In light of the Administration's decision to rescind Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), DCAYA reaffirms our commitment to the 800 DREAMers who call-- and have only ever called-- the District their home.  We are ready, as always, to ensure that the commitments made to our youth through policy, including DACA, are implemented with fidelity, transparency and accountability. We stand alongside DACA youth, their families, and their communities to fight against and minimize the harmful impacts of this decision." - Your DCAYA Team

Welcome Back!

As our youth get back to school, we are getting back to work! In reality we never stopped. Budget Advocacy Season may have been several months ago, but the wins we achieved don't really hit the proverbial pavement until the District's FY2018 budget starts in October.

We are ready, as always, to ensure that the commitments and investments made to keep our youth on track are implemented with integrety, transparency and accountaibility. We hope you had a wonderful summer, and a safe and enjoyable Labor Day weekend. And here are some news, opportunities, and upcoming events that we thought would be of interest to you.

FutureEd Report, "Vouchers in D.C.: Why Families Aren't Choosing Vouchers"

August 23, 2017

While applications for the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program were up in the 2016-2017 school year, the number of students who actually used vouchers fell to 1,154, down from 1,638 four years earlier. A third of the students already awarded vouchers didn’t use them. And more than half of the new students who won vouchers in the 2016 lottery didn’t end up going to private school. With the new legislation and an infusion of cash, advocates expect to see numbers rise in the new school year.

Why did D.C. voucher use decline when voucher programs elsewhere were expanding rapidly? The answer reflects both the flaws in the program’s design and the wide array of educational choices the city offers. And it provides insights into how to design school choice systems that best serve students and taxpayers effectively.
