Fellow Dog Breeders!
Be proud of what you bring into this world, and protect it like no other. And remember to always try and be caught in the practice of excellence.
The sport of purebred dogs flourished in past decades because clear paths of success existed for breeders in this country. We even enjoy many of our breeds to be considered the best in the world.
Breeding is still popular in many, if not most other parts of the world.
(The world dog show has over 30,000 entries this year and they are experiencing growth today.)
You cannot stimulate growth within a vocation when it's stifled as we are exponentially witnessing occur in many parts of the states.
If we don't advocate for growth and interest in the vocation of breeding dogs within our sport there will soon be none. I implore each of you who seek success within this sport at any level of participation, too contribute to the success and make most important the plight of responsible preservation breeding and animal welfare. Do it today, there may not be a tomorrow!
Be proud of what you bring into this world, and protect it like no other. And always try and be caught in the practice of excellence.
And remember lawmakers don't take into consideration if your group considers you a responsible breeder or not, they simply make legislation for breeders.
This battle will never be won alone. We are too small a group individually. And we already do a good job of dividing ourselves, and conquering our own best interest.

Guard Dog Wouldn’t Leave Goat Flock During the California Fires—And Lived to Tell the Story
Flames erupted on Mark West Springs Road in Santa Rosa and tendrils of fire burst from cars as Roland Hendel and his daughter, Ariel, fled their home the night of Sunday, Oct. 8, during the Tubbs wildfire.
They were forced to leave behind Odin, one of their two Great Pyrenees livestock guardian dogs, who refused to abandon their flock of eight goats. The fire the Hendels barely escaped was part of the Northern California firestorm that has so far claimed 40 lives—including one of their neighbors, Lynne Powell—destroyed countless homes, and caused billions of dollars in damage.
“Later that morning when we had outrun the fires I cried, sure that I had sentenced Odin to death, along with our precious family of bottle-raised goats.” Odin, named after the Norse God, was known for his fierce loyalty to his flock, over which he shared guarding duty with his sister, Tessa (who was taken to safety with the family). According to his master, it was nearly impossible to separate him from the goats, even in the best of circumstances. “I made a decision to leave him, and I doubt I could have made him come with us if I tried”.
Finally, on Oct. 10, after the fire subsided enough for the family to return to their home—they had to sneak in via a back road due to roadblocks that had been set up—they found the property in ruins, with trees still burning and an estimated million dollars worth of damage. They expected the worst in regard to Odin and the other animals. Suddenly the goats appeared (unscathed save for a minor small burn on one) and raced towards them, followed close behind by Odin, his fur singed, his whiskers melted, and hobbling along favoring his right side. Hendel couldn’t believe it, calling it a miracle. Even more amazing, Odin had adopted several baby deer who huddled around him for safety.
Odin was soon reunited with his sister. “He appears to be getting stronger, and his sister’s presence will surely help to lift his spirits and take some of the burden off his giant shoulders,” wrote Hendle, who had the siblings since puppies—this had been the first time ever the pair had spent even a day apart.
All the animals were eventually taken to a temporary shelter where they are now recovering from their ordeal. The animals are doing well, says Hendel. Odin is getting stronger and enjoying all the attention and spotlight, especially a special steak dinner he and his sister were treated to, along with a visit to a local dog groomer.

Behind the Scene
Name: Shannon Chapman
Where you live: Calgary, Alberta
Kennel name: Rugerlane Kennel
1) If you could have another breed, what would it be?
There are too many interesting & beautiful breeds to pick from, but right now I would love to have another Rottweiler or a Miniature Bull Terrier.
2) How many shows a month do you attend, and how many dogs do you normally take?
It depends on the month, but normally 2-3 shows and 4-5 dogs.
3) If you could only attend one "must do" show a year, what would it be?
I’m not sure it would be a “must do” but I would say Woofstock in Vallejo California. It has become my favorite show of the year, as they say it’s 4 days of peace, music and the love of Dogs” everyone should attend at least once, you won’t be disappointed.
4) Besides your dogs, do you have any other animals?
Only a five year old cat named Halo who believes she is a Bulldog.
5) Name something that is on your "life" bucket list to do?
I want to do an African Safari Tour
6) Would you like to see critiques at shows in North America?
I have not been in the dog show world that long, but from what I have read and heard from others the critique of one’s dog in the ring is a lost art in our sport. How many times have we asked ourselves, or our friends after leaving the ring, “I don’t understand, what was he/she was looking for, why that pick over mine”. Maybe having critiques would eliminate this grey area we have today always wondering what are the judges thinking.
I believe it would provide more accountability for their decisions and possibly bring about more education for judges in our breeds. As an exhibiter I think it would be great to receive a critique of our dog’s virtues and faults.
7) What is your favorite way to relax?
Actually dog shows for me are fun and relaxing, I have a full time career in the Oil & Gas Industry, so dog shows are a hobby and a way for me to step away from my day to day job, travel, enjoy my dogs and friends, second to this would be a beach somewhere tropical.
8) What is your current 5 - year plan in dogs?
I have always had my love for dogs starting with Rottweiler’s but only recently in Bulldogs when 5 years ago Kandie Kroonen (IROC Bulldogs) & Larry Clark introduced me to a little Bulldog named Tulane, who became my first Bulldog and provided me my first bred by boy Orion.
I guess this is when you could say the addiction started. I am slowly starting to grow my foundation in Bulldogs and hopefully within the next couple of years I will have my own litters at home, I’m in no rush, I still have so much to learn and have been told I could have picked an easier breed to learn, but I absolutely adore the Bulldogs and will continue down this path.
9) Do you do pet grooming, or pet boarding for dogs you have bred, and do you have a commercial pet grooming and boarding business?
I will on occasion board small dogs normally Bulldogs and French Bulldogs, or dogs staying with me for shows.
10) What breed or all breed clubs are you a member of?
I’m a member of the Canadian Kennel Club, Bulldog Club of America, Division 5 & the Bulldog Club of Canada (I’m one of two Directors for the Prairie Division).
