Allegations of sexual harassment & a culture of manipulation, isolation & exploitation are circling the Auburn Softball program per espnW's Junod & Lavigne. Former student-athlete Nemeth sent a 14-page letter to Alabama Governor Ivey last month with claims against the former Tigers staff. Suggestive text messages from former AC Myers to student-athletes, previous anonymous complaints to the athletic department, internal team conflict & more are all part of the article. No word from the university on if an internal investigation is underway. (link)
Southern Miss Prez Bennett has started his two-year term as Conference USA's board chairman & details challenges faced by the league & other 'Group of 5' conferences as the landscape of college athletics continually shifts. "Our work over the next two years is to make sure our voice isn’t marginalized at the national level. […] What we don’t want to see happen is for the Power 5 institutions to break away and create their own division. We just want to make sure the athletic community has a deep appreciation for what many schools and institutions bring to intercollegiate athletics." Bennett correctly identifies past & current TV deals as an accelerator to the divide between P5s & G5s, notes the difficulty of maintaining competitiveness under current NCAA rules that are setup to allow spending more money. Also, "Part of what all of our schools in Conference USA are doing is trying to work on that and get better and be the best we can where we are to attract institutions to our league and be invited — which is the key word — to join their league." (link)
Detroit Free Press' Cain calls it "fate" that Michigan AD Manuel came full circle to lead the Wolverines. UM Prez Schlissel: "We looked at outstanding candidates with experience at some of the most successful programs from all around the country. The decision to select Warde, however, was one of the easiest I’ve made since I’ve been here. Warde has proven to be a very professional athletics director with a clear set of priorities that capture how Michigan thinks about intercollegiate athletics — competition at the highest level with a commitment to the education and well-being of our student-athletes, and a great experience for our many fans." Manuel says interfacing with student-athletes is the best part of his job, "letting go coaches" the worst. Recounts lessons learned from legendary Michigan FB HC Schembechler, a bit more. (link)
Former Minnesota AD Maturi Q&As with the Star Tribune's Scoggins, outlines his involvement with the Committee on Infractions, which started via a recommendation from former Purdue AD Burke. Notes commonly reading 1,000+ pages of documents to become fully knowledgeable about a case, pegs a normal panel at seven people, says the process has given him greater appreciation for those involved. On the question of if the proceedings are "Kind of like a jury," Maturi responds, "In some ways, but it’s a hearing, not a trial. … I think we have shown statistically that we have been tremendously consistent in our decisions, even though sometimes the public doesn’t feel that way." (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Kansas Special Asst. to the AD Keating laments on the coming discontinuation of the Great Alaska Shootout, "When it was popular, there was Alaska, Hawaii and the NIT and not much else. Now you’ve got all kinds of tournaments. ESPN runs about six themselves. There are two in Hawaii, one in Puerto Rico and others. It’s an expensive trip (to Alaska). They don’t pay all expenses by any means. Once there was a big step up in how many tournaments there are, it wasn’t worth it to go up there. It’s a shame because it was a great event." Former KU student-athlete Chenowith recalls a dog sledding experience & the reality that he may have never visited Anchorage, otherwise. (link)

New Mexico is projecting ticket revenue of $6.43M for the 2017-18 competition seasons, an increase of $950K over last year's results. FB's number is $1.9M against $1.219M in FY17, MBB's is $4.2M versus $3.943 & WBB is calling for $330K against $317K. As noted by the Albuquerque Journal's Grammer, "Reaching the $1.9 million (for FB) would mark the first time the program has done so since the 2008 season." An initial forecast for MBB called for $4.8M in ticket sales before being reduced by $600K. (link)
The Journal Gazette's Reichel goes in on IPFW's budget situation, which as of 2015-16 stood at overall figures of $10.59M in expenses & $10.98M in revenues. Mastodons AD Hartley Hutton: "I look at, 'What's your return on investment?' We invest in subsidies, student fees and other resources and what do we get out of it? What does the community, campus community and students get out of it? We aren't fancy. We want to provide a good experience to our athletes, but our philosophy is that we don't have to outspend to outperform." Chancellor Carwein says Hartley Hutton's department continues to out-perform its resource base. Hartley Hutton notes how additional funding would provide more scholarship opportunities & upgrade her portfolio of facilities. Travel costs in 15-16 were $1.18M, MBB's win over Indiana last season provided all sorts of media viability. More, including a rundown of top department salaries, topped by Hartley Hutton's $137K. (link)
The University of Missouri Board of Curators approved the $98M south end zone expansion project for Memorial Stadium on Friday with $50M of the project's funding to come from 42 donors. The remainder will be paid by long-term debt paid off from premium seat ticket sales. Tix revenue is projected to increase sixfold on that end of the stadium, from $1.5M to $6M. Curator Snowden: "What we’re doing here is protecting our most valuable asset in athletics, which is football. Out of our $100-million budget, and $90 million of it comes from revenue that football provides. ... We’re enhancing not only football and our brand around the country, but we’re supporting the student athletes at the university." (link)
Jacksonville State FB defeated UT Chattanooga 27-13 yesterday in Montgomery, AL & Gamecocks AD Seitz says its an idea he'd like to try again, "We don't think we'll lose anything. When you factor in this on ESPN's flagship station, that it reaches 100 million homes, we think this is an easy call." Southern Conference Commish Iamarino echoes on the exposure value, "People are starving for college football this time of year. It's not just a great deal for these two schools and these two conferences, but it's a chance to show the whole country that we play pretty good football at this level." (link)
As the importance of digital departments continues to grow around college athletics, so too do the media's coverage of the discipline, like this one focused on LSU's efforts. Asst. FB Video Coordinator Barras points to his team's use of testimonials by former student-athletes to create unique segments, "Everybody has a highlight video. Everybody has a recruiting deal and talks about the atmosphere. But I don’t know if anybody actually has player (testimonials). ... We like it to be unique. When you come on a visit as a prospect, you want to see something you can’t see every day." Video producer Stout says he visualizes a video before shooting the shots needed for public-facing versions, instead of the other way around. (link)
Yahoo's Forde reviews the commitment of the Atlanta Falcons to keep the city as the hub for college FB, event stretching as far back as 2012 in conversations with then-SEC Commish Slive about the potential for a new building & the league's commitment to keep holding its title game in Atlanta. Of particular note, from Falcons SVP for Fan Experience Gomes: "As we looked at all the basic elements that comprise the gameday experience, we saw a trend in the satisfaction surveys. The food and beverage experience finished dead last across the board. Fans didn’t like the pricing or the service. And every stadium that opened has perpetuated that same business model. For some reason, charging a fan $5 for a bottle of water that you can buy for $2 at the grocery store became accepted. We took a look at the Masters – one of the most exclusive sporting events in the world, but also with some of the most affordable food and beverage. You can get a beer for $4, a pimento cheese sandwich for $1.50. We wanted something similar. We want fans to say, 'Somebody has gotten it right for the first time.'" (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
Colorado State hosted its first kick in the sparkling new on-campus FB stadium with a win over Oregon State on national TV. CSU Prez Frank noted the upgraded vibe with the new digs being right on campus, "[at Hughes Stadium where the Rams played previously] You just lacked that energy, for lack of a better term, that exists on a college campus." More than 37K were in attendance, many who were returning to a Rams FB game for the first time in quite some time. Rams AD Parker says standing room only tickets weren't sold as the objective was an outstanding game atmosphere, not an attendance record. Piece includes good video from pre-game. (link)
Tennessee worked with research firm Tripp Umbach back in 2015 to understand the economic impact of Vols athletics to the local economy & the data finally hits the public wire. The result: $355.7M in annual impact, 57.5% from FB alone. "That’s $42 million for the average home-game weekend, the report’s authors concluded. Unsurprisingly, the biggest chunk of that impact is on the hospitality industry: hotels see $73.9 million in annual effects from UT football, while restaurants and bars get $82.5 million, according to the study." More data included. (link)
Fresno State may have to hit pause on upgrades to Bulldog Stadium as cracks in the east side seating areas & walkways are causing concern & could push back completion timelines. AD Bartko: "It's the 100-pound gorilla." No word yet on the solution, though the scope could range from simple repairs to a whole rebuild. Bartko says the Bulldogs have generated $15M worth of private giving so far for the original project & are in the marketplace with naming rights opportunities, but figuring out the new scope is key, "...we have to determine is it just the west side, or do we need to do it over a two-year span?" (link)
Kansas AD Zenger says the time was right to honor former FB HC & longtime friend Mangino given the job he did in raising the profile of the Jayhawks all the way to an Orange Bowl victory back in 2008. Zenger: "I have a great staff. With coach Beaty and others, we were all in a dialogue about it for several years. I get to be in touch with coach Mangino multiple times throughout the year, so it wasn’t as personal on that level because we get to be in touch and remain friends. This just caps it." Mangino will be inducted into KU's Hall of Fame next month alongside former FB student-athlete & NFL standout Talib & the entire '07 squad. (link)
The News & Observer's Barnett recounts the Duke Men's LAX saga back in 2006 as the reason why NC State & Wake County officials should proceed carefully in the case involving five current or former Wolfpack FB student-athletes in connection to allegations of rape & sexual battery. Thesis: "N.C. State administrators and (Wake County DA) Freeman have done well to emphasize process over emotion or assumption. But caution also has its excesses. It doesn’t seem right that more than a month has passed since the three women alleged the assaults in reports filed with N.C. State University police a day after the party. A long delay raises doubts about the credibility of the allegations but also keeps the accused under the shadow of suspicion. Both sides deserve to know where they stand as soon as possible." More. (link)
Also Noticed: The 2023 and 2024 editions of the Rocky Mountain Showdown between Colorado and Colorado State might be played in Boulder and Fort Collins, respectively, as ADs Parker and George "have talked very, very seriously and really have a strong verbal commitment" to that effect. (link); Those new halftime rules are already being implemented as Florida A&M's band played too long at the break and the Rattlers incurred a 10-yard penalty to start the second half of their game against Texas Southern yesterday. (link); The Northwestern rower who in April was knocked from the boat and drowned had previously told his teammates that he didn't know how to swim. Swimming tests were not required to join the team. The Wildcats have since implemented a "safety exam" for its members. (link)
