I absolutely love this time of year...
the leaves smell so beautiful; on the ground crunching under your feet and today the sun shining...crisp and beautiful.
This time of year is also a beautiful time in our Industry as it is Harvest time in the Vineyards and a very special time of year as the grapes are picked and the wine is starting fermentation in the tanks for the start of release in Spring.
I also love this time of year for the style of wine we tend to drink in the Winter and the type of food we love to enjoy.
Rich, luscious Chardonnays coat our glass and our palate as we enjoy buttery mashed potatoes, casseroles and comfort foods.
Deep rich reds like Marechal Foch, Merlot and Cabernet Franc are winners at this time of year as they pair perfectly with your braised ribs, Prime Rib roast dinners and robust stews.
Today we are featuring excellent wines as we pour for you some of my Winter favorites starting with a perfectly lightly oaked Chardonnay from Poplar Grove Winery on the Naramata Bench, a stunning Rhone Valley blend from Church & State Winery, a rich Reserve Shiraz from Mission Hill Winery and one of my favorite reds in store and a brand new vintage with the Bartier Bros Cabernet Franc.
Tomorrow Jen will be featuring us on her new winery, Bordertown which has been wowing us every since they opened. She will be pouring a full line up for Remembrance Day starting with a Gewurztraminer and rare varietal that is not widely seen in BC, Gruner Veltliner.
Make sure you are aware that this tasting in respect of the holiday will be from 2-5pm.
Jen will also introduce a Cabernet Franc rose, and her big beautiful and bold reds!
A fantastic weekend to try some fantastic wines as we respect and remember the lives of those fallen to ensure peace in our Country today.
Cheers.

Mission Hill 2013 Reserve Shiraz
$31.99+taxes
Our 2013 Reserve Shiraz was grown in two of our estate vineyards. Osoyoos, the region’s most southern area, is comprised of arid benchlands that benefit from the lake’s effect providing the region with more than 200 frost-free days. This warm climate allows the grapes to completely ripen for full flavour. Black Sage Bench is a diverse vineyard with more than 60 different individual blocks affording us an amazing array of premium quality fruit.
The illustration on our label is an original architect sketch from Tom Kundig when he and Proprietor Anthony von Mandl were designing the winery. The renowned Bell Tower is the focal point surrounded by the hillside where our winery sits.
Our Reserve Shiraz is inky in colour with aromas of dark fruits, violet, and peppercorn. This vintage is full-bodied with flavours of Bing cherries, rosemary, anise, and brambleberry.Pair with meat dishes from grilled beef to rich lamb stew, roast duck and aged cheeses.
Bartier Bros. 2014 Cabernet Franc

NEW VINTAGE~BEST SELLER
Engaging and bright possessing black fruit and savoury aromas and flavours, grippy, yet luscious tannins, firm structure, a fresh herbaceousness and a lingering clean soft, lifted finish that begs another taste.
Only 429 cases produced. Unfined and Unfiltered, using Native Yeast Ferment.
“Winemaker Michael Bartier is a hands-off-let-the-site-do-the-talking kind of winemaker. The ’14 franc is all Cerqueira Vineyard located on the Black Sage Gravel Bar. The soils are dense loam topsoil above gravel with limestone (calcium carbonate) covered granite, quartz, and basalt cobbles throughout a deep profile. It was fermented with wild yeast and finished unfined and unfiltered. It was a warm year and the red and black is jammy albeit with a savoury, south Okanagan film. The grapes were harvested October 23 at 23.5 Brix. Maceration took place over 28 days in small open top stainless steel and concrete fermenters facing a combination of punch downs, pump overs and delestage. The fruit was pressed directly to barrels to complete fermentations and racked twice over the following 12 months. This one needs a bit of time in bottle or try now with roast pork or lamb.”-88pts Anthony Gismondi, Gismondi on Wine

Cabernet Franc has quickly established itself as a “go to” grape in the south Okanagan. Once known chiefly as a component grape for classic Bordeaux blends, it has now broken out on its own and is loved for its unique charms. These include deep expressive flavours of tobacco, dark spice, herbaceous green pepper, and a tiny hint of mint. All of this is achieved while maintaining supple tannins and dark berry flavours.
