The One Family team has been settling into our new offices in Smithfield Square, Dublin 7 and we have been happy to welcome clients to the building in recent weeks. We moved in July, after over 40 years in our first premises, Cherish House in Dublin 2. We also celebrate our 45th anniversary this year.

We have very fond memories of Cherish House, captured in our new podcast which features our founding member, Maura O'Dea Richards and current staff. They recall meetings by candlelight, mothers and their children living in the building, and more. Listen to it here (7.5 minutes). Maura, along with our CEO Karen Kiernan, also spoke with Ray D'Arcy on RTÉ Radio 1 about our 45 year history, what life was really like for women who were parenting and unmarried in Ireland in the 1970s, and what lone parents experience today. September means back to school; a busy and expensive time for parents. But this is also a great time to think about our own training needs. One Family offers a number programmes for parents, and for professionals who work with families. Recruitment is open for our free New Futures and Options courses for parents who would like to get back to education and/or employment; and our Autumn season of Professional Development courses is also open for booking.

One Family is a member of Better Outcomes: Brighter Futures, working to make child poverty eradication a priority for the Government. Our Policy & Programmes Manager, Valerie Maher, updates on this and other recent policy work.

Parents' Programmes

If you are parenting alone or sharing parenting and would like to get back to education and/or work but aren't sure where to start, One Family has two upcoming programmes that may fit your needs. Our free New Futures and Options programmes offer accreditation recognised on the National Framework of Qualifications.

New Futures, starting in October 2017, is a free 24 week, part-time personal and professional development programme specifically designed for those parenting alone or sharing parenting, and is accredited at QQI Level 4. New Futures is part supported by the Irish Government and the European Social Fund as part of the ESF Programme for Employability, Inclusion and Learning (PEIL) 2014-2020.

Options, a full academic year program beginning in September 2017, is a free, part-time introductory programme specifically designed for those parenting alone or sharing parenting, and is run in partnership with Ballsbridge College of Further Education. It provides practical skills for progression into employment, self employment, and/or college.

New Futures and Options are part supported by the Irish Government and the European Social Fund as part of the ESF Programme for Employability, Inclusion and Learning (PEIL) 2014-2020.

Professionals' Programmes

If you work with parents and/or children; are a family support worker, social worker, youth worker, family therapist, educator, drugs project worker or counsellor, or deliver parenting/family support courses, One Family's programmes can help you to build on your skills, knowledge and approach.

Our next course, Positive Parenting for Changing Families, is a 3 day programme that starts on 11 September. This course gives professionals tools they need to support parents to build strong relationships with their children and manage difficult behavior. For further information and to book click here.

Also coming up is the Workshop: Supporting Families in Conflict-Reducing Communication. This workshop  will  explore building skills to support parents in practising clear and direct communication in relation to common family dilemmas, identifying communication styles and understanding the connection between choices of behaviour and needs.
