Spring Into Spring

Springtime is just around the corner and it is a great season for events and conferencing.  As the earth stirs back to life, so do we, and we start to get excited about spending more time outdoors and soaking up some much-craved Vitamin D.
Venues with alfresco dining, rooftops and balconies are in high demand.  Conferencing by the seaside seems ideal, but so too are conference venues surrounded by blossoming gardens and vineyards.  Treat your delegates to menus filled with local springtime produce as they sip a glass of sparkling something or other in the sunshine.
Get your delegates involved in some super springtime team building activities. Outdoor cooking classes, archery, hot air balloon flights, golf, a game of cricket, the possibilities are wide and varied.  A little bit of fun goes a long way in helping your delegates to feel positive about working together.
The national events calendar is brimming during Springtime. If you haven’t booked your event yet, you had better get onto it! Here are some fun events coming up around the country that you could tie in with your corporate events.

We would like to announce the winner of the "Interesting Job Titles" comp from our last issue! The lucky winner is Kim Logan from TressCox Lawyers.  Her winning Job Title is "Inspired First-Class Marketing & Events Executive"! We will be sending Kim a voucher for Dinner, Bed and Breakfast for two at The Flowerdale Estate.
In other news we have redesigned our office and are loving the new 'internet cafe' look as dubbed by our IT Support guru, Anton.  Stacey visited the central coast NSW as a guest of IHG hotels last month and was impressed by the Crowne Plaza Hotels in the amazing locations of Coogee Beach, Terrigal, Hunter Valley and Newcastle. We also attended the grand opening of the new Hyatt Place at Essendon Fields and were treated to many culinary delights as well as a live performance from Guy Sebastian. The conference centre is definitely worth checking out.  Katarina also managed to fit in a business trip visiting clients and venues in Sydney as well as a family holiday to Cambodia. Siem Reap is the perfect international destination for your next conference.  Contact us if you would like to know more about the venues we have recently visited!  If you would like to follow our adventures, find us on Instagram!
Time for a Spring Clean?
Winter is almost over! Is it time for an office spring clean? Studies have shown that a clean office can contribute to an increase in productivity.  An organised and uncluttered desk reflects an organised approach to work.  Clear the clutter away and start getting things done more efficiently.
It is important to set aside some time for tidying up your workspace.  Put 10 minutes aside between those important jobs and get yourself organised.  Start with your In Tray.  File away what needs to be filed and prioritise things that need to be actioned.  Clear your desk of clutter, let your desk breathe.  Make it a habit to have out on your desk only what you are working on at any given time.  Find a place for everything you need, and throw out what you don’t.

Book Review by Katarina Cobain

First They Killed My Father by Loung Ung

I bought this book from an old man with a big smile and no arms, carrying a box of books around his neck on the streets of Siem Reap in Cambodia.
Loung takes us first to her happy childhood and the everyday life of a middle class family in the country’s capital, Phnom Penh. She describes a typical childhood in a house shared with her three brothers and three sisters. Her happy life suddenly gets turned upside down in 1975. The city people are marched out of the city by gun wielding, Cambodian soldiers.   Loung’s family is forced to leave the city with thousands of others on a seemingly never ending march through the countryside.  She describes the journey of the family through the villages, from one incident to the next, with the stark presence of starvation and suffering as seen from the eyes of a five year old child. This little girl sees, feels, suffers and remembers every detail of the hard and horrible experience. She’s powered by the anger and her hunger for revenge. By the end of Khmer Rouge regime in 1979, she’s left with deep scars, some family members still alive whilst others have been lost forever.
The book is heavy and dark.  It will make you sad and teary at times.  The author makes makes no apologies for exposing the reader to the raw truth of her experience. She simply describes what happened, and how they survived. You will feel the strength and the raw emotions attached to the survival of war refugees.
