More from LSU on the potential impact of an altered federal tax code as 45K season FB tickets are tied to donations to the Tiger Athletic Fund, which generates in the ballpark of $50M annually. Senior Assoc. AD for External Affairs Munson: "Frankly, even a small percentage of them, would represent a multi-million dollar hit to our organization. Even just 20 percent of that – $10 (million) to $12 million a year – is not something we can absorb. Not anywhere close." A related issue would be the underpinning finances of bonds for major facility projects. Former state politics bigwig Jones notes how increased revenues tied to donations have helped athletic programs across the board, not just FB. Tigers AD Alleva: "Every time it's come up in the past, it's been defeated, because of the drastic impact it could have on intercollegiate athletics." More opinions from around the state. (link)
USF's $40M push to build a new FB support complex gets $5M from key university donors Les & Pam Muma, part of another $15M the Mumas are committing to the institution, bringing their lifetime total to $56M+. This gift is of the legacy variety, so USF can borrow against the future cash. Bulls AD Harlan noted last week $10M was needed for the indoor practice facility portion of the overall FB project. The Muma's are also giving $1M each to MBB, WBB and Men's Golf as part of this donation. (link)
UCF also with key facility progress as the Knights broke ground on their new Athletics Village concept. AD White says it's "inevitable that we’ll be playing at the same level as schools in our state like Florida and Florida State." Major donor Dixon, whose name adorns the new project, on FB HC Frost, "Scott can do no wrong here and I believe we’re going to keep him. However, when you lay out a financial package like Florida could, it’s hard to say no to financial freedom. … But give us less than five years and we’ll be able to match their offers. We’re scared … but cautiously optimistic he’ll stay." (link)
Looks like former Tennessee/Florida State AD Hart has launched his next project, Athletics Legacy Partners. Primary products: Executive coaching & leadership development. Testimonials from a number of notable leaders around the business. "When people from within the athletics industry, including athletics administrators, coaches, television executives, NCAA staff, conference commissioners and post season football bowl directors, are asked to describe Dave Hart in one word, there is commonality in their responses. The words that are most used to best embody his sphere of influence nationally during his decorated career of nearly 35 years in college athletics administration are: Leader, Class, Respect, Visionary, Core Values and Presence." (link)

L.E.K. Consulting's Managing Directors Horan and Connerty pen for the Harvard Business Review: Good Strategy Execution Requires Balancing 4 Tensions. 1. An inspiring end-state versus challenging targets (painting the end picture is key, but "mid-state" targets are needed along the way); 2. Top-down control versus democratization of change ("When everyone in the organization feels empowered to make decisions that can influence change, it creates a palpable energy: People tend to work harder, offer more ideas, and become far more invested in the process."); 3. Capability development versus pressure for results (many strategies require changes to the way a company works and call for new capabilities to be developed, but that development is often hindered by deadlines for the strategy implementation); 4. Creativity versus discipline ("Creativity is part of any distinctive strategy" but "letting the creatives run free" can be a risk). (link)

Utah AD Hill says the next round of renovations to Rice-Eccles Stadium could include knocking down the south end zone to "figure out what's the right size for us." 2021 pointed to as a completion timeline. 100K surveys to be sent to fans in the near future to gauge interest in a variety of potential amenities. Hill: "This is the biggest project that we’ll take on in the next 20 years easy." (link)
Yahoo's Thamel writes on the power of the turnover chain after Miami (FL)'s primetime win over Notre Dame. Hurricanes AD James on the chain, "Embraced isn’t even the word. It’s a phenomenon. How does this happen?" (Note: James' wife has taken to making homemade turnover chains). Fighting Irish boss Swarbrick on the atmosphere in Hard Rock Stadium, "With all programs that are down for a while, when you come back, there’s a pent-up enthusiasm and desire. You could feel that as this year has progressed for them. It’s just building. It’s a different deal. It’s a unique vibe." (link); Quote of the day came from Canes quarterback Rosier, "They used to call us convicts, but we’re like first in the country in community service. I don’t think convicts do that — willingly at least." (link)
One of the biggest winners yesterday, at least at the bank, was Kentucky FB HC Stoops who earned an automatic one-year contract extension & a $250K bonus as the Wildcats won their seventh game of the year. Annual salary marks: $3.75M this season, $4M in '18, $4.25M in '19, $4.5M in '20, $4.75M in '21 & $5M in '22. Wildcats AD Barnhart: "As you’ve seen in the world of college athletics, it’s really easy to have instability. We’ve got a lot of it going on. The tenures of coaches, athletic directors, everyone is getting shorter and shorter. And so to be able to show continuity and strength. Mark is one of the most tenured coaches in our league with five years right now. That’s interesting to me. It just means that it’s really difficult to hang in there." (link)
USA Today's Berkowitz keeps us informed of others around the industry who stacked bonus monies yesterday with victories. On the AD side: Texas A&M's Woodward with $50K for bowl eligibility & Georgia State's Cobb $5K for the same accomplishment. As for HCs: UAB's Clark is up to $55K, TAMU's Sumlin with an equal $50K, North Texas boss Littrell up to $90K in total so far, Troy's Brown to $65K, Wisconsin's staff will divvy up at least $814K. (link)
Tennessee FB HC Jones says nothing has changed with support from Vols AD Currie as a defeat at Missouri went final last night. Looks forward to another opportunity for his team next weekend as LSU visits Knoxville. (link); Portland State AD Cleary indicates she has no plans to make a FB HC change despite the 0-10 ledger so far for the Vikings, adds that she hasn't looked through HC Barnum's contract a single time to understand the buyout terms, "That tells you how solid I am with him." (link)
Yahoo's Forde inks more on results from yesterday, says "everything has been thrown in the shredder" for last week's College FB Playoff rankings. Points to the ACC & Big Ten as the big conference winners last night, believes Auburn & Ohio State still have a chance despite two losses, "Dan Mullen is a very good coach," points to expected changes at Nebraska & Tennessee to join the search carousel alongside fellow blue blood Florida. (link)
Hellman: Extraordinary Lockers
As Florida A&M is set to conduct an AD search, many are calling for the permanent appointment of three-time Interim Prez Robinson. Last week the Board of Trustees received a waiver to forego the national search process and can hire a new leader immediately, with Robinson presumed to be the "clear front-funner" per Florida Times-Union's Mitchell. Board of Governors member Levine: "Why would you put the university through the uncertainty and the cost of doing a national search if you already have a guy who meets the profile and the board is generally satisfied with the work he’s done?" Robinson already has a contract through September 2018, but when the BoT meets at the end of this month it could be extended. (link)
Pac-12 Hotline's Wilner questions Commish Scott for "pointing a finger" at the UCLA MBB student-athletes still in China given their alleged shoplifting. "I’m not suggesting that was the intent. But how a comment is intended and how it is received can sometimes be half a world apart." Wilner also notes that FB squads having to travel for a Friday away game after playing on the previous Saturday are now 0-4 this season with headliner Washington the latest victim. Finally, the UW-Stanford first quarter on Friday night wasn't available on a major Seattle carrier, Comcast, as it doesn't carry FS2. (link)
AJC's Sugiura recaps Georgia Tech MBB's trip to China, including the sequence of events when local police interrogated Yellow Jackets student-athletes in connections to potential shoplifting. HC Pastner: "It was scary for those guys involved in it. It wasn’t fun whatsoever." Standout student-athlete Lammers: "Honestly, the guys just kind of look at it and laugh at it. It’s one of those things that, it’s scary in the moment, but it turned out OK." Others note the bartering culture of retail sales in China & the overall value of the international trip. (link)
ESPN's Nix on her alma mater Wofford's new Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium, which opened Friday as  MBB hosted South Carolina, "I’m blown away. To have a facility like this at a campus this size, it’s unprecedented. It’s so exciting. In all fairness, you can have bigger and you have grander, but I don’t think you can have better anywhere in the country." The multi-purpose 123K square foot facility holds 3,400 for basketball games, 350 for volleyball and 4,400 for speakers and concerts. Club seats, four video boards and several LED ribbon boards are among the amenities. More solid photos & videos from the new digs. (link)
Also Noticed: ESPN's Strong chronicled Utah Valley State's MBB double at Kentucky on Friday night & Duke last night. First time ever for the program to board a charter flight. Outgoing Prez Holland actually gave the team a pep talk during halftime of the tilt in Lexington as the Wolverines led by nine, but it looks like that video has been removed. (link, link); What are the penalties in college athletics for allowing a student-athlete back into the game against concussion protocol? In the NFL it could be $150K. (link); Villanova celebrated new Track & Field locker rooms. (link); Arizona FB's home finale drew 40,984, overall average this season was 42,632, lowest since 1997. (link); Maybe the Clemson-NC State laptop tiff isn't over. (link); Columbia FB defeated Cornell 18-8. How odd is that score? It hasn't happened in Division I play in the last 17 years & its never been a final in the NFL. (link)
Correction: Temple Executive Senior Assoc. AD/SWA McElroy did not enlist in the Marines as we noted yesterday. As a Navy grad she was commissioned as an officer.
