Solid Brass Ensemble

Saturday, November 18 • 7:30 p.m.

Double the size of a typical brass quintet, Solid Brass transports listeners on a journey through medieval ceremonial music, John Philip Sousa, Strauss, Bizet, Benny Goodman, the Beach Boys and more. Players are drawn from the New York Philharmonic and Metropolitan Opera orchestras, Broadway shows and major-label studio sessions. For more, see the performer biography.

Civic Music has hosted hundreds of terrific programs over its long and distinguished history, but we're pretty sure we’ve never had an evening with medieval ceremonial music, the opera “Carmen” and Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” all on the same bill. We're in for a treat with this concert program.

All tickets are general seating.

Post-concert reception: change of venue

Please join us for a post-concert reception following the Sat., Nov. 18 Solid Brass Ensemble concert. In a change of locations, we’ll be in the Waterford Room at St. Brendan’s Inn, 234 S. Washington Street. Join us for complimentary snacks and cash bar.

Opera? Perhaps…

Many years ago, Civic Music regularly booked recitals by Met superstars (Roberta Peters, Robert Merrill, Brigitte Nielsen) before fees and logistics intervened. Well, we’re now investigating whether we can honor a bit of that history by signing on as a potential co-sponsor to help this community stage (as early as 2018) the sort of semi-informal “opera in the park” summer concert that has proved popular in other Midwest cities. It would be a bonus addition to our five-show series. We’ll keep you posted.

Dinner plans? Make them count.

Remember ‘Dine to Donate’ every third Wednesday at the Perkin’s Restaurant at Military and Shawano, 5 to 8 p.m., with a share of all proceeds to Civic Music. Mark your calendars.

Speaking of bonuses…

President Chris Sampson and his wife, Carolyn, recently traveled to Menominee, MI for a River City Concert Association preview the Anderson & Roe piano duo we’ll feature in spring. Their report: Reciprocity is a good thing! The pianists were terrific, the Blesch Auditorium is a nice little venue, easy to find, and less than a 1-hour drive. It’s free if you’ve added your name to that night’s Brown County Civic Music pass list. Remaining dates include Forever Young musical theatre (02/06/18); Roy and Rosemary piano and violin (03/22/18); or the Glenn Miller Orchestra (04/24/18). Contact the Brown County Civic Music Association office at 920-338-1801 for ticket information.
