USA Today's Berkowitz keeps us updated on student-athlete compensation court cases, indicates plaintiff attorneys are using comments by current industry leaders to make their points. "The most provocative portions of Tuesday night’s filing came in the plaintiffs’ attacks against the NCAA’s contentions that limits on compensation for athletes serve at least two critical functions: Maintaining a sense of amateurism that is important to fan interest in college sports and helping to promote the integration of academics and athletics. On the academic side, the plaintiffs repeatedly referenced the NCAA Committee on Infractions’ decision last month to hand North Carolina little punishment for a long-running academic scandal, citing NCAA rules that basically leave the determination of what constitutes academic fraud to the schools and the accreditors." North Carolina MBB HC Williams, NCAA Prez Emmert, Ohio State FB HC Meyer, Washington FB boss Petersen, Pac-12 Commish Scott, others all sourced as part of the plaintiff arguments. (link)
Newschannel 9 in El Paso reports Northern Arizona AD Campos, The Citadel boss Senter & Miners Senior Assoc. AD for Development & External Operations Park are the final three candidates for the open AD chair at UTEP. "The interview process is expected to begin on Monday, November 13, and many expect the new athletic director to be named by the end of November." (link)
The Fresno Bee's Warszawski goes in on the exit of former Fresno State AD Bartko, as well as where the Bulldogs go next. Bartko's pending divorce & battle with alcohol are part of the story. Warszawski calls the AD job "brutally difficult," "That person has to sustain 21 varsity sports, third most in the Mountain West, on a $37.8 million budget that ranks in the lower half. And do it at a time of flat ticket sales for football (despite the recent on-field turnaround) and declining interest from an aging fan base." In terms of how Prez Castro may proceed, "Fresno State won’t be pressed to conduct this job search. Castro will take his time finding the right fit." (link)
No changes to the Top 4 of the CFP standings (Georgia, Alabama, Notre Dame, Clemson), though there were a couple of moves further down the line with Miami (FL) making a strong jump from #10 to #7 after its convincing win over Virginia Tech last weekend. Scroll down for the full Top 25. (link); Watch: CFP chair & Texas Tech AD Hocutt was back on ESPN as the standings were announced, says the difference between Georgia & Alabama at the top is the win at Notre Dame for the Bulldogs. Further, Hocutt dodges, dips, dives & ducks on committing to an unbeaten squad having to make the semifinals. More. (link)
Three UCLA MBB student-athletes were arrested yesterday in China after allegedly shoplifting from a Louis Vuitton store. Statement from the Pac-12 & Commish Scott: "Yesterday in Hangzhou, China, UCLA student-athletes were involved in a situation, and UCLA is cooperating fully with local authorities. We are directing all inquiries about the specifics of this matter to UCLA. We are very disappointed by any situation that detracts from the positive student-athlete educational and cultural experience that this week is about. Whether in the United States or abroad, we expect our student-athletes to uphold the highest standards. We will continue to closely monitor the situation." (link); Sports Illustrated legal expert McCann writes on the challenges of getting out of Chinese jail & appropriate legal representation. From the 'Handbook of Chinese Criminology', "almost all [convicted defendants] receive prison sentences." McCann says the US State Department only has limited powers to assist, though China's growing interest in the sport of basketball, as well as the Ball Family, may be helpful in freeing the players quickly. (link)
More drama around the UCLA-Georgia Tech MBB match-up in Shanghai later came by way of CBSSports.com's Parrish as he talked to a former close friend of Yellow Jackets HC Pastner, who claims he provided a multitude of impermissible benefits to current & prospective Tech student-athletes. Plane tickets, shoes, clothes, groceries, lodging, meals & more are central to the allegations. Of particular note after Pastner & Ron Bell had a falling out, Bell, "And basically what [Pastner] told me is, 'Nobody is going to believe you because you were in prison, and I've never been to prison, and I have a great reputation, and I don't cheat.' And I said, 'You don't cheat?' Yes, you do. Yes, you do.'" Lots more. (link); Here's a radio interview Parrish conducted later in the day with Bell. (link)
Eight individuals, including four MBB ACs, were indicted yesterday in connection to the ongoing FBI developments within the sport. Attorneys for all the ACs say either their client is innocent, or that laws have been significantly stretched to find wrongdoing. (link); As a result of yesterday's moves, Auburn officially parted ways with AC Person. (link); Yahoo's Wetzel: "Munish Sood, New Jersey financial planner originally charged in college basketball fraud case, is not expected be indicted this week. Suggests possible cooperation with authorities." (link); SI's McCann: "The college basketball criminal cases will take months, if not years, to play out--especially if some of those 'in the know' agree to cooperate with the FBI and share info about others in order to save themselves." (link)
Yahoo's Forde: "College basketball in state of emergency before season even starts." Michigan State HC Izzo believes signing day will be "much cleaner," also, "We’ve got people saying, 'Let’s not put a black eye on the profession.' But there is a black eye, guys. Wake up." Forde points to the news yesterday from China in connection to both UCLA & Georgia Tech, along with the already-simmering FBI news, "on the eve of a new season, you look at the headlines and realize that there is no reason to wonder why the sport is off the rails." (link)
It's Personnel: New Fairfield boss Schlickmann adds Sacred Heart Executive Director for University Advancement & Campaign Management Wormley as Senior Assoc. AD/Executive Director of Athletic Development for the Stags. (link); Looks like Mississippi State AD Cohen has a new Assoc. AD for Development in Rob Jenkins, who was previously raising money for the business school in Starkville. (link); ESPN's Aschoff & Schlabach write on the back story between the Florida administration & former FB HC McElwain. Part of the story is the continued influence of AD Emeritus Foley & his head butting with McElwain even from the earlier days of his tenure in Gainesville. Context from an unnamed UF source, "It was never the right fit. It was an odd fit from the beginning." More. (link)

Shift Thinking founder Bonchek pens for HBR: Is Execution Where Good Strategies Go to Die? Bonchek says it isn't what you think, but how you think that determines if execution turns out to be the "carrying out of a plan or course of action" or "the carrying out of a death sentence." To close this "strategy-execution gap," leaders must 1) Recognize that the thinking styles of those who develop the strategy (big-picture orientation) and those that execute the strategy (detail orientation) are different and that it takes both styles of thinking to turn a vision into a reality. 2) The "Ikea effect" - Involve stakeholders earlier, it gives them a sense of ownership and diversity may improve the quality of the strategy overall. 3) The narrative around the strategy is key, especially between the sales and marketing teams. 4) There is a difference between measurement and metrics, don't let the former be an afterthought in strategy development. The Gateway's Sports Editor Koch commends Nebraska Omaha AD Alberts for his loyalty, particularly to his current role after Alberts withdrew his name from the AD search at Nebraska last month citing unfinished business with the Mavs. Alberts on the move to cut Football and Wrestling a few years back: "I know there are people that will never come back, but we challenged ourselves with making decisions that were in the best interest of UNO athletics, UNO as an institution and the community as a whole. It was the hard thing to do but it was the right thing to do." Since then, other sports have flourished and the "brand" is sticking. Since 2013, royalty payments from jerseys and apparel have doubled, 450K fans came through Baxter Arena's turnstyles for some 125 events last year alone. Alberts: "Whether on the football field or in life, Coach Osborne always drilled into our heads to be finishers. He wanted us to finish every play on the field and be finishers in education off the field. I watched Coach Osborne in the most difficult of times stand in front of the team and take the heat. And when things were going really well, I watched him stand in the back and deflect the praise to other people. Champions are finishers. Coach [Osborne] motivated me to be a finisher." More. (link)
Debate at Illinois centers around the financial model for the Fighting Illini as former AD Guenther is receiving upwards of $500K from the state pension and university professor & documentary filmmaker Rosenstein continues to dig in on his "The Multi Million Dollar Head Fake" story. The Guenther situation is back in the spotlight as the state goes through tough economic times in its support of higher education & some student fees go toward the support of athletics. Rosenstein argues salary enhancements for HCs & other athletics leaders have historically been paid for by the public, though Illini brass point out only three individuals in the Top 500 paid state retirees are former athletics staffers. More. (link)
HC Updates: Texas A&M FB HC Sumlin says he hasn't met with Aggies AD Woodward yet, though it's common for the pair to get together later in the week. (link); Nebraska AD Moos indicates no decision has been made yet on the future of FB HC Riley. (link); Longtime & highly-successful UConn Women's Soccer HC Tsantiris will retire after 37 years leading the Huskies. (link); Portland Women's Soccer HC Smith won't return to lead the Pilots. (link); Louisville is still paying for legal representation of former WLax HC Young in connection to claims of student-athlete mistreatment. (link); UConn FB HC Edsall is expected to push for a court order that would allow his son & tight ends coach to remain on his staff. (link); Syracuse MBB HC Boeheim has no plans to step away from the Orange, especially with former AHC Hopkins exiting to take over at Washington. Could become the oldest MBB HC in history in a couple of years. (link)
AL.com's Cassagrande explains "what happens behind the scenes when an Alabama football player gets hurt" as several did against LSU this past weekend. Dir. of Sports Medicine/Head FB Trainer Allen says there are 10 sets of eyes watching players, not including the three orthopedic surgeons, three primary care physicians, a neurosurgeon, two paramedics and a dentist that stand on the sidelines every game. The now-famous sideline tent is the first stop for most injured players, which Allen says is key in expediting the evaluation process. He doesn't believe there are more injuries now than 15-20 years ago, just that the awareness of them has increased and that athletes no longer have the "suck it up" and play through it mindset. Lots more not unique to the Tide, but how do these figures compare to yours? Alabama spent $3.16M on medical costs in 2016, $1.59M of that on FB student-athletes. (link)
UNC Asheville FAR Wilcox indicates the Big South is working on student-athlete transfer legislation. "This is a big issue for our conference because there’s at least a feeling that some of our student athletes are getting poached by larger schools that maybe don’t want to take a chance on somebody or somebody that needs a little bit of development and we’re doing the development here and then losing them. So that’s an issue." Further, "It's really, why do people choose colleges in the first place? Why do student athletes choose it? Do they choose it just for the cross country team, or do they choose it for the coaches, or do they choose it because Asheville is a nice place to live? Or do they choose it because it’s a small liberal arts school and I really want a liberal arts degree? I’m sure it’s all of the above." (link)
Baseball America's Cahill wonders if the age at which high school baseball players are committing to colleges is getting too early. This year's top 50 HS players committed an average of nine months sooner than the class just three years ago, before sophomore seasons even began. TCU HC Schlossnagle: "I think it's ridiculous. The more competitive that college baseball becomes, the more money that's invested—which makes the fragility of jobs increased at the high end programs—that just pushes the envelope on everything. That doesn't make it right—it just is what it is." Ole Miss HC Bianco: "When we got into (coaching), we were recruiting one class. Now, we're recruiting four. It hasn't bettered the sport. The same kids will end up at school, we're just competing to get them faster." The ABCA and 16 coaches will meet in December to discuss potential rule changes on early recruiting. (link)
Hellman: Extraordinary Lockers
Win AD hosted a Google Hangout yesterday with North Texas Executive Senior Assoc. AD for External Operations Peck & Mercer Senior Assoc. AD/Executive Director of the Mercer Athletic Foundation Gerrity with the title of "A Road Map for Record-Breaking Fundraising." Lots here in a 50+ minute conversation, including Peck's on-going initiative to "make it easier on our donors" to transact, give & connect with the Mean Green given technological advances & expectations of speed in doing business. Gerrity covers strategies for mid-majors who may be in the backyards of large state institutions & how to effectively position branding & fundraising campaigns. (link)
What goes into the decision of wearing an alternate uniform, especially one that leverages a state's identity & must be planned so far in advance? Colorado State is a good case study as Rams AD Parker notes, "It was tough because you never know what the public response is going to be. When you're in these roles, you're going to be looked at, fingers are going to point in a certain direction, and you've got to be willing to take that risk." Parker indicates reaction to the "State Pride" look FB will wear this weekend against Boise State received some negative push back, but nothing his department hadn't already identified as a possibility. Under Armour Design Director for Team Sports Billiris points to the "arms race" of unique unis across the nation, but thinks this one was different because of the starting story. (link)
Interesting read from the Courier Journal's Greer on how Louisville MBB student-athletes learned about & immediately reacted to the latest loop impacting the Cardinals program & the exit of former HC Pitino. Redshirt freshman student-athlete McMahon: "Everything is going through your head in that moment. Are we even going to have a team? (The NCAA's death penalty) was being thrown around. Like, we're going to have to transfer, leave my friends, leave my coaches, leave my peers, leave my girlfriend ... during times like that, you reach out to your parents. You reach out to the people who look after you. You search for answers. It's scary when those people don't have answers because nobody knows what to do in that situation." Big man Mahmoud recounts emailing Interim Prez Postel & asking for an audience. McMahon kids that the media did a great job of keeping the rest of the team in the loop with developments as their teammates met with Postel & cameras flashed. (link)
Dallas Mavericks owner Cuban continues to question the future of the NFL, not because of the TV ratings situation, but because of a decline in participation in connection to hear injury fears. "That's huge. That impacts how much football kids will watch. And how much football families watch. You just get the sense that they don't really have a grasp of how to connect to people in the broader population." Further, Cuban suggests all four of major pro leagues band together to address digital consumption trends & wonders if clubs could be pricing fans out of the market with high ticket/seat license requirements. Mentions innovator's dilemma a number of times. (link)
SBD with an excellent mashup of reporting on the potential Disney-Fox deal & while sports assets apparently weren't part of the talks, here's why it's still important for our space. MoffettNathanson's namesake co-founder on Squawk Box, "...the worry is Fox as a company becomes so small that with the next NFL deals, they will be outbid by someone bigger. What everyone in our world is worrying about is that the next NFL deal will be a lot more money. For those that have the NFL now, it is the most important piece of programming, so the risk would be the next set of negotiations should drive up prices, and if you’re smaller, it's going to cost you a lot more on earnings than it would if you were bigger." (link)
Also Noticed: Utah Valley Prez Holland exiting after nine years leading the institution. (link); Cal State Fullerton Prez Garcia doing the same after six. (link); The Big Ten inks a deal with Discover for Official Credit Card designation & presenting rights of the FB Championship Game. (link); Saint Peter's partners with Adidas through 2023-24. No financial details provides. (link); Twitter moves to 280 characters. Blah. (link); Last Saturday's LSU-Alabama tilt on CBS did a 3.7 to win the weekend, but it was the lowest rating for the matchup since 2006. (link); Arizona partners with RISE & Wildcats WBB will be the first to play a Unity Game. (link); Snapchat continues to falter on Wall Street with less than expected Q3 results. (link)
With The Citadel AD Jim Senter apparently in the mix at UTEP, here are two previous 1.Qs of interest as Senter discussed challenges of hiring the right HCs to fit an institution (link - 7:23), as well as the differences in AD leadership & fundraising at public vs. private institutions (link - 3:40).
