Dear Friends and Supporters,

As we wind down for the year, Wild Asia remains busy! Wild Asia is now running two parallel programmes in Palm Oil (Palm Oil Initiative) and in Sustainable Developments (Build For Tomorrow).  We continue to create affordable solutions to support businesses in their efforts to implement sustainability programmes; be it large corporations, SMEs or individual owners. Read on for some highlights of our work.

Palm Oil Initiative
POI aims to develop approaches and methods to support the production of sustainable palm oil.

1. Building Technical Capacity

We design and innovate new ways to deliver technical knowledge to practitioners on the ground. Public and in-house courses, including practical training by our technical and regional units.

What's New:
  • Going from theory to practice: our newly updated HCV Management and Monitoring Workshops are designed to help palm oil producers understand their local environment and draft action plans they can implement.
  • Our Wild Asia Academy has piloted a new method to deliver technical content. Two of our trials are educating small producers on understanding Chemical Management and Traceability. Both modules are based on our field experiences and lesson learnt from linking producers to the global palm oil market.

2. Support for Small Producers

We have designed approaches to support small producers in meeting global standards. These approaches are delivered through a global partnership with various organisations in the palm oil supply chain.

Wild Asia Group Scheme (WAGS) hits 1,100 members!

With a network of regional field sites across Malaysia, our field teams are working hard to reach out to small producers and build their capacity on sustainable practices. Our network now has hit over 1,000 producers. As WAGS members they can now proudly claim to have met basic sustainability requirements, such as not converting primary forests into oil palm plantations. Of these members, an impressive 80% are already RSPO certified!

  • "The benefits of being certified is a concept that is hard to explain to a smallholder who has been doing things his way for decades." Read on for the full interview with Wild Asia.
If you are a palm oil processor or trader and would like to certify your supply base, download this brochure to find out how.

3. Linking to Global Markets

We have been working to find ways to connect with the palm oil market and corporate brands that are committed to Zero Deforestation.
  • Our support for small producers will not be made possible without the network of global partnerships we have forged. These partnerships allow small producers we support to be linked to global markets. To learn more, visit our website
  • In December, Wild Asia is hosting a special Study Tour to highlight the challenges of small producers in Malaysia and the environment in which they operate. The Study Tour will be a good opportunity for our project partners to gain a better understanding of the issues on the ground.

More from Wild Asia

Reflecting on a Decade in Palm Oil (HOB 2017)

On 23rd October 2017, Wild Asia participated in the 9th International Heart of Borneo (HOB) conference in Sabah. Our very own director, Dr Reza Azmi, presented an insightful paper on "Approaches to Capacity Building in Palm Oil". The key takeaway message is that we can all support conservation efforts in our own scope of work and doing this in partnership with communities and businesses helps ensure long term sustenance of efforts. Read more on our paper here.

International Palm Oil Conference (PIPOC 2017)

Sheila Senathirajah was invited to be a guest speaker for the "Certified Sustainable Palm Oil: The Way Forward" Forum held on 14th - 16th November 2017  at PIPOC 2017 organised by Malaysia Palm Oil Certification Council. The presentation discussed issues and challenges in supporting small producers towards sustainable production. The feedback was positive particularly among the small to medium size growers who generally do not get much support to meet these requirements.

RSPO Roundtable (RSPO RT 2017)

Our team will be taking part in the 15th annual Roundtable event on 27th - 30th November 2017.  Apart from a good opportunity to reconnect with partners, Wild Asia will be involved with the RSPO Principles & Criteria Review which is conducted every 5 years.  We will also be actively engaging in discussions on smallholders and promoting inclusivity of small producers. We will also be participating on the Cluster 1 panel "Road to Improving Labour Practices" on 28th November 2017 at 9am.

That's all for now. Until next time, all the best for the rest of the year!
