Energypedia Team Went  Hiking

Battling against rainy and windy weather, the energypedia team hiked in the Rheingau region and also visited the nearby Eberbach monastery, beginning of August. It was a wonderful experience to bring the team together and build our team spirit. Now we are filled with new energy to tackle new challenges!

Greenlight Symposium – Energypedia Joins as Media Partner

Inspired by new digital technologies in the energy field, Hochschule Offenburg together with Madame Ilsa Foundation is organizing the Greenlight - Symposium to promote ‘’Energiewende’’ in Morocco. This symposium will present the Greenlight for Morocco student initiative, which focuses on sustainability and the principle of helping people to help themselves. The event will offer a networking platform for enterprises, research institutes and politicians. It is organized under the auspices of the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy and is supported by the local government of Baden-Württemberg and the Moroccan embassy in Germany.
Energypedia is the official media partner for this symposium, which will take place on November 23 at Hochschule Offenburg in Germany.

Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) Launches Updated Heat Maps

SE4All has updated four sets of heat maps on clean cooking, electricity access, energy efficiency and renewable energy on its website. Each heat map includes 20 “high-impact” countries that are facing the biggest challenges on specific sustainable energy indicators. Most of the data for the heat maps have been derived from the 2017 Global Tracking Framework report and the Regulatory Indicators for Sustainable Energy.

World Bank Provides USD 150 Million for Off-grid Solar in Kenya

These funds will be used to bring electricity to around 1.3 million people in 277,000 households across 14 counties in Northeastern Kenya. The project, which includes collaboration between the public and private sectors, embedded operation and maintenance, as well as financing of the solar home system component, will provide households, businesses and community facilities with off-grid and micro grid PV solutions.

USD 150 Million Loan to Improve the Power Distribution in Nepal

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a USD 150 million loan to improve the reliability and efficiency of Nepal’s electricity supply and distribution through the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA). The project will work towards reducing distribution system overloads and the technical and commercial losses in the existing transmission and distribution network in the project area.

Global Solar Atlas is now Available  for all Countries

To support the scale-up of solar power, the World Bank in cooperation with the International Solar Alliance (ISA)  has provided a Global Solar Atlas tool covering all countries.
The primary aim of this tool is to provide quick and easy access to solar resource data globally. The tool includes high resolution global and regional solar maps in digital format for use in Geographic Information System (GIS) applications and Google Earth.

‘’Moving Energy Initiative’’ Starts Clean Energy Projects for Refugees

To provide greater access to affordable, clean energy for domestic use and to power ‘micro businesses", the Moving Energy Initiative has launched a new grant scheme for refugees in Burkina Faso, Kenya and Jordan. Under this scheme, four projects will be implemented over the next 12 months, with all involving training for refugees and local staff to use and maintain the clean energy technologies.

USD 200 Million Loan for Energy - Efficient Lights in India 

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of India have signed a USD 200 million loan to finance installation of energy-efficient lights in streets and homes as well as energy-efficient water pumps across India. This project is expected to yield 30% energy savings from agricultural water pumps and about 80% from households and institutions LED lighting and about 50% saving from LED streetlights.

It also presents cookstove technologies that efficiently transfer the energy contained in solid biomass fuels to pots and pans. A selection of projects illustrates marketing approaches and practical implications.

State of Electricity Access Report 2017

The report examines the critical role of energy toward the achievement of the SDGs and provides a snapshot of the status of electricity access, based on the recent Global Tracking Framework Data. It also explores how countries can create a conducive environment for a transformative electricity access roll out, how clean energy fits into the picture, and how emerging and innovative service delivery models can accelerate progress on meeting the goals. The report has been published by the World Bank / ESMAP.

Tuned In: Television and Civic Engagement in Off-grid Society

Released by M-KOPA, this report looks into the role of solar television in the off-grid economy. The report includes findings from a survey conducted among 250 customers of M-Kopa in Kenya, who have acquired a solar television for the first time. According to the report, 90% of the solar television owners feel that they are more politically aware since getting the television. The customers mention news/educational programs as main reason for buying a solar television followed by entertainment programs.

An Evidence Review: How Affordable is Off-grid Energy Access in Africa?

According to this report, poor households tend to spend more money for energy access as compared to wealthier households. However, the consumers are price sensitive and want financing options to make the energy products accessible but are not always financially literate. Although access to solar is increasing rapidly it is highly concentrated in a few countries. This report has been released by ACUMEN.
