Dear Companions of the Road, November 7, 2017
Thank you so much for your prayers as I've waited on the Lord for his direction during these two months that I've been in Michigan accompanying my dad on his journey toward heaven. And yes, that journey is not over yet! This strong man has a perseverant body that keeps hanging on, countering all predictions. This morning I was reading Psalm 31 to him, and these words from verse 15 were in bold print on my heart:
"My times are in your hands . . ."
It is so true; we've been saying it over and over, that only the Lord knows when Dad will be making that passage. But the sweatshirt he wears so often, with the logo from Piatt Lake where he and Mom had their lovely retirement home, says it all: he is "just this side of Paradise." (Piatt Lake is south of Paradise, MI, in the U.P. !) He may go soon, or it may be a a little while. It cannot be that much longer until he flies away. I've been singing this great old song to him lately:
"I'll fly away, O glory, I'll fly away,
when I die, hallelujah, by and by, I'll fly away."
I had hoped to see him through to that moment, but I cannot stay indefinitely. So tomorrow I will be flying away, but it will be in a jet across the Atlantic to Abidjan where the longsuffering Glenn will meet me. I am glad to go and sad to leave. I'm sure you can understand!
So do continue to uphold my dad, Dwight Slater, in prayer as he waits for his great Homegoing. And pray also for my three brothers located here in Michigan (Dwight, Bruce and Brent Slater) as they work out ongoing care for him
I constantly thank the Lord for giving me these wonderful moments with my father, with many opportunities to share great memories, or sing, or read Scripture (what he loves most), or just sit beside him holding his hand.
There is much lying ahead, but I just wanted to share this with you before I take off. I have been overwhelmed by the many messages of support, and by the memories so many have sent of their gratitude for my dad and the way that he touched their lives.
Our times are in the Lord's hands, yes, and that is the best thing ever! His hands are loving and strong, and he knows what he is doing!
Yours in his hands,
Linn, for Glenn toO
