SB Nation has gotten its hands on a response NCAA Prez Emmert sent to Oregon Congresswoman Bonamici after she called for more effective diversity hiring measures at member institutions. Emmert: "As you certainly can appreciate, the NCAA has never had any jurisdiction or authority with respect to a member school's personnel decisions (i.e., hiring, discipline, firing), even within an athletic department. Each college or university operates independently using its own human resources policies, state legislative requirements, and local ordinances to determine their campus-wide personnel decisions, including athletic department personnel within that institution. Even when an employee at one of our member schools has been found to have violated NCAA rules through the infractions process, none of the penalties imposed by the NCAA would suggest termination of employment. Additionally, the NCAA cannot make hiring decisions on behalf of member schools; nor could it mandate who is interviewed for available positions. Universities and colleges retain their autonomy and authority in this regard." Emmert went on to outline the steps the NCAA has taken to aid members in the process of hiring more diverse leaders, "We will continue to provide strategic educational resources to our members who have decision-making authority to insert the principles of equity and inclusion in the talent management life cycle." Full letter included at the bottom. (link)
As you know, Tennessee AD Curried announced the Volunteers have parted ways with FB HC Jones. Here's the letter Currie submitted to Jones. Includes liquidated damages of $8.257M paid monthly until February of 2021, though it looks to be subject to mitigation. I believe Currie said during the presser the total obligation for UT is in the $13M range when also factoring in ACs. (link); When asked if he would use a search firm, "I've not at this time." (Interesting response). Additionally, Currie says his responsibility is to "conduct the process as efficiently and as effectively as possible." Won't be making any public comments until the hire is done. (link); Here's the full presser. (link)
George Washington has asked for the dismissal of the gender discrimination lawsuit brought by a former Executive Asst. to the AD who claims she was paid $40K less than a male counterpart hired for a similar role. The university's stance, "There is nothing in the Complaint – other than conclusory allegations that this Court must disregard at the motion-to-dismiss stage – that remotely suggests that any of the University’s conduct towards Williams had anything to do with discrimination based on sex." Toledo law professor Porter expects GW to file a another motion even if this one is denied, thinks a settlement is likely, "A tiny fraction of employment discrimination cases actually go to trial." No comment from Colonials AD Nero. (link)
ESPN's Fraschilla pens on, "A coach's view of the complicated college basketball landscape." Fraschilla goes in on his own "opus" of sorts, suggests the removal of one-and-done for a system of NBA scouts evaluating high school student-athletes & applying likely draft ranges to aid the decisions of parents. Points to challenges with the current recruiting calendar that necessitate coaches being on the road at the same time as incoming student-athletes getting acclimated to their new surroundings. Argues for a switch to eight hours of any type of activity with student-athletes during down periods, also thinks this could cut down on transfers. Finally, wonders if paid travel for student-athletes to go home & for parents to watch their sons could be part of the pay for play debate, plus changes to the national letter of intent if a HC transition occurs. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Texas Tech AD Hocutt commented on “exploratory conversations” the Red Raiders have had with the Texas Rangers about the possibility of playing FB in the Rangers’ new $1.1B Globe Life Field after it opens in 2020 and also addressed his willingness to continue playing Baylor in FB at the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium in Arlington when the current four-year contract runs out. Hocutt: “All that being said, (Tech-Baylor at AT&T Stadium) has been a great neutral-site game for Texas Tech. Our fan base here is tremendous. I was appreciative of our attendance (Saturday) from our fans, and you heard the (players) talk about how special it is to play in this stadium. This is the best football stadium in the country, and the opportunity to come in here is just a great experience for the team as well as for our fans.” (link)

Of note in the proposed Senate tax changes includes "royalties generated from a university's name or logo, income that is currently exempt." The Joint Committee on Taxation projected the change could generate $2B over the next 10 years for the federal government. Key from Inside Higher Ed: "The tax on royalties from licensing will have a larger impact at those colleges with large athletic programs and big alumni networks. But it will affect all universities that license their name or logo to third parties, including any trademark or copyright related to that name or logo." More. (link)
Boise State FB HC Harsin is another program leader who saw his contract automatically extended by a year with the Broncos' eighth win of the season. Overall value: $2.05M. (link); North Texas FB HC Littrell isn't the only one generating bonus monies with the successful season for the Mean Green. AD Baker is up to $14K thanks to FB's bowl eligibility, along with Conference USA titles for Volleyball & Women's Soccer, worth $2K each. Baker could stack another $10K if UNT wins the league FB title game. (link)
DePaul's new $170M Wintrust Arena opened Saturday as MBB hosted Notre Dame. AD Ponsetto: "On a lot of levels, I feel like we have turned a corner and given this program what it’s needed for a long time. We have given this program a chance to be good again." An in depth look, here, from The Athletic's Hamilton on the increased expectations of success for the Blue Demons with the new venue. HC Leitao: "We talked about it after the game: We’ve done a reasonably good job of trying to change the culture here, trying to put good people in places to do good things, but the most difficult part of the job is yet to come." (link)
Speaking of sparkly new facilities, NJIT unveiled its $110M Wellness and Events Center on Friday. With a capacity of 4K, the 220K square foot, three-story venue will house athletics, provide club and event space and serve as a conference center for the city. All part of a $400M facilities overhaul for the university. Mayor Baraka: "This is not only an opportunity for the school, it's an opportunity for the city. This center here will represent so much for many people in this community." Article includes a photo gallery. (link)
CFP TV Ratings: Auburn-Georgia won the weekend with a 4.7, Alabama-Mississippi State tops on cable at a 3.8. (link, link); ESPN College GameDay from Miami (FL)'s campus produced the show's top mark of the season thus far with a 1.5. (link); Overall context from Pro FB Talk Managing Editor Smith: "I feel like people don't realize how popular college football is because there are so many games on at once. Not many sports could get a 4.5 for one game, a 3.8 for another game on simultaneously, plus whatever Oklahoma-TCU got, whatever was on all the other cable channels, etc." (link)
A trio of A.T. Kearney staffers, Chevreux, Lopez and Mesnard, explain for Harvard Business Review that The Best Companies Know How to Balance Strategy and Purpose. "To safeguard your company at the level of purpose, you must make strategy the servant rather than the master. Strategies are time-bound and target specific results. Your purpose, in contrast, is what makes you durably relevant to the world. Strategy is but one of several important means to operationalize your purpose. Intrinsic human connection to your purpose is even more important." Here is how to operationalize your purpose: 1. Know you purpose; 2. Aim for the golden meal (the "desirable middle between the extremes of excess and deficiency"); 3. Develop corporate plasticity (defined as "the ability to collaborate in the pursuit of a common objective and rapidly reconfigure to face new challenges"); and, 4. Actively lead operationalization ("be the principal architect of a master plan to engage and align your organization"). (link)
Hellman: Extraordinary Lockers
Totally slipped on including the intro presser for new Drake AD Hardin late last week in advance of his December 11 official start date. Here were the highlights: "The elephant in the room is going to be men’s basketball; we need to get that going. We will win in men’s basketball and we will win with Niko’s plan. He’s the right man for the job. […] Des Moines is the No. 1 minor-league sports city in America, according to Sport Business Journal, there’s a lot of options, there’s a lot of competition. From a university standpoint, Iowa and Iowa State are doing great things. But I think there’s an opportunity that exists for us to create our own unique niche within the marketplace here. That's what I want to expand. […] I think Des Moines residents support Drake. We just need to give them a reason to re-engage." (link)
Belmont AD Corley & Florida Gulf Coast's Kavanagh discuss how their departments & institutions have piggy-backed MBB success. For the Eagles, Kavanagh notes the attention a run to the Sweet 16 brought for the entire university & how recruits now "know who we are." While the Bruins have long been a winner under HC Byrd, Corley provides context on creating the right framework, "It’s why we love sports; there’s a winner, there’s a loser, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t doing all the right things to give your programs the opportunity to be successful." More. (link)
Coming off a season that featured a MWC Championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament, Nevada MBB has sold nearly 1K more new season tickets, its largest jump in more than a decade, and its 97% renewal rate is the highest in school history despite an increase in ticket prices. The Wolf Pack have added 1,824 season-ticket holders since HC Musselman was hired in March of 2015. And it isn’t just the winning that has helped fill the Lawlor Events Center once again, it’s Musselman’s hands-on approach to marketing, which includes fun posts on social media, incorporating different uniform combinations, and arriving to games early to greet students and supporters. Student-athlete Drew: "Everything he said while recruiting me has happened so far. He said he wanted to get better each year, he wanted to make a run in the (NCAA) Tournament while I was here, talked about how the gym wasn’t packed, Lawlor wasn’t packed, but he said if we win more games, more people will start supporting the team, and that’s happened." Eighteen years of Mike & Mike in the Morning comes to an end this week. Cynopsis Sports caught up with SVP of ESPN Audio and the ESPN Talent Office Keller to discuss what comes next. I found this part most interesting, "In the audio business, we’ve seen a lot of new elements. First it was streaming, then it was SiriusXM, Apple Radio, TuneIn and now podcasting has become a bigger and bigger thing. I think podcasting is actually a misnomer as it is really audio-on-demand and an opportunity to be in even more ears. We love it every time there is a new way to listen. The latest is the smart speakers hitting people’s homes. If you’ve got Alexa and ask it to play ESPN or give you an update, you can do that and the great thing about them is that it is actually putting radio back in the home." (link)
Quite the drama in the NFL as Commish Goodell is pushing for a contract extension that could come with annual pay of $50M, plus the lifetime use of a private jet. On the other side of the debate is the league's most visible owner, Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys. SI's King goes behind the issue as Jones prepares to bring legal action against the Compensation Committee, a group he was previously a part of before going rouge. Jones has a history of bucking the system, including when he rallied against the league for TV rights, which launched FOX's NFL presence. (link); One option for NFL owners in dealing with Jones could be a vote that would require Jones to forfeit his franchise. Talk about a legal nightmare. (link)
Also Noticed: Norfolk State picks alum, Board of Visitors member and Vice Rector Stith to serve as Interim Prez (link); News 4 Tucson is reporting that Arizona MBB AC Phelps and student-athlete Pinder were suspended for Friday night's season-opener against Northern Arizona because Phelps bought a plane ticket for Pinder. Phelps won't return to the sidelines until Wednesday, as his punishment included five days without pay, but Pinder rejoined the team yesterday. (link); ESPN's Greenberg and CBSSports' Parrish agree that college football is a superior product to the NFL. Greenberg: "College football presents a far more compelling product than the NFL right now. It just does." Parrish: "College football seems awesome every Saturday. And the NFL is just... whatever." North Texas is surging thanks to the leadership of AD Wren Baker, his staff & a number of Mean Green HCs. How will the competitive success lead to revenue gains? Baker discussed donor strategies with 1.Q co-host Tai Brown at this past summer's NACDA Convention. Baker: "In my mind, a time will come when your annual fund guy may be the highest-paid guy on your staff." Listen by clicking the link. (link - 3:16)
