We Became Our Own...

Non-Profit Organization!!

We are beyond excited to announce to you all that we have become our own 501c3 with the help of a couple of really amazing people. As you read in our last newsletter, SDRT has taken on a life of its own! UrbanLife had been our fiscal sponsor for the last few years and we finally decided it was time to become our own independent organization. The SDRT Leadership Team has been diligently working on this process over the summer. We have formed a board, sought financial advice and have our own EIN number!! We are starting our NINTH year of tutoring as an official non-profit organization! Hooray!

Please Come to One Orientation: 9/19 or 9/21

Come hear more about us becoming our own non-profit and what that means as well as take note of the new procedures we will be implementing for this new year.  We would like to share this information with you all at a New & Old Tutor Orientation Night. WE NEED EVERYONE TO ATTEND ONE OF THESE. These will be held on Tuesday, September 19th and Thursday, September 21st from 5-6:30pm (please note time changed). You need to attend one, even if you have been to one in the past. Please sign up for one of these on our website now. Just click on the date on the calendar and RSVP with your name and email (this is a new format!). Plan to stay after and help us get ready for tutoring the following week!

**If you don't attend one in September, you cannot tutor until you attend one. The next ones will be Oct. 10 and 12. Please be sure to let your friends know this! Remember, we need 60 tutors per session--120 per week.

Saying Farewell To Jeremy!

Jon, Carol, Jeremy, Melissa and Rob

Jeremy Blough helped start San Diego Refugee Tutoring eight years ago. At the time, he and several other educators (Melissa Phillips was one) went to church together and dreamt of what it would be like to give recently arrived refugee students the academic support they desperately needed by pooling together those in the community. Jeremy brought his high school students all the way from Alpine, opening their eyes to new cultures and educational injustices. Jeremy has continued to forge many partnerships with other organizations and SDRT, has helped write grants and has been a visionary for this organization! Also, he has led tutoring consistently for the past eight years! In this time, his daughters have grown up before our eyes and he and his wife have fostered and adopted two more little boys! Their family of six moved to the San Bernadino mountains this summer for a large cabin home, lots of acreage (and some serenity!), and a new job. Jeremy will still work toward educational justice with his new set of students who have had issues with the law. We are excited for him and this new opportunity for his career and his family. However, this leaves a big hole at SDRT and we all will miss him greatly.

Did you know that Jeremy's parents, Steve and Jennifer, are some of our most faithful, longstanding tutors?

Steve and Farahan, Jennifer and Wah Ler Paw
Tutoring starts Sept. 26th & 28th!

We will kick off our new school year on Tuesday, Sept. 26th and Thursday, Sept. 28th from 5-6:30pm so mark your calendars. The kids are chomping at the bit, wondering when you all will arrive!! See our website for our new registration process for this school year.

New Way to GIVE!

Our incredible volunteer WebMaster, Matt Cromwell, who has also been donating his time and talent to our organization for EIGHT YEARS has created a new webpage that we can accept donations from. Please check it out! And, he has actually put in an enormous amount of time on behalf of SDRT this summer, so thank you Matt!

Beach and Bay Day

Thanks to Out of the Boat Swim and Junior Lifeguards for such a successful trip with 60 of our kids! Highlights included watching Abejedo and her regular tutor, Becki, kayak together, Obangora showing up in a wetsuit, Rami learning to surf and Ahmed wearing sunglasses and a straw hat out in the waves!

Back2School Bash

With 99 kids and 62 volunteers, we overtook St. Mark's when we arrived this year! We are so thankful for the food, backpacks, socks, shoes, haircuts, and games they provided. And, we are hopeful that many of our new volunteers will come back to tutor this month!

Thank You to The One Love Movement!

Kim Bauman and the Board at The One Love Movement chose SDRT to one of the beneficiaries of their 6th Annual Charity Yoga Event held two weeks ago! They raised us $5,500, which will be used for our ice skating trip in January, new technology and an emergency fund for medical, food, clothing and housing needs for our students. Thank you so much, Kim and team!
