Recruitment
Recruitment
The Office of Diversity and Inclusion just finished attending a series of conferences - the Big Ten Expo+, the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) and Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Student (ABRCMS).  This summer, OGDI also attended the Institute for the Recruitment of Teachers (IRT) conference which focuses largely on underrepresented students in the humanities and social sciences.

OGDI will be sending a list of interested students to graduate programs within the next week or so. This list will include students who showed particular interested in Maryland at the Big Ten, SACNAS or ABRCMS. We urge all applicable programs to reach out to these students directly - ideally through faculty program directors.  Recruiting diverse students is highly competitive, and hearing from faculty members in a timely manner is the most compelling welcome we can muster as a community.  If you have any questions or need sample communications go to the Toolkit (password: hobsons20!4*): http://blog.umd.edu/toolkit/recruitment-diversity/sample-communications/  or contact Anna De Cheke Qualls (adechek1@umd.edu).

Admissions for applicants from Puerto Rico
The Graduate School urges all programs to extend deadlines for Puerto Rican applicants.  Many people if not most still do not have power.  In recent conferences attended by the GS, many Puerto Rican students asked about deadlines and were concerned about having to meet them.

Academic and Professional Development

ImaginePhD, the free, online career exploration and planning tool specifically developed for Ph.D. students and postdoctoral scholars in the humanities and social sciences is publicly available.  Please encourage students at all stages of study to use Imagine PhD  to explore 16 distinct job families and the skills and the preparation required for each. Students can use the tool's planning feature to map out an Individual Development Plan (IDP) for completing key academic and professional development goals.  ImaginePhD enables students to be more knowledgeable about career possibilities for PhDs, increasingly responsible for their own career development and more on track to meet crucial program milestones. To discuss possible ways that ImaginePhD could be incorporated at different stages of your students' doctoral experience,  please contact  Dr. Susan Martin, smarti18@umd.edu

Teaching and Learning
Winter Orientation and Teaching Portfolio Retreat for Graduate Students
If you have any graduate students who were unable to attend the Fall Graduate Student Teaching Orientation in August or who may be teaching for the first time in the spring semester, consider encouraging them to attend the TLTC’s Winter Graduate Student Teaching Orientation.  This year, the orientation will be held on Monday, January 22, 2018.  More details are available at tltc.umd.edu/teaching-orientations.

Graduate students who are nearing the end of their graduate career and are considering applying for academic positions are encouraged to attend the January Teaching Portfolio Retreat for Graduate Students.  This three-day retreat is an excellent opportunity for graduate students to learn about the components of the teaching portfolio, start to compile their materials, and to receive feedback.  This year, the retreat will be held from January 16-18, 2018.

University Teaching & Learning Program (UTLP)
The TLTC, in collaboration with The Graduate School, offers this professional development program on teaching and learning in higher education for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Aligning with the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL) goals, the UTLP is a self-paced program that provides formal training at three levels: Associate, Practitioner, and Scholar. Encourage your graduate students to visit tltc.umd.edu/utlp for more information about the program and to enroll.

Teaching Resources for Graduate Students
The TLTC has compiled a list of campus resources that can help support your graduate students.  The list includes resources to support and improve their teaching, help support their own students or mentees, or to support themselves as graduate students.  In addition to these compiled resources, make sure that your graduate students and post-docs are aware of the resources and programs available to support their teaching and professional development by asking them to subscribe to the TLTC's weekly newsletter.  Visit tltc.umd.edu/newsletter to sign up.
Graduate Policy Updates
Incomplete (“I”) grading policy – The updated policy re-assigning an “I” as a course grade for all graduate level courses (excluding 799 and 899) will be effective for all courses starting in the Fall 2017 term. Faculty will need to provide a date in which the work is to be completed (either one-year from the end of the term or by date of graduation, whichever is earliest) and the letter grade to be assigned if not completed by that date. Students interested in taking a course but not intending to get a course grade should “audit” the course.

Remote participation in dissertation defense – candidates and committee members need to keep in mind that if the remote connection fails at any time during the defense, the Dean’s Representative will deem the defense as failed and will need to be rescheduled. It is important also that the remote participant is visible to the committee and the candidate.
