Hurricane Harvey response—from Pastor Nick:

Dear Friends,

Some of you have reached out to me asking how you can help the victims of this devastating storm. Information is available online about how you can support Lutheran Disaster Response (LDR). I worked with LDR in New Orleans following Katrina and can attest to the powerful work that they do. They have a reputation in the disaster response community as being the last organization to leave. In other words, they stay until everyone has been helped.

If you are able to support them financially, your donation will go directly to the work of helping our fellow Texans. If you aren't able to support them financially, they, and those who they will help, could certainly use your prayers.
Rally Day, the start of the Sunday School year, will be Sunday, September 10, at 9:15 a.m. This year's theme will be the 500-year anniversary of the Reformation. There will be activities for all ages. Sunday School classes begin the following Sunday, and we are looking for two team teachers. As a team teacher you would be responsible for leading the class every other Sunday. Lesson plans and materials are all provided. It's a great way to help our kids grow in faith! For more information please contact Taylor.
Music ensembles. Do you love music? Do you wish to serve by playing an instrument or using your voice? Grace Notes Bell Choir, Abiding Grace Orchestra, and Lift Every Voice Choir rehearsals begin on Wednesday, September 6. Rehearsals will meet 6:00-6:45 p.m., 6:45-7:30, and 7:30-8:30, respectively. See Vanessa or James Crixell for more information or to join. Anyone middle school age or older with a joy for singing or playing and a desire to serve the Lord through music is welcome!
Join us for confirmation. A new school year means a new confirmation year. All youth in grades 7 and 8 are invited to hang out with us on Wednesday evenings from 6:30–8:00. Our first class is on September 13, and parents of confirmation students are invited for an informational meeting at 6:30 followed by a fun activity with the students. For more information please see Pastor Nick or Taylor.
Drive with your heart. Even retirees can find themselves too busy some days, but isn’t using our time to help others the best kind of busy? Here is your opportunity. Volunteers are needed to help our fellow members who can no longer drive and need transportation for health care appointments. Carl Christensen is one of our members who needs this service. “The facility where I live has very limited transportation. They will only provide rides on Tuesdays and Thursdays to specific locations, and sometimes my appointments can’t be changed to fit this schedule.” Please contact Linda Pileggi to add your name as a volunteer driver. She will notify all volunteers by e-mail when a ride is in need to give you a chance to say “yes, I can help with that.” Thank you!
Blessing of the backpacks. This Sunday, please bring your backpack to church to receive a blessing for the start of the school year.
Grapevine Fun Train family event. On Saturday, September 16, join Taylor for a ride on one of Grapevine's vintage trains. We'll depart from the station at 10:00, but boarding starts at 9:30 a.m. RSVP to Taylor by September 10 so she can purchase tickets and make sure there's enough space for us—it's going to be a great afternoon! The ride should finish up around 11:00 a.m.

You are invited to this year's men's retreat—the annual Dove Hunt—from Friday through Sunday, September 15-17, at the Etheredge family property near Roscoe, Texas (you can arrive on Saturday, too).
