Congratulations Cynthia!
Our learners and tutors witness many great accomplishments together each and every month. It is a privilege to congratulate one of our learners, Cynthia who earned two Certificates from Whatcom Community College this past month. She successfully completed her Medical Terminology II Course and Structured Query Language (SQL), which is the standard language for relational database management systems.
Cynthia moved from Taiwan to Bellingham in 2012. She came to Whatcom Literacy Council with the goal of improving her English reading and writing skills. Cynthia and her tutor Carole have been meeting since the spring of this year.
Congratulations Cynthia and best wishes
for your continued success!

Learn More About Advocacy with ProLiteracy
The Whatcom Literacy Council is a member of ProLiteracy, the largest adult literacy and basic education organization in the world. They have a great website (www.Proliteracy.org) with information, resources, and tips for people who are working in the field. It can be a great way to get inspired about your work as an adult literacy volunteer.
If you are interested in the legislation and policies related to literacy and adult basic education, you may want to check out their advocacy information (under the “Get Involved” tab.) As a ProLiteracy advocate, you can help strengthen our collective voice to create awareness of adult literacy challenges, influence public policy, and create needed change.
They have templates for letters to send to your elected officials, and a wonderful “Advocacy Toolkit” complete with:
- Adult literacy talking points
- Tips for calling an elected official
- Tips on sending a message to your representative in Congress
- Tips for getting on the record in town hall meetings or public hearings
- Tips on In-District Group Visits
- Tips for writing letters to the editor
If you want to stay up-to-date on ProLiteracy news and events you can subscribe to their newsletter as well.

The Literacy Breakfast with Nancy Pearl
a Roaring Success!
The Whatcom Literacy Council’s biggest fundraiser took place on Thursday, November 2nd. The sold out event had BTC’s Settlemyer Hall packed. Guest speakers were Lisa Wilson of the Lummi Nation, tutor Cat McIntyre, and learner Bozena Pasieczna. Ann McAllen of the Whatcom County Library System received the “First Friends” award.
Celebrated librarian, author, and NPR commentator Nancy Pearl shared her favorite reads, with those titles available for sale at the event by our friends at Village Books. We would like to thank MyTrafficMan.net’s Legal Care Center Academy for sponsoring us at the “Nobel” level, Phillips66 and Bramble Berry for their support as “Pulitzer” sponsors, as well as our many friends who came in as “Newbery” sponsors.
We would also like to thank all of the people whose gifts helped us bring in over $42,000 from the event. All proceeds go directly towards our free adult literacy programs, connecting volunteers with neighbors who ask for help right here in Whatcom County.

Inclement Weather Policy
In inclement weather our motto is “Safety First!” If it is dangerous to drive please cancel your appointments and reschedule them. If Bellingham Technical College and/or the Bellingham School District are closed, so will we, because it means that it is too dangerous to get around parts of Bellingham.
