming city-wide events
  • Discovering hundreds of non-profits engaging volunteers and the many ways in which you can help and
  • Exploring causes you care about and see the organizations that support them.

If you are a non-profit and want to get listed, sent a note to info@cincinnaticares.org.

The Life Solutions Network encourages “purpose, passion, positivity and potential” in the form of capability-building service to our community.  If you want to become a Member, send me an e-mail.  Membership is free; I only ask that you commit to “capability-building”.  Thank you for your friendship, partnership and service.
