Bingley Town Council mailing no. 12

This month we're bringing you news on the adoption of our two railway stations, and information about our upcoming Green and Clean forum on 9th September. There's also a reminder of how to cast your vote for your favourite Christmas lights design for Bingley town centre.

We also have new features on our website to report, which will be of particular interest to local community groups and people looking for information on things to do in Bingley. If you run a local group, please do take the opportunity to add your details to the site to help others to find you and get involved in our community.

Best wishes, Ros Dawson

Bingley and Crossflatts stations   adopted!

A new group of volunteers has come together in Bingley to work to enhance both Bingley and Crossflatts railway stations under Northern Rail’s formal Station Adoption scheme.

The adoption group (working title: Friends of Bingley and Crossflatts Train Stations) grew out of the Town Council’s Green and Clean forum for residents interested in plants and green spaces and keeping Bingley beautiful. It was felt that the stations were a vital part of the community and needed some additional care and attention to make them more attractive and welcoming.

Two groups of residents went on recent fact-finding missions to other adopted stations in the local rail network, including Brighouse, Sowerby Bridge and Batley, to get tips and advice from experienced groups and are now starting to draw up a plan for activity at both stations. Initial ideas include tidying and planting, vegetable or herb gardens, art and music projects, information boards and the involvement of local schools and businesses. A grant has already been awarded for some planters at both stations, and it is hoped that a practical tidy-up session will take place in early October.

Anyone interested in helping or getting involved in any capacity will be warmly welcomed to the group’s next meeting at 7.30 pm on Tuesday 19th September at the Scout HQ on Sycamore Avenue. For information, contact Derrick Hodgson on 07745 016143/ derrick.hodgson@btinternet.com or Cllr Edwina Simpson on 07932 191558 / edwina.simpson@bingleytowncouncil.gov.uk

 Website enhancements

We’re pleased to announce that we’ve recently launched new features on the Town Council’s website that provide information about local community groups, services and facilities.

Visitors to the site’s home page at www.bingleytowncouncil.gov.uk will find a new heading called Local Information, under which the first item is Community Organisations. Here we have started to gather details about local community groups located in Bingley or located just outside and serving the parish. You can browse for organisations under categories such as ‘Arts and Entertainment’, ‘Environment’ and ‘Social Groups and Community Development’ or search for a particular group if you already know its name.

If you’re running a local group and would like to see it included, it’s over to you – you can add your group’s details to the site yourself using the ‘Create a listing’ feature. Use the ‘Nature of Activity’ box to give a brief summary of what your group does and the ‘Additional Details’ box for other information, perhaps a contact name or details of meetings. Don’t forget to include an image, which can be a photograph or logo or anything else you’d like to use to identify your group.

We’ve also introduced a Services and Facilities page where you can browse or search for information about local services such as schools, dentists and meeting venues, including services provided by Bingley Town Council itself.

We hope you’ll find these features useful. If you have any questions, or need help, please contact Laura Jowett, Administrative Officer (admin.officer@bingleytowncouncil.gov.uk / 07703 188660 or Cllr Edwina Simpson (edwina.simpson@bingleytowncouncil.gov.uk / 07932 191558).

Green and Clean forum, Saturday 9th September

The Council’s next Green and Clean forum takes place from 1000 to 1200 on Saturday 9th September at Cardigan House, Ferncliffe Road in Bingley. If you have an interest in planting, green spaces, litter-clearing initiatives and generally keeping Bingley beautiful, please do come along to hear about latest developments, have a cup of tea and help us make plans for the future.

Amongst topics up for discussion will be ideas for winter planting and future summer floral displays and there’ll be an update from the station adoption group. We hope also to hear from volunteer gardening groups on how they've been beautifying their own corners of the parish. There’ll be a chance to raise any issues you are concerned about and of course opportunities to mingle and meet like-minded people.

In the meantime, if you’re on Facebook, why not look at the Keeping Bingley Beautiful page where group members exchange news and views and lots of pictures of flowers!
