Hello again!

Welcome to the fourth SEC Newsletter of 2017 which is focused on the upcoming National SEC Event. Hard to believe but it is almost a year since our first major SEC event in Longford last November! Since then there has been significant progress in the development of the SEC Communities Programme and we are looking forward to sharing these updates with you.

News

SEAI SEC National Event
This year’s event will take place in Athlone on the 25th November 2017 and we really hope that your group will be able to attend. In line with your feedback from the last event the event is taking place on a Saturday again and the location has been specifically chosen to suit people coming from all areas of the country. Full details are included below.

SEAI Energy Award — Community Category
A big congratulations to Energy Communities Tipperary Co-operative who are this year’s winner of the SEAI Community Award.

Energy Communities Tipperary Co-operative CLG brings twelve communities in Tipperary together in a co-operative to carry out deep retrofits on homes. The aim of the project was to save energy, save money, create warm homes and generate jobs. Their action has resulted home owners benefitting from higher levels of comfort, with €4 million generated in energy cost savings to date. Their project brings together rural communities with diverse backgrounds and needs, and focuses on what can actively be done to mitigate climate change one step at a time. This approach could easily be adopted by other rural communities.

Important Dates for Funding
  • The Better Energy Communities (BEC) Programme 2018 is launching on November 23rd. For anyone interested in this programme we will have a special presentation from the BEC Programme Team at our National SEC Event in Athlone on the 25th of November so there is no need to attend both events. We will also have a number of people who have led BEC Projects in the past for you to speak with and to ask questions of.
  • Social Innovation Fund Ireland have launched a Resilient Communities Fund, and after the battering winds and rain of Storms Ophelia and Brian we know that funds are badly needed in many of our communities. Community Resilience is a measure of the sustained ability of a community to respond to economic, social and environmental issues. This fund is open to any projects that improve the resilience of their community and consists of a €400,000 awards fund that will be given out in awards from €40k to €100k. Applications from SEAI’s Sustainable Energy Communities are strongly encouraged – the fund is open for applications until 31st January 2018. Click here for a link to the application form.
