 Pauline is the President of the Law Society of NSW, having served on the Council of the Law Society almost continuously since 1997. She chairs the Environmental Planning & Development and Public Law committees of the Law Society and is a past chair of its Audit committee, Nominations and Criminal Law committees among others. She continues to sit on the Indigenous Legal Issues and Criminal Law committees.
Pauline is a member of the Executive of the Board of Law Council of Australia, and sits on the LCA’s Access to Justice, National Criminal Law Liaison and Equality of Opportunity in the Law committees. She is also a past Director of the Law and Justice Foundation and the Legal Aid Commission of NSW, chairs Legal Aid’s Monitoring Committee and has sat on a number of panel selection committees for Legal Aid as well as its Human Rights committee.
Until taking up her role as President of the Law Society of NSW, Pauline had been President of the Central Coast Chapter of the Urban Development Institute of Australia (NSW Division) for the past several years.
She is also the Senior Vice President of the NSW Council for Civil Liberties, having been actively involved with the Council since 1988.

‘Vicarious Trauma’
Guest speaker: Dr Colin James

Please join us for a brief presentation on vicarious trauma, including its history as a construct and experience, likely causes, possible treatments and prevention strategies for lawyers.
 Dr Colin James has been a solicitor since 1989 and a clinical legal educator since 2001. He has researched and published in many fields associated with domestic violence, family law, legal education, legal history, legal practice and the well-being of law students and lawyers. He has qualifications in law, history, tertiary education and psychology, and he currently teaches family law and practice and supervises in professional development courses at the ANU College of Law.
Colin presents at national and international conferences and his recent publications include as a contributing editor of ‘Promoting Law Student and Lawyer Well-Being in Australia and Beyond’(Routledge), ‘Being Well in the Law: A guide for lawyers’ (Law Society NSW), ‘Did he ever hit you? Exploring the attitudes of lawyers in DV cases’ (with N. Ross in AJFL) and ‘Legal Practice on Time: The Ethical Risk and Inefficiency of the Six-Minute Unit’ (Alt.LJ).
He has supervised PhDs and DBAs on topics ranging from domestic violence and sexual assault survivors, industrial ethics and worker safety practices, and first-responders’ powers of detention in a mental health emergency.

Each year the University of Newcastle Law Student Association, in association with Sparke Helmore hosts its flagship event the Women in Law Breakfast; an opportunity for our local legal community and Law School to focus on the unique position women in law occupy.
This year the UNLSA is proud to have the Newcastle Law School Dean of Law, Professor Tania Sourdin in conversation with leading women in the legal field in a panel discussion. Catherine Henry, Catherine Henry Lawyers and Lizzie McLaughlin, Barrister at Hunter Street Chambers (and also members of our WLANSW Newcastle Committee), will be joining the panel.
