This week, Vivendi is extending its own mobile-first SVoD service, Studio+, to the US – users will be able to stream original drama series in purpose-made 10 ten-minute chunks. Disney has reportedly been involved in discussions to acquire large parts of 21st Century Fox, while reports suggest that Amazon and Warner Bros. are both in talks about a Lord of the Rings TV series while Netflix has teamed up with Canadian musician Drake to reboot British TV series, Top Boy, in which Drake will take an Executive Producer credit.

In the UK, ITV is hoping to follow in the footsteps of US counterparts, which have persuaded TV operators pay to retransmit their free-to-air channels – ITV is threatening to remove its channels from Virgin Media unless it pays up to £80m per year. In Spain, operators are refusing to pay producer and rights management group Mediapro's suggested fee for sports rights, instead opting to wait in the hope that the prices will drop.

Communications group Sprint has received further investment from SoftBank following its failed merger talks with T-Mobile, and has partnered Altice to allow it to use Sprint's mobile network. In other merger news, AT&T has said it is unsure of when its acquisition of Time Warner will close, alongside reports that the company may be asked to sell news network CNN as a condition for the deal. Chinese media giant Tencent, which owns popular Chinese messaging app WeChat, has bought a 12% stake in Snapchat parent company, Snap Inc.
