Glenns' Prayer Updates from Liberia

Update on Liberia's Elections

Hello Prayer Warriors,
Thank you so much for praying with us during Liberia's first round of elections (October 10th). About two weeks ago the results were announced and the top two candidates were chosen to be included in the run-off elections which where originally scheduled to happen this week (November 7th). The day they made the announcement of the results of the first election (Oct 19th), everything was peaceful, though it wasn't without grumbling and of course a few rumors going around that the election was rigged, conducted unfair, etc. I decided to wait a few days before sending out an update just to make sure everything over the weekend remained calm. And over these past two weeks, things have remained peaceful and calm. Praise God!

However, amidst that peace, there is still a ton of uncertainty that has been developing. After election first-round results were announced, the candidate who came in 3rd place (and therefore will not be included in the runoff elections) decided to file an official complaint with the National Elections Commission (NEC) saying that he believed the elections were conducted unfairly. The NEC and other authorities overseeing this election therefore had the obligation to investigate the legitimacy of this complaint and so they have been doing that over the past week and now everything is just on hold with the elections. For the past few days, the country has been eagerly awaiting the announcement from the Supreme Court as to what they have found in their investigation and what will be the next step in terms of the election process. The media is filled with rumors....they will re-do the first round of elections, they will put in place an interim president, the run-off elections could still happen on Nov 7th, the elections will not still happen on November 7th. (Here is the most recent update from a reliable source on the election: https://af.reuters.com/article/commoditiesNews/idAFL8N1N95PN).

All this uncertainty puts stress on the country, it allows rumors to spread, it creates anxiety, it fosters lack of trust in government authorities, it puts strain on the already desperate economic situation, and it makes having school and planning for school just about impossible. But it is important to remember though, even through all this uncertainty, that God is still in control and we praise Him that everything still remains calm and peaceful. Would you join us in praising God for the mercy and love that He has been and is showing to Liberia right now? And would you also continue to join us in prayer that this election business would be able to get sorted out quickly and smoothly and that God's will would continue to be done here in Liberia? Thank you so much for interceding alongside of us and Liberia for this election process.

Prayer/Praise Updates
  • Sarah, Bill and Holly's 2nd youngest, had malaria last week. She was really sick for a few days until we figured out what it was, but praise God she has returned back to her normal self thanks to prayer and lots of love from our Liberian neighbors.
  • David, Bill and Holly's youngest, now has malaria. Last night he was really sick but they started him on treatment and he is already starting to look better and be more active this morning. Pray that he continues to get better!
  • Health for everyone really. A lot of the ARC staff have been sick, Bill is sick this morning, Sam (the oldest) has not been feeling well, Nathan has been feeling off for the past week, and last week I had an unexplained fever. Something is definitely going around and we are all in need of prayers for physical strength and healing.
  • Bill and Holly are dealing with some difficult situations that are going on back home. They continue to praise God and trust God in the midst of these trials but they could use our prayers for additional strength and encouragement.
  • LICC's financial situation is improving slightly. They received some of the money that was owed to them by the government and were able to pay 1 month's wages to all their employees. They still owe an additional 2 months pay to everyone at this point. It looks like they may be receiving some of that money in the next week or two (however, with everything going on with elections, that could also be delayed). Please continue to pray for the school and all the employees. It truly is amazing to see how they all still faithfully come to work each day despite the salary situation. Lack of salary is not unusual in Liberia, for teachers especially; however, what is unusual is their response. Praise God for His comforting hand on this situation.
