Teams of English language arts and math educators and content experts met last week to set the score levels for the next-generation MCAS. More than 125 educators volunteered to serve on the standard-setting panels.
Dear District Leaders, Educators, and Community Stakeholders:

There will be a public celebration of former Commissioner Mitchell Chester’s life at 3 p.m. Monday, August 28, 2017 at Harvard University's Memorial Church. Individuals who would like to attend are asked to RSVP online. Dr. Chester was commissioner of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education from May 2008 until his untimely death from an illness in June 2017.
Remembering Commissioner Mitchell Chester.
ESE releases interactive parent guide to the next-generation MCAS

The Department’s new interactive MCAS guide provides helpful tips for parents on the following subjects:
  • how test results are used to support teaching and learning
  • the ways the next-generation MCAS test better measures the critical skills students need for success in the 21st century
  • the new scoring categories
  • how to seek support for their child
Next-generation MCAS standard-setting committees conclude week-long conference

Last week, ESE conducted a week-long standard-setting event for the next-generation MCAS tests in grades 3–8 English language arts and mathematics to identify appropriate cut scores for the tests’ four achievement levels. Panels of Massachusetts educators and other stakeholders debated where cut scores should be set with help from expert facilitators, and ESE is reviewing the panels’ recommendations.
