2. Elder or Old? Navigating the Passage from Midlife to Elderhood, with Marilyn Daniels, Mon Nov 20, 7 pm, Toronto, from Spirituality In Health-Care Network
If we (or our clients) accept mainstream stereotypes of aging, there is a grave danger that we may simply decline and grow old. But if we can hold a different vision for our later years, and navigate growing older with courage and wisdom, something else is possible: true elderhood, the pinnacle of our psycho-spiritual maturity and contribution to the world.
3. The Stories We Don't Tell: Ten Thousand Leagues, Sat. Nov 25, Toronto,

4. Three Research-Backed Ways to Prevent Employee Burnout,
by Emma Seppälä, from Fulfillment Daily
Compared with 20 years ago, people are twice as likely to report that they are always exhausted. Close to 50% of people say they are often or always exhausted due to work -- a 32% increase from two decades ago. What’s more, the more people are exhausted, the lonelier they feel. This is not just a result of social isolation, but due to the emotional exhaustion of workplace burnout.
5. Book: The Oxford Handbook of Compassion Science, by Emma Seppälä et al
Covers multiple levels of life from the individual, to the group, to the organization and culture. The Handbook treats the subject of compassion science with careful scientific scrutiny and concern. It explores the motivators of compassion, the effect on physiology, the co-occurrence of wellbeing, and compassion training interventions... while pulling together research across neurobiological, developmental, evolutionary, social, clinical, and applied areas in psychology such as business and education.

Conferences & Workshops: Various Locations

1. Gratitude & Well-Being at Work, Nov 17, San Francisco
Research suggests that expressing and receiving gratitude at work makes people feel happier and more fulfilled, cooperative, motivated, and effective. Yet we are less likely to feel or express gratitude at work than anyplace else: Only 10 percent of Americans say they express gratitude to their colleagues every day, and 60 percent say they never or very rarely express it. And according to the U.S. Department of Labor, the number one reason why people leave their jobs is because they don’t feel appreciated.

Inspiration & Reflection:  Online

1. We've become so linked in, we're losing connections by Rev. Shana Lynngood, in the Spiritual View blog, Vancouver Courier online
A recent study had found that 82% of smartphone users said that the phone had diminished their most recent in person interaction -- and that 1 in 4 people in the US feel as though they have no one to talk to. We have so many ways to connect virtually, yet it seems to be undermining our ability to connect face-to-face...

2. The REAL Las Vegas, Oct 10/17 + "Healing and Patience", Nov. 2017
- by Fr. Max Oliva, SJ
The news showed us what happened in Las Vegas in early October. But what didn't we see? Fr. Max Oliva shares more... and also reflects on the patience that will be needed for healing.

3. Quote: True belonging is a spiritual practice, and it’s about the ability to find sacredness in both being a part of something but also the courage to stand alone.
- Brené Brown, PhD (interview with Marie Forleo: see 2:34 to 5:23)

4. Quote: Only holiness will call people to listen now. And the work of holiness is not about perfection or niceness; it is about belonging, that sense of being in the Presence and through the quality of that belonging, the mild magnetic of implicating others in the Presence. This is not about forging a relationship with a distant God but about the realization that we are already within God. - John O'Donohue
(quoted in Brene Brown's book, Braving the Wilderness)

5. You Are Loved (Don't Give Up), by Josh Groban  (worth listening to again)

"Three years ago I was very depressed. Not suicidal. Just crestfallen. Somehow I happened upon this song. I don't care if it is corny. This song motivated me to stand up and move towards a happier future." (Comment from a viewer on YouTube)
