When you feel like you are running a mile a minute, albeit sometimes on empty, it’s hard to think about adding something new to your life. But sometimes, that’s just what you need. 2017 has certainly been a year of closing chapters and starting new ones.
I started the year with transitioning my elderly mother from independent living to skilled care. It included moving her twice, cleaning out her home, and supporting her through yet another health crisis. My husband and I also dealt with a dog aggression issue that shocked us to the core.
Yet, interspersed among the turmoil was amazing dream-come-true travel. First to Hawaii, for a week in paradise. Then, we treated ourselves to a Viking River Cruise on the Danube River in Europe. We started out in Prague (the European city that is so beautiful that even Hitler refused to bomb it), and then picked up the river boat in Nuremburg, Germany. We spent our time soaking up the spectacular scenery, architecture, music, art and history of the region as we followed the Danube through Germany to Vienna and ending in Budapest. You can’t help but be transformed when you step into this other world. And, so I was.
I stopped playing the same old tapes, thinking the same busy thoughts…basically running on auto pilot. For two weeks, my mind remained open to beautiful locations, exotic foods, interesting people, different conversations, paths that had been trod by changing cultures over hundreds of years. There were new discoveries around every corner!
I can’t tell you just how much finer tuned my intuitive senses are since then. I believe getting yourself out of your ordinary routine can have great and positive effects on your soul's growth. You can dive in with big plans or you can start where you are, with baby steps. Eat something different for breakfast. Drive a new route to work. Start with small changes. Free up a little space every chance you get. When you take away the routine, you're free to make new and wonderful choices! Surprise yourself!
