Edward Elgar (1857-1934)
Quintet in A minor for Piano and String Quartet, Op. 84

Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992)
Quartet for the End of Time

The piece is considered to be one of his most influential and important works. Messiaen was taken as a prisoner of war by the Germans in June of 1940, and it was during his time in the camp that he composed the Quartet. It is a somewhat unusual combination of instruments [clarinet, violin, cello, and piano], due the fact that he was writing for fellow musicians that were imprisoned in the same camp.

The Quartet was premiered by Messiaen himself and the other prisoners on a rainy day in January of 1941. Messiaen himself said, “Never was I listened to with such rapt attention and comprehension.”
