Join us for a community conversation about drug use
Workgroup Updates

Marketing & Communications

- At this first convening, the group discussed the challenges TYSA has been facing from the community and professional perspectives and determined a few strategies to communicate our purpose and expertise moving forward. These included: holding a TYSA town hall (for community), hosting a legislative breakfast (for elected officials), blogging after attending/presenting at high profile events and developing a TYSA stamp of approval for all TYSA members.
- The next meeting will be dedicated to determining what resources we need to market our brand and communicate our message and how we will obtain them.

Opioid

- Two additional drop box locations have been selected for funding for drug disposal drop boxes bringing the total number of community (non-precinct) drop boxes to 4. The group discussed ways to expand the number of drop boxes in the community such as incentivizing (via tax deductions or additional dollars to offset costs) the medications that are sent back.
- The group discussed the Columbia Capstone report and the need for continued education among substance use treatment providers around best practices and current evidence based treatments. Members also suggested writing a journal article of our opioid work to present to the Steering Committee prior to publishing.
- Targets were established for the Opioid Safety Initiative. The group committed to training 5 businesses in two of our highest overdose neighborhoods, St. George & Great Kills over the next 6 months.

Social Norms

- The group revisited one of their priorities and strategies and made adjustments in line with successes to build on and gaps identified. The group also looked at evidence-based strategies to address marijuana use among youth, which suggested that positive reframing and focusing on autonomy and alternatives to drug use is an effective approach.
- The Halloween sticker shock campaign to raise awareness of the consequences of providing alcohol to minors was implemented in local stores throughout Staten Island. The campaign was carried out by youth from St. Marks ALC, New Dorp High School, Curtis High School, and Project Hospitality and included stickers in English & Spanish.
Thank you to our volunteers, Maggie Howard & Pat Tooker, who will facilitate the Parents You Matter Community Conversation on  11/18!
