Marine Corps Anniversary Service and Tour

Friday, November 10th at 10:00am

(Coffee and pastries will be served at the start of the program)

Join active and retired members of the United States Marine Corps at Laurel Hill Cemetery as they commemorate the 242nd anniversary of the founding of the Marine Corps in Philadelphia on November 10, 1775. A service will take place at the gravesite of Brigadier General Jacob A. Zeilin, the first United States Marine non-brevet general, who served as the seventh Commandant of the Corps from 1864 to 1876. After the service, the Cemetery will mark Veterans’ Day with a tour of the final resting places of the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Learn about the people who died in battle in the Revolutionary War, the Indian Wars, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, the Civil War, the Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, in Korea, and in Vietnam. Their heroic exploits will be relived and honored.

Section S Expansion Project

If you've visited the grounds lately, you have probably noticed some exciting changes happening in the North Section! In addition to restoring numerous historic walking paths throughout the Shrubbery and Chapel Sections, construction to expand Section S is currently underway. The area is being developed to accommodate a community mausoleum, new spaces for full burials and cremations, and a scattering garden located on the hillside leading down to the Schuylkill River. Construction is expected to be completed in 2018 and will provide more burial options for families in an otherwise filled section of the cemetery. In the meantime, please pardon our appearance and note that existing family plots will not be affected by the work.
