Garbage/Recycle Overflow
For The Week of Labor Day
A reminder that there is free overflow for garbage and recycle collection the week of Labor Day. Residents may place bagged garbage that does not fit in the container alongside the container free of charge. Overflow recycle should be placed in a paper bag or cardboard box alongside of the recycle container to facilitate pick up. Please do not place recycling materials in a plastic bag.

Just a reminder that the 2017 Fall Rubbish, Large Bulky & Metal Items Pick Up will be the week of Labor Day starting on September 5, 2017 to Friday, September 8, 2017. Please have your rubbish and large items curbside no later than 6:30 a.m. on your scheduled garbage day to guarantee pick up. Any items placed out after 6:30 a.m. on your garbage day will be the owner’s responsibility. Garbage collection is delayed one day due to the Labor Day holiday.

Annual Be the Light Walk
Looks to Unite Community
Be the Light Walk will take place on Saturday, September 16th, 2017 from 6:00 to 9:30 PM. This family-friendly event lights up the night to reduce stigma and prevent suicide. Dr. Thomas Joiner, Ph.D., is this year’s keynote speaker. He grew up in Georgia, went to college at Princeton, and received his PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin. He is a Distinguished Research Professor and The Bright-Burton Professor in the Department of Psychology at Florida State University. Dr. Joiner’s work is on the psychology, neurobiology, and treatment of suicidal behavior and related conditions. Learn more about organizations and agencies around Northeast Wisconsin who are actively working toward this goal in prevention, intervention and postvention at our Resource Fair. The night will conclude with a picturesque 1-mile candlelight walk through Downtown Green Bay.
Each year, over 800 Wisconsin residents die by suicide. For every death by suicide, 6 people are affected. In 2016, nearly 50 died by suicide in Brown County. Communities from Brown County are looking to break the stigma surrounding depression and suicide as well as address the reality of suicide. Over 25,700 community members have been trained in the QPR suicide prevention model since 2008. In 2017 there has been 5,026 trained in QPR, in which 4,245 of them were youth trained in SOS.
Be the Light Walk is an annual fundraising and awareness event of the Brown County Coalition for Suicide Prevention. The Coalition is committed to promoting awareness that suicide is a public health problem that is preventable by providing education to decrease the stigma associated with mental health and suicide. The group engages in prevention strategies to reduce suicide in Brown County through grass roots efforts, including outreach, education and gatekeeper training utilizing the Question, Persuade and Refer (QPR) program and Signs of Suicide (SOS) trainings for youth.
The De Pere Health Department serves as a member on the Brown County Suicide Coalition and is also on the planning committee for the Be the Light Walk. Join us for this family friendly event!
