Read - My Journey To Chattanooga - Mark Wharton
A  busy day on the AD movement wire started with UT Chattanooga Chancellor Angle naming Penn State Assoc. AD for Development Wharton as the Mocs new leader. Angle: "I am extremely excited that Mark and his family are joining the Chattanooga community. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experiences in collegiate athletics administration to our University, and his expertise in fund-raising fits perfectly with the needs of our athletics program." Introduction presser set for today at 2p. (link); Wharton contributed to AthleticDirectorU in conjunction with the announcement. In closing, "We will move daringly, yet competently, into the unknown, equipped with the understanding that our community fully expects us to carry the flag of our city to the rest of the nation. We will become One Chattanooga. We must do it together, we have no choice." (link)
Pacific AD Leland announces plans to retire in late October, after sitting atop the Tigers org chart since mid-2011. Leland: "At my age, after all these years, it’s just time for somebody younger. I think they can get somebody in here that’s got a little bit more energy and can get this thing going. […] That’s going to take a lot of work [renovations to the Spanos Center] and it’s going to take someone who has a 5-, 10-, 15-year horizon. I don’t have that. So for us to initiate a bunch of new programs under my tutelage that I’m not going to see through to the end doesn’t make any sense to me. I want to enjoy retirement while I’m still healthy enough to do it." (link)
East Tennessee State AD Sander will remain at the university, but slide into a new role next month with Senior Assoc. AD/COO Carter taking over the Bucs department. Prez Noland: "During his time at ETSU, Scott Carter has provided critical leadership in guiding the return of football to campus as well as sustaining and building our other athletics programs. I have no doubt he will continue to raise the bar for ETSU athletics as he assumes this new role." Carter says he's "blessed" & "humbled" to take the reigns of his alma mater. (link)
NCAA Prez Emmert Q&A-ed with the Indy Star on a variety of issues facing the collegiate sports landscape. Credits Chief Medical Officer Hainline for his efforts in conjunction with the trainers association to ensure proper certification of those hired into such positions on campus. Says the schools must be diligent in following the new concussion protocols as the NCAA cannot be on campuses to regulate in person. On the new sexual violence policy: "I think they’re [the 8 U.S. Senators who wrote to the NCAA] asking a lot of good and important questions, particularly questions that have to be answered in conjunction with the rest of higher education. This isn’t an athletic issue; it’s a higher ed issue. It’s not even a higher ed issue, it’s a societal issue, but we want to and what the committee (commissioned to combat campus sexual violence) is going to do is work with higher education leaders so that athletics can be a leader in trying to drive some change around those kinds of questions. The issues of admission and eligibility and who should be on campuses is obviously an enormously complex one, but it’s one we need to get our arms around." On the nature of schools fighting enforcement: "I think it’s the nature of a lot of those kinds of processes. Not just in sports or higher education, just nationally there’s a tendency everywhere for people to lawyer up, to get representation, to press their positions and press any process to try and work effectively for them." Thinks the CFP is "terrific" for FB. More. (link)
Georgia Tech AD Stansbury on the Yellow Jackets' new deal with Adidas, "This was at the top of the list and it is one of the things I said along the way, the refinement and elevation of the Georgia Tech brand is one of my top priorities. Having an apparel partner is a significant piece of that. […] Part of the process in finding a partner was finding someone that would make it a priority and provide the bandwidth to make sure we refined the brand and elevated the brand and would work jointly to make sure when you see the GT it is the one color of gold. That we will name Tech gold, you knew exactly who you were watching and what they stand for." Three Stripes Director of NCAA Marketing Murphy calls the pact a "fully integrated partnership." (link)
Intersport announces plans for a 3-on-3 tournament at the 2018 MBB Final Four in San Antonio that will pit teams against one another in a three-day event consisting of student-athletes who will have recently exhausted their eligibility. Grand prize: $100K. Interestingly, Intersport communications manager Flaherty says the producers are "pretty confident" the competition falls within NCAA rules. One team per conference, though no word on exactly how many leagues will be selected. The NCAA's statement, in part, "As with their 3-point shooting contest and dunk contest, this event is not associated with the NCAA or the Final Four." (link)
Former SEC Commish & notable sports industry leader Schiller is now an equity stakeholder in College Sports Management Group & will lead the charge for an initial round of funding. Schiller: "I'm really in love with the college world and see this as a unique opportunity. It's an opportunity to build something special."  No exacts provided on the amount of Schiller's investment or equity position. (link)
LSU will have earned $23.75M from seven neutral site FB games once the Tigers kick with Miami (FL) during the 2018 season in Arlington & Deputy AD Ausberry says "it's all about recruiting," with Texas as a key. Here's an even more compelling financial reason, "That average is about $3.4 million per game, more than LSU makes in revenue from a home game, school officials have said." Ausberry also notes interest in such a match-up in New Orleans, though The Advocate's Dellenger notes the potentially negative impact on the Tigers non-conference home slate in Baton Rouge. (link)
ESPN's Bonagura reports former Ole Miss FB HC Freeze made calls to numbers related to escort services at least 12 times since April of 2014 from his university-issued phone. Via a FOIA, the Worldwide Leader received 39,000 calls dialed by Freeze starting in December of 2011, all those that were personal in nature were redacted, which added up to roughly 20% of the total volume. (link)
The Deseret News' Robinson calls the increase in media limitations around the nation for FB summer camps, "actually understandable." Utah Senior Assoc. AD for Communications Abel hits the nail on the head, "We have no way to establish who is a ‘trained’ journalist, and a past court ruling on the topic doesn’t allow us to tell someone they aren’t a ‘real’ media outlet."  (link)

Stanford FB HC Shaw got up close & personal with a kangaroo not long after landing in Australia for the Cardinal's matchup in Sydney this weekend against Rice. The entire traveling party went straight to the Taronga Park Zoo upon landing & Shaw says meeting the roo was second on his list of must-dos. First: Seeing the famous Sydney Opera House. Shaw's squad also hit beautiful Bondi Beach. (link)

ESPN.com's latest interactive is a Fan Happiness Index for all 128 FBS programs. Methodology incorporates program power, rivalry dominance, coaching stability, recruiting trend, revenue growth, and Twitter buzz. Ohio State, Florida State, Alabama, Louisville, and Kansas State hold down the top five spots. Bottom 5: Texas State, Idaho, UConn, Rice & Kent State. Each program has broken down category ratings. (link)
Yahoo's Thamel takes a look at which FBS & FCS FB HCs are next in line to ascend to a bigger job, tops the list of 16 with former Oregon HC Kelly, followed by Tulsa's Montgomery, Appalachian State's Satterfield, Toledo's Candle, Memphis' Norvell & Boise State HC Harsin. From the FCS ranks, Thamel goes with North Dakota State boss Klieman, Youngstown State's Pelini, James Madison's Houston, Fordham HC Breiner & UT Chattanooga's Arth, even though the new UTC HC hasn't even coached a game yet for the Mocs. (link)
Heading into FB HC Kingsbury's fifth season, Texas Tech AD Hocutt addresses the state of the program under Lubbock's favorite son and how he has seen the still-not-yet-40-year-old evolve. Provides plenty of platitudes for the first-time HC's character and integrity and explains how Kingsbury opting to spend more time at practice around the defense will help boost energy for the entire roster, but ultimately notes: "We're judged by the success we have at Jones AT&T Stadium, and that's the reality of college athletics these days." (link)
Pac-12 Hotline's Wilner starts a multi-part look at the Pac-12 Networks with a piece on what's gone right over the years, "Remember: The Pac-12 Networks were not pitched to the presidents/chancellors, and billed to the public, as an entity designed exclusively to generate maximum cash flow and exposure for football/men’s basketball." Commish Scott reiterates that given its initial aims, the Networks have hit the mark. Another key theme echoed by those inside & outside the league is the high level of production value for games & studio shows alike. (link)
While he may not be on the sideline anymore, former Baylor FB HC Briles is being solicited for input on running an up-tempo offense by Florida Atlantic HC Kiffin and Briles' son, an FAU AC. Kiffin: "Obviously, he's done unbelievable things on offense. It's his system that he started years and years ago. Every once in a while, I'll text or call him and bounce something off of him." The younger Briles: "Obviously, he has ideas. He wants to know personnel and different guys and making sure we're getting those guys in the right spots and getting them touches and all that stuff. He's a football coach—that's all he's ever been. He's definitely involved, and we talk daily." (link)

MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
Entering its second year without a conference, UMass AD Bamford is comfortable with FB's position, noting its independent status is "sustainable for as long as we want to be an independent." While Bamford was keeping an eye on Big 12 expansion, he continues to focus on building the program, which in turn will help UMass get into a conference. Part of its financial stability includes playing two P5 opponents a year, which includes a record $1.9M pay day from Auburn in 2020: “That’s the financial reality that allows us to sustain where we are and where we’re going in a way that we wouldn’t be able to do if we stayed (as a lower-tier program).” (link)
SI's Staples jumps in on how Big 12 FB can catch up to its 'Power 5' peers with a simple solution: "Simply put, the Big 12 needs better football players—and it needs them now." With only two Top 10 recruiting classes in the last five years (Oklahoma and Texas) and the fewest and lowest drafted student-athletes in the P5, Staples contends the lack of a conference championship game or Texas' recent woes are not the cause, as Texas FB HC Herman agrees: "I think that was a little bit different than what had been done in the past in Texas. Especially when Texas is down, other schools smell blood in the water a little bit." Staples's closing argument: "It needs to happen, and soon. Otherwise, the Big 12 might just score itself into oblivion." (link)
ESPN's Lavinge & Schlabach officially released their new book, Violated, about the situation at Baylor. Lavigne says she sent a list of questions to former FB HC Briles to answer, but the university shut that down. (link); Another sexual assault lawsuit has been filed against Baylor & the defendant's attorney says the way his client was treated in follow-up to the incident is "an example of how things still have not changed." (link)
Southern Miss AD Gilbert unveiled plans to relocate its Bower Academic Center to inside USM's Cook Library, with a 12- to15-month timeline. A previous plan to renovate the current center was estimated to run $2M. Gilbert: "In the process of planning for the renovation, we have come to learn that renovation of the current space would be filled with significant infrastructure concerns that would create excessive costs in renovation. As such, we began the search for a new and more sensible home for the Center." (link); USM also announced a home-and-home FB series with Liberty. Lynchburg in 2020, Hattiesburg in 2022. Interestingly, the Golden Eagles will receive $500K for the away kick, won't have to spend a penny for the Flames' visit. (link)
ESPN has pulled the Virginia-William & Mary broadcast assignment from sportscaster Robert Lee because his name bears too much resemblance to Robert E. Lee, the Confederate General at the center of the Charlottesville rally nearly two weeks ago. Statement from the World Wide Leader: "We collectively made the decision with Robert to switch games as the tragic events in Charlottesville were unfolding, simply because of the coincidence of his name. It's a shame that this is even a topic of conversation and we regret that who calls play by play for a football game has become an issue." (link)
Also Noticed: Deepest condolences to the Ball State family as redshirt freshman MBB student-athlete Hollywood passed away yesterday. (link); NC State dismissed two FB players and suspended three more amid an investigation into an alleged sexual assault at a party last month in Raleigh. (link); Kansas dismissed a FB student-athlete after he allegedly threatened a woman with a gun over the weekend. (link); The city of Stillwater hopes to have a new ordinance that regulates short-term rentals by requiring lodging tax collections in place by Oct. 1, could impact those who rent out their homes for Oklahoma State FB games via Airbnb, HomeAway or Rent Like a Champion. (link); The Citadel is adding a 500-person beer garden for the upcoming FB season. (link); Rhode Island WBB passes on its foreign trip to Barcelona & Lisbon that was supposed to start this Friday. (link); The search for Iowa State's new president continues, as those on the search committee "seek balance between transparency and confidentiality" in the process they hope to have wrapped up "before Halloween." (link)
