Allegheny Cleantech University Prize Competition
Approaching Deadline: December 20


Calling all future clean energy entrepreneurs and innovative students from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia! Do you have an idea for a product or service focused on renewable energy or energy efficiency? Are you interested in competing for $50,000?

Time is running out to submit your applications for the Allegheny Cleantech University Prize Collegiate Competition, which is hosted by the Wilton E. Scott Institute for Energy Innovation at Carnegie Mellon University. All you have to do is fill out this very simple statement of intent form by December 20, 2017. And don't forget, your team's two-minute video and 10-slide deck are due January 15, 2018.

The 2018 Allegheny Cleantech UP Competition takes place on Friday, April 6 during Carnegie Mellon Energy Week, April 4-6, 2018.
New U.S. Department of Defense Prize 

This year, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) is offering a single $35,000 prize at the National Cleantech University Prize Competition to one winning team with a prototype. In addition to the three teams eligible to compete at the National Competition for the DOE prize, each participating regional competition is eligible to send 1-2 qualified teams for this prize track.

LaunchCMU Features Allegheny Cleantech UP Winner RoBotany

In October, RoBotany CEO and Co-Founder Austin Webb (Tepper'17) was a featured speaker at LaunchCMU. Hosted by CMU's Swartz Center for Entrepreneurship, this technology startup and research showcase focused on robotics in manufacturing. Webb spoke about how RoBotany minimizes the environmental impact of traditional agriculture and increases efficiency and crop output with automated hardware.
HiberSense Energy-Saving Workshop, Dec. 14

HiberSense, a 2016 Allegheny Cleantech UP competitor, offers a Connected Climate Control system that provides residential and commercial building owners, renters and facility managers with better insight and control over occupant comfort and energy efficiency. On December 14, organization leaders and facility/operations managers can learn energy-saving tips from the company.

Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships (NEEP) Research Opportunities

NEEP is interested in partnering with academic institutions on student research projects. It will review applications on an ongoing basis and will respond within two weeks of receipt of an application. 
F U N D I N G   O P P O R T U N I T I E S
DOE's Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program
Deadline: December 4

Phase I grants are 6-12 months in duration with maximum award amounts of $150,000 or $225,000, depending on the research topic. Small businesses that successfully complete their research will compete for funding in Fiscal Year 2019 to carry out their prototype or research and development during Phase II. Several companies developed by CMU faculty, such as LeanFM Technologies and Anactsis, have previously received SBIR grants.

National Science Foundation: Partnerships for Innovation (PFI)
Deadline: February 1

PFI funds translational research and technology development efforts that catalyze partnerships to accelerate innovations that address significant societal needs. 
VentureWell E-Team Grant Program
Deadline: February 7

This program provides early-stage funding of up to $25,000 and cultivates opportunities for student STEM inventors and innovators to move ideas out of the lab and into the market. 
Call for Proposals: West Penn Power Sustainable Energy Fund (WPPSEF)
Deadline: February 27

WPPSEF provides investment capital for clean energy projects that benefit the West Penn Power ratepayer. The organization is looking for innovative projects to fund through a Request for Proposals.

Urban Future Competition
Deadline: December 1

The Urban Future Competition debuts the world’s most revolutionary smart mobility, smart city, and smart grid technologies by bringing the brightest entrepreneurs together with mission-driven investors, policy leaders and corporate sponsors for a prestigious pitch competition in NYC.

CMU Scott Institute for Energy Innovation Associate Director for Policy Outreach and Professor of the Practice in Engineering and Public Policy Deborah Stine will present a panel titled "Energy Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Is it Different?" 
Clean Energy Trust (CET) Cleantech UP Competition
Extended Deadline: December 4

The Cleantech UP is a great opportunity for university students looking to receive mentorship and exposure for their business plan. There will be up to 10 finalists pitching at CET's Feb. 8 showcase in Chicago, including one who will win the $50,000 prize and three who will go on to the DOE's National Competition to pitch for additional funding. 

Columbia University Case Competition
Registration Opens: December 4

This Case Competition, which takes place on February 1, allows teams of graduate students to present creative and innovative solutions for the main challenges facing the energy sector. The case topic is on micro-grids. This is an incredible opportunity to apply your skills to solving key challenges in the energy sector, and provides an exclusive opportunity to interact with professionals, professors and students in the energy sector.

National Renewable Energy Laboratory Industry Growth Forum Company Presentations
Deadline: December 4

The annual Industry Growth Forum takes place May 3-4, 2018 in Colorado. Convening more than 350 investment and entrepreneurial attendees, the Forum features presentations from 30 emerging clean energy companies, provocative panels led by thought leaders, one-on-one meetings between entrepreneurs and the investment community, and organized networking opportunities.

2018 McGinnis Venture Competition
Deadline: December 5

The McGinnis Venture Competition brings together CMU's best and brightest student entrepreneurs to compete for $60K in investments. All participants receive crucial interaction with alumni entrepreneurs and venture capitalists, an opportunity to raise capital and valuable feedback for their ventures.

ComEd Student Innovation Contest
Deadline: December 29

ComEd is looking for students to design a web dashboard or app that its solar customers can utilize to better understand and manage their usage. Top submissions will have an opportunity to win up to $11,600 in total prize money.

Columbia University Venture Showcase Competition
Registration Deadline: January 15; Company Pitch Deadline: January 20

The Venture Showcase event will provide ventures with a unique spotlight to pitch their innovations and ideas to a diverse panel of judges and compete for a winning prize. With participants from around the tri-state area and beyond, this event promises to bring the most cutting-edge and original ideas revolutionizing the energy industry.

AlphaLab Gear Hardware Cup
Deadline: January 23

The AlphaLab Gear Hardware Cup is a pitch competition for early-stage hardware startups. The Cup is touring six cities around the U.S. to find and highlight the most promising physical product startups in the nation. Winners in each city will receive $3K cash and other prizes.

Caltech's FLOW Competition
Deadline: February 1

FLOW's DOE Cleantech UP business plan competition is for university students and recent graduates focused on cleantech and sustainability. In addition to cleantech and clean energy, FLOW supports a broad spectrum of sustainability-related innovations, including those related to natural resource management and agricultural technologies.

Rice Business Plan Competition
Deadline: February 9

This competition is known as the world’s richest and largest graduate-level student startup competition! It's designed to give collegiate entrepreneurs a real-world experience to fine-tune their business plans and elevator pitches to generate funding to successfully commercialize their product.

Global Accelerator Learning Initiative (GALI) Competition
Deadline: December 1

Undergraduate and graduate students are invited to answer a key question for the field of entrepreneurship by analyzing GALI's unique, global dataset on early stage entrepreneurs. The competition is open to individuals and teams from universities around the world. The winning submission will be published on www.galidata.org and will be awarded $2,000.
Spring 2018 VentureBridge Program
Deadline: December 15

The VentureBridge program provides mentorship to students seeking to transform their high-tech concept into a startup. The program welcomes aspiring entrepreneurs to CMU’s Silicon Valley campus, providing unique access to the region’s venture capital ecosystem. VentureBridge is hosted by the Integrated Innovation Institute, in conjunction with CMU's Swartz Center for Entrepreneurship. 
Call for Proposals: 2018 Pennsylvania Infrastructure Technology Alliance (PITA) Program
Deadline: December 18

The Engineering Research Accelerator will consider projects with a 1-year and 2-year duration. In this cycle, PITA funding is limited to $70,000 per year. Review the proposal process and selection guidelines outlined in the RFP

AAAS Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellowship
Deadline: January 15

This Fellowship places science, engineering, and mathematics students and postdocs at media organizations nationwide. Previous fellows have worked as reporters, editors, researchers and production assistants at media outlets including WIRED, National Public Radio, Scientific American and more.
