Listen - From The Chair Hosted By Mike Hamilton: Georgetown's Lee Reed
Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges Prez Wheelan on North Carolina's outcome with the NCAA, "It does raise the question of what did you really do?... and at worst we should probably ask that question. [...] We’re working through the report. It says a lot, but it says nothing, so we are trying to ferret out what it actually says." Carolina is due to be reaccredited next month & now Wheelan is changing her tune after saying last month there was no need for further review in connection to the Tar Heels' dealings with the NCAA. Former System Board of Governors member & Raleigh mayor Fetzer believes UNC is in "clear violation" of its agreement with SACS. More. (link)
Additionally from Chapel Hill, USA Today's Berkowitz supplies more context to North Carolina MBB HC Williams' name appearing in filings by plaintiff attorneys in student-athlete compensation cases facing the NCAA. Williams' comments came from a deposition back in September of 2016 & included, "Sitting here right now, I cannot think of any adverse effects. [...] No. I don't think they would be less inclined to watch UNC basketball," on the question if health insurance for student-athletes for 10 years after their exit would impact fan interest in his program. Williams also said he would have confidence in the university to implement such a change, if it were to occur. (link)
ESPN MBB analyst Bilas is one of the most outspoken voices calling for change around the MBB landscape. To further support his positions, Bilas publishes his "Opus." Remedies: 1) Hire a commissioner; 2) Create a new set of governing rules; 3) "Division I basketball must contract"; 4) "The NCAA needs an adversarial system of dispute resolution'; 5) Each individual institution should dictate eligibility for student-athletes, not a central office; 6) Allow student-athletes to leverage their name, image & likeness; and, 7) Immediate resignation of NCAA Prez Emmert. "It is not at all surprising that Mark Emmert is using this 'crisis' to forward an agenda. He has never let a good crisis go to waste before, so there is no indication he will let this one go to waste. But his rhetoric in the wake of this crisis is absolutely galling." (link)
New Kennesaw State AD Overton was officially introduced to Owls student-athletes yesterday, "My primary focus here is to be a teammate and to always push you up, not me, but you. It will always be the focus. I have done that my entire life, and it is something that I very much believe in. If you believe in people and show people that you care about them, they will go through a wall for you. […] We have great goals and a great foundation. The foundation is already laid here. So, why am I here? I am here to go higher. I want to every day make sure we get better. Whether it happens to be student-athletes and academics or sport performance, we're going to work to get better every single day, and you can count on me to support you." (link)
Auburn: Jordan-Hare Stadium won't be getting a new videoboard in the North end zone as Prez Leath says, "If the board had a real passion for this, I was fine with going forward. But the scoreboard's 20 years old. It doesn't really matter if it's 21 years old. It's not an emergency. It's not a crisis. If the consensus is you want to wait, we might as well." (link); Former 21-year Women's Golf HC Evans is reportedly part of the search committee to identify, vet & hire a new AD for the Tigers. No word on who else may be part of the group. (link); SEC Country's Ferguson positions the search as one that needs to focus primarily on those outside the AU family to move the department forward. (link); Former multi-spot FB HC Tommy Tuberville believes he's the most qualified candidate. Seriously. (link)
Oklahoma FB becomes just the third program to don Jordan Brand as the Sooners will do starting next season. MBB & WBB are obviously also part of the mix. Retail to start hitting next summer. Release from Norman includes some solid video work, along with excitement from MBB student-athletes for the announcement. (link)
USF already has one of the most impressive facility portfolios across the 'Group of 5' & now the Bulls are committing to a $40M FB Center to include indoor practice space, a new locker room, lounge, strength & conditioning, sports med & more. Bulls AD Harlan: "The addition of more than 160,000 square feet of state-of-the-art space dedicated to student-athlete excellence will have a profound impact on our ability to recruit and prepare the best and brightest for competition at the highest level." No word on a timeline for completion yet as fundraising continues. (link)
Money, Money, Money: Davidson gets a $5.6M anonymous commitment from donors that will "more than double" Baseball's scholarship allotment with four new endowed spots. HC Cooke calls the gift "deeply transformative." The donor group is still pushing to raise enough for one more fully-endowed scholarship. (link); Comments from Appalachian State's $10M alum Ricks to Mountaineer student-athletes, "This isn’t about us old timers sitting up here. It’s about you guys, giving you the opportunity, the facilities, the medical training, the support staff to make your time here special and obviously to make this university one of the best and top universities in the United States." (link); Delaware announces a $750M university-wide campaign that will include $60M worth of upgrades & construction for the athletic complex. $500M already raised. (link); Arkansas will make good use of part of a $2M gift for a scholarship endowment. (link)
Korn Ferry interviewed 57 female CEOs from 41 Fortune 1000 companies and 16 large privately held ones to see "What Makes Women CEOs Different." Findings: 1. They worked harder and longer to get to the top - an average of four years older than their male counterparts and worked in more roles along the way; 2. Driven by both a sense of purpose and achieving business results; 3. Differentiating traits - such as courage, risk-taking, resilience, agility and managing ambiguity - sustained the women's success on the road to CEO;  4. More likely to engage the power of teams - humility scores were "significantly higher than the benchmark;" 5. Despite evident potential, women didn't generally set their sights on becoming CEO - set business targets and sought new challenges instead of focusing on personal career advancement; 6. The group shared STEM and financial backgrounds that served as a springboard. KF COO Orr "One thing that struck us during the research was how closely the women CEOs’ traits aligned with those of the modern leaders boards are now seeking: courageous and able to successfully navigate uncertainty and ambiguity in a constantly shifting environment." Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
The WNBA is set to allow another corporate logo on team jerseys, as well as corporate branding on the foul line of every non-ESPN televised game. League COO Parry: "We believe that brands will be interested in this because it’s a way for them to expand and deepen their relationship with their constituents. And with the national narrative going on right now, they’re interested in aligning with brands like the WNBA that stand for diversity, inclusion and equality and being conscious on how our athletes are leading the charge on social change." (link); Manchester City's behind-the-scenes deal with Amazon Prime is reportedly worth $13.1M in rights fees. (link)

LSU AD Alleva frames the impact of a potential tax change to eliminate deductions for college athletics giving, "It’s impossible to tell how people would react but potentially it really could be disastrous to intercollegiate athletics in the form we know it now. I don’t have any way of making that money up." Tigers Senior Assoc. AD for External Affairs Munson points to the $50M to $60M in annual giving tied to tickets, "The bottom line is if there are any questions about whether or not we could absorb something of this nature, we could not." (link)
Orlando Sentinel reporter Bianchi calls UCF's 18th-place ranking in the CFP "insulting." AD White agrees: "Look at the games we’ve won and how we’ve looked as we’ve won them. To have multiple two-loss teams ranked ahead of us is disrespectful to us and our conference." Bianchi suggests changing the name from the College Football Playoff Committee to the College Football Playoff Cartel for the Privileged and Powerful. "At least then determined and diligent men like UCF coach Scott Frost and his unbeaten Knights would understand that this unfair and inequitable system is not designed for teams like them. They could then come to grips with the fact that there is no room at the inn, no seat on the bus, no opportunity for them to reach the pinnacle of their sport because they are not a member of the Power 5 conferences’ privileged class." (link)
MBB-FBI: Alabama student-athlete Sexton will sit for just one game, tonight's season-opener against Memphis. Crimson Tide AD Byrne: "He will be eligible for competition in the team's home opener on Tuesday versus Lipscomb. We appreciate the NCAA's efforts to reach a timely resolution of his eligibility." (link); Ole Miss AD Bjork says his department took a good look at MBB's potential involvement, "There’s no red flags that we’ve discovered in anything. We trust in how Andy runs the program and our players, their backgrounds and all those things. We’ve looked into all sorts of different aspects of it." (link); Western Kentucky HC Stansbury: "Everybody acts like it must have just started. Well, nah, I guess they just found out. I mean, this ain’t nothing new in college basketball. Probably you could figure out when and how, but I don’t think it took anybody by surprise." (link); Adidas continues to kill it. 31% growth in North American for its Q3, MBB developments have virtually no impact, per leadership. (link)
Florida AD Stricklin wins the day with this "public service announcement" on Twitter in response to speculation on his FB HC search, "Believe only half of what you see and nothing that you hear." Edgar Allan Poe. (link)
More HC Notes: Mississippi State AD Cohen says the success FB HC Mullen has had could not have been imagined back when Cohen was as student-athlete in Starkville. Yahoo's Thamel writes on MSU's potential challenge of keeping Mullen in tow, Cohen continues, "Mississippi State fans will never take for granted this journey that Dan has taken us on." (link); SI's Deitsch asked UConn WBB HB Auriemma about notable hoops HCs speaking out on politics, says he's not repping the university when he states his position, but protects his right to an opinion. (link); Interesting read from ESPN's Low on TCU FB boss Patterson who says he interviewed for both Nebraska & Tennessee in past years, but knew upon sitting down with leadership from both he wasn't the guy. More. (link); William & Mary WBB HC Swanson gets an extended deal through the 2021-2022 campaign. (link); ECU AD Compher will hire a new Women's Soccer HC after 19-year boss Donnenwirth resigns. (link); Eastern Illinois AD Michael tabs Jackson State Women's Tennis HC Alexis for the same spot in Charleston. (link)
Deals: Iowa will work with Fredrikson & Byron on its employment policies review. Sounds like a 60-day process. No more than $95K plus execution costs. (link); Georgia inks with PrimeSport as its "Official Fan Travel & Hospitality Partner." (link); Rice & IMG College extend out to 2026, deal helps to upgrade digital signage for the Owls. (link); Eastern Michigan set to work with Game Plan to enhance the student-athlete experience. (link); Tailgate Guys goes country, will handle pre-event options for Kenny Chesney's Trip Around the Sun Tour next summer at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. (link)
Hellman: Extraordinary Lockers
More on Notre Dame FB's resurgence this season comes from CBSSports.com's Dodd. Fighting Irish AD Swarbrick on last season, "The issues were discreet and identifiable. We lost a certain amount of accountability in the program. We had lost a certain level of competitiveness. The kids fought like hell externally. The staff dynamic wasn't what it should be." More, on expectations in the marketplace, "It's all reality television. You're voted off the island or you're fired. Culturally, that's where we are. [...] I'm dealing with what I think is one of six coaches in America that have coached in a national championship game. You've got a lot of fundamental things in place." (link)
Former Louisville AD Jurich continues to tell his story. Here's the full transcript with WDRB as Jurich says he didn't really want to talk about the developments of the last two months, but, "These people have all been good to me, and it's just something I feel that I owe the community." Interestingly, one of the interviewers was former UofL Volleyball standout George, who asked about the institution's motivations. Jurich: "I think they wanted a change. And that's fine. That's their prerogative, when you have a new board. They have the prerogative to do that. I have no problem with that." Thought he had a solid relationship with Papa John's boss Schnatter, still doesn't understand what led the pizza mogul to rail on athletics last summer. Believes the university "has to trust" The Compliance Group's Smrt, on if he'll be an AD again, "Don't know. There's a lot of things going through our mind right now. We're just going to sort things out and see what happens." Lots more. (link)
In follow up to the Pacific budget woes covered in this space yesterday, Prez Eibeck announced some changes in the way the athletic department will operate moving forward. Per a spokesman, athletics will have to pay back the $4.2M it overspent last year and is expected to right the ship to a balanced budget within two years without cutting scholarships for current student-athletes. A new business manager in athletics will report directly to the VP of Business & Finance on the university side, who must approve athletics expenditures greater than $10K. Further, Pacific will provide "more immediate and informative financial reporting" to help supervisors keep track of their spending. (link)
Sticking with finances, East Carolina receives $17M less in direct institutional support than most of its AAC counterparts, as the Pirates cashed in just $608,354 in FY16 compared to the conference average of $17.6M. State laws in North Carolina prohibit schools to fund athletics through tuition and appropriations. ECU's $44M budget includes the $3.9M move to the AAC from Conference USA, $1M annual COA, adding WLax for $500K and a $2.5M shortfall in scholarships due to out-of-state student-athletes. ECU also fell below the conference average in league distributions & royalties, licensing, ads and sponsorships. All of that, coupled with below projected tix sales in FB this season, were part of Vice Chancellor Niswander's discussion with the BOT yesterday. (link)
Disney-ESPN: Another tough financial quarter out of Burbank. As it applies to ESPN, subs were down, as was advertising revenue, but carriage fees were up, basically creating a wash. The only unit that increased its bottom line was the Parks division. (link); Here's the full earnings call transcript in which CEO Iger says the ESPN subscriber dip wasn't as deep as part quarters, points to early next year for the new ESPN OTT play that will be called 'ESPN+.' Buoyed by the ESPN family of networks being available on virtually every OTT option in the marketplace. ESPN+ will have ads. (link); SI's Deitsch reports the Worldwide Leader will lay off another 100ish staffers after Thanksgiving with SportsCenter getting hit hard. (link)
Also Noticed: Northern Kentucky brass go with St. Cloud State (DII) Interim Prez Vaidya as the new boss in Highland Heights. (link); At Indiana State the selection is Central Missouri (DII) Provost Curtis as the new Prez for the Sycamores. (link); Penn State AD Barbour says she's still chatting with Pitt peer Lyke on extending the FB series between the two. (link); Here's the email exchange between Tennessee AD Currie & former Vol for Life lead Davis on his exit. (link); Georgia Tech is still looking at the possibility of securing a 12th FB game this season. (link); IPFW will transition its brand to black & gold colors with the university's affiliation shift. (link); The time of FB games in the SEC is down to 3:19 this season from 3:26 in 2016. (link); From SBD/SBJ's Karp: "Notre Dame football fans not flocking to NBC, despite strong 2017 season. NBC viewership pacing below 2016. Could be lowest season avg. since 2011 at this rate. Still have Navy game Nov. 18 (any figures exclude NBCSN game against Miami of Ohio)." (link)
Tomorrow is a momentous day at DePaul as the Blue Demons welcome Notre Dame to the brand new Wintrust Arena. DePaul AD Jean Lenti Ponsetto covers a bunch of interesting ground on 1.Q in connection to her personal pre- & in-game agenda, some back story on how the new venue came to be, the benefit of driving more students & alums to tips & how the new building will change her lens of analyzing success for her Men's & Women's Basketball programs. Listen by clicking the link. - link (length - 16:36)
