In order to carry a positive action, we must develop here a positive vision.

The New Media Consortium (NMC) is pleased to announce four new members have joined the Board of Directors: Christina Engelbart, Cynthia Golden, Kyle Bowen, and Marco Torres. With Eden Dahlstrom, Executive Director, and Gardner Campbell, Board Chair, at the helm, the Board of Directors is poised to  govern the NMC and serve the community with visionary leadership.

“We are delighted to welcome Kyle, Christina, Cynthia, and Marco to the NMC Board of Directors,” said Gardner. “Being stewards of the NMC’s mission is a responsibility the Board of Directors takes very seriously. We wholeheartedly support that mission, and we are humbled by our members’ diverse and extraordinary contributions to our shared commitment.”

Meet the New NMC Board Members: In Their Own Words

CYNTHIA GOLDEN
Director, University Center for Teaching & Learning, University of Pittsburgh

“The NMC has a long history of encouraging innovation, exploration, and collaboration among its educational, corporate and community members. This provides a huge benefit to higher education, and a sandbox in which to explore and play. I have seen first-hand the benefits of participating in an organization like the NMC. My university benefits directly from what we learn when we engage with the NMC community. For example, we use the NMC Horizon Report in our yearly planning efforts as a tool to help us think about the future -- about what will be important to our students and faculty and about how we will address the challenges ahead.”

KYLE BOWEN
Director, Educational Technology, Penn State University

“The NMC has long been the home for the creatives, the dreamers, the makers, and those seeking the thrill of innovation. In an environment clamoring for academic transformation, what greater organization and what better time to lead new thinking around teaching and learning. The drive to use emerging media to engage students in new ways is no longer at the edges, but firmly situated in the mainstream. The NMC has a tradition of leading future thinking about creative new ways to engage students, and I’m looking forward to working with the NMC board to expand the impact this work has on our community.”

MARCO TORRES
Director of Story, Digital Promise

“Education is at an intersection. We’re asking ourselves questions on the relevancy and meaningfulness of how education is adding value to learning today. Now, more than ever, the world is asking us, the education community, to better solve problems, connect dots, and tell the stories of what the journey looks like along the way. We need smarter guides to help us leverage today’s resources to improve the quality of life for ourselves, our communities, and the world. The NMC has always been an almanac, a map, and a GPS for many decision-makers and problem-solvers trying to make sense, survive, and thrive in this complicated ecosystem.”

CHRISTINA ENGELBART
Executive Director, Doug Engelbart Institute

“I was first introduced to the NMC in 2009 when my late father Doug Engelbart, a pioneer of new media and networked personal computing, was named NMC Fellow. He believed as do I that the future of our planet depends on our collective ability to dramatically improve learning, discovery, and problem-solving across public and private sectors, especially in educational institutions, and the best way to do that is through networked improvement communities, like the NMC. The NMC is a very special community of visionaries, innovators and practitioners who are reinventing the future of education in very qualitative ways.”

These four leaders join six others (Don Henderson, Michael Berman, Crista Copp, Joan Lippincott, and Liz Neely -- chaired by Gardner) who share the same commitment to connecting NMCers at the intersection of imagination and technology to spark innovation, learning, and creativity.

“The ten individuals of the NMC Governing Board volunteer their time to help NMC realize its vision to be a global network for innovation,” said Eden. “I am so pleased to welcome our four newest Board members to the NMC family. As we enter our 25th year as organization dedicated to sparking innovation, learning, and creativity, the Board will play a critical role in helping the NMC community celebrate our past while looking towards the future.”

The NMC Board of Directors and Staff will continue to keep the NMC community apprised of new developments and resources to drive real educational change across our global network for innovation.
